We are currently staying in the Monchsberg Apartment, built into the side of the rock escarpment, right in the heart of Salzburg.

  • Cable car Untersberg

    May 30, 2018 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Side trip to Untersberg to take the cable car up the mountain- the lift rises an impressive 1,320 m in elevation. We saw our first patches of snow today - dirty and icy but snow all the same !

  • Heiligenblut

    June 1, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

So, tomorrow the real adventure begins as we set off on the first day of our 22 day hike along the Alpe Adria Trail - feeling very excited and a bit nervous too.

  • Heiligenblut

    June 1, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Today we took the train and taxi bus from Salzburg to the alpine village of Heiligenblut which is at the base of the Grossglockner Mountain. We have the perfect combination of blue skies, sunshine and snow on the alps .....picture perfect.Read more

  • Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hohe to Heiligenblut

    June 2, 2018 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

    12.5 km/173m ascent/1,267m descent
Day one was everything I hoped for, plus more........more rocky tracks, more icy river crossings, more slippery ice slopes, more cow poo covered, icy slippery rocky slopes .... the challenges just kept coming but we did it and it was incredible.Read more

  • Dollach to Martele

    June 4, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

    17.9km/1,161m ascent/338m descent
Today we hiked along a path following the flat and fast flowing Moell River and then we crossed the river to hike up a steep mountain path to the highest pilgrimage church in Austria at Martele. We are staying in a picturesque wooden mountain hut with breathtaking views of the snow covered alps and the Dolomites - and we are the only guests here tonight.Read more

  • Dollach to Martele

    June 4, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

These are photos of our Mountain Hut accommodation at 1861 metres. When we arrived the sun was shining and the skies were clear and then 15 minutes later we watched a wild thunder storm pass across the next mountain range - it sounded like the mountain Gods were raging but we were warm, safe and dry.Read more

  • Martele to Stall

    June 5, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

    10.8km /72m ascent/1051m descent
We were very reluctant to leave beautiful Martele this morning but we said our goodbyes to Erika, who had looked after us so well, and walked back down the mountain with mostly blue skies again. I was delighted to find a swimming pool in the small village of Stall and we took the plunge into the fairly icy waters, with the snow capped mountains above us - perfect for soothing aching muscles (or at least numbing everything!)Read more

  • Stall to Innerfragant

    June 6, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

    22km/1185m ascent/ 967m descent
A day of contrasts today - 5 hours of sunshine and steady uphill walking, a lovely lunch break at Goldberghutte mountain hut (memorable homemade cheese and speck) then 5 hours of steep descent in some pouring rain through earlier avalanche areas of mud, ice and snow.Read more

  • Flattach to Mallnitz

    June 7, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌫 14 °C

    15.1km/1103m ascent/632m descent
Another day with the ‘Difficult’ rating but we all managed very well. We did not have the fallen trees, avalanche areas and tricky river crossings to negotiate today, just a big climb in the morning and light rain in the afternoon with another spectacular lunch stop.Read more

  • Mallnitz to Obervellach

    June 8, 2018 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    17.7 km/230m ascent/730m descent/6.5 hours
Today was a spectacular day as promised, with a walk out to a mountain lake (Stappitzer See) and then continuing on through 2 river gorges. This path was described as ‘audacious’ which we now understand means ‘hanging off a cliff face over raging torrents and waterfalls’!Read more

  • Obervellach to Danielsberg

    June 9, 2018 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    12.9km/908m ascent/637 descent/5.5 hours
Today’s walking was listed as ‘easy’ but we all felt the humidity and felt like we could not get out of 1st gear. I was apologising for ‘faffing about’ and then I looked up and noticed the street sign - we were actually in Pfaffenberg! Rudi and I were picked up and taken back to the Herkuleshof Inn for dinner where we were treated to a truly memorable meal of local Camembert, escargot and local venison. The owner (who lived in Sydney for a few years and had an Australian partner) then took us for ‘an adventure at the bar’ trying all sorts of local drinks and all on the house. They were also hosting a wedding and on dark, they lit the ‘fire garden’ which was a spectacular sight. We were finally dropped back to our accommodation at midnight feeling quite merry.Read more
