Italian solo adventure

A trip to Italy to celebrate my retirement (20+ years of teaching and 16 years of library), to challenge myself with some solo travel and return to my lifelong project of developing my Italian language skills. Leia mais
  • Camminare e mangiare

    15 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

A lovely morning walk around the harbour and out along the breakwater where there are 40 historical scenes depicted in ceramic tile murals.
Verena and I had our first meal out together, for lunch at Ristorante Il Moletto - a lovely place right on the waterfront, almost like a boathouse.Leia mais

  • Over the mountain to Campese Beach

    19 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Today I took the very scenic bus trip up one side of the mountain and down the other, to the village of Campese - this consisted of over 30 hairpin bends and the views of Giglio and beyond were incredible.
I spent the afternoon swimming at the red sand beach which I had pretty much to myself (other than a lifeguard) and relaxing on the deck of the beach bar.
I loved the ferry trip back to Porto SS again (it feels like a scenic cruise) and arrived back at the apartment for another fabulous sunset.

  • Cinderella story

    20 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

In the morning, I took a walk down to the old port and, with the binoculars, watched the regatta race for the Argentario Sailing Week.
In the evening, it had been arranged for us to arrive at the Spanish Fortress where we would be 'smuggled in' to the very fancy dinner for crew members.....unfortunately things did not go to plan (a security guy at the door/moat being one of the obstacles) so although we had arrived as hopeful Cinderellas, we schlepped home as rejected ugly stepsisters 🤣
All in all it was a very funny series of events!

  • Lots of action down at the old port

    22 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today was the final day of the Argentario Sailing Week and it was lovely to see all the boats dropping their sails and coming in to dock and then all the crews gathering for the presentations.

  • Another slow day

    23 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

A slow walk down to Punta Nera for swimming and relaxing under the shade of a tree.
In the evening, I returned to the old port and the dock was pretty quiet with only a couple of the older boats remaining, one of which was El Ora owned by an Australian man. He was below deck cooking dinner for his crew but I had a quick chat to one of the NZ crew members about this beautiful boat.Leia mais

  • Facciamo la festa - Let's have a party

    24 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Elena, a lovely friend I've made here, had a small party on the beach with her family and friends and it was the most wonderful night of swimming, chatting, laughing and yoga as the sun went down (I've done this balance yoga once before in Bali and was so happy to do this again) ...what a special experience!Leia mais

  • Mangia Mangia

    26 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

A fabulous sea fog this morning followed by a quick trip to Orbetello for some gift shopping and lunch at the lovely Bar Centrale.
I returned to my favourite quiet cove (Punta Nera) for a swim and spent time chatting to a few people.
Out to dinner at Dai Frati for a fabulous meal of typical Maremma style food - so good, in fact, I will return tomorrow night.

  • Another delicious meal at Dai Frati

    27 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A bit of a crazy morning with a second power outage. Verena was due to leave in the morning for her drive back to Austria but unfortunately some of her clothing was out on the balcony. The metal shutters were stuck down and there was no access to the balcony. Eventually, I managed to locate the problem, power was restored and Verena was able to get going.
I had the day to relax in the apartment and then returned to Dai Frati for a dinner of pasta with cinghiale, porcini and juniper berries - deliziosa.
After dinner, I sat on the balcony of the apartment and took in the spectacular sunset.

  • Giro in tonda - going around in circles

    28 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I decided to catch the free bus to Porto Ercole this morning but it was a "no-show" (no wonder it's free🤣) and Elena suggested i take the free shuttle bus into the Open Italia Golf at a nearby resort then back out to my destination town. To cut a long story short, I got stuck there but thankfully I was well looked after by the guys at the gate and was treated to a chair in the shade and cold water!
Eventually arrived at Porto Ercole but it was scorching hot so I retreated into the lovely Medusa Bar for their delicious craft gin and delicious Avocado on toast.

  • Cinderella's Ball - take 2

    28 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Tonight I had another chance to attend a party at the Fortezza Spagnola, after the previous failed attempt for Argentario Sailing Week.
It was an extremely hot night and the outdoor party came with some cooler breeze and stunning views as the sun went down.
It was a beautiful group of people, including the friends of Elena and Claudia and we spent 6 hours talking, laughing, partying and enjoying the very special atmosphere.
It was an incredible last night in Porto Santo Stefano and I made it to bed at 3am.

  • Back to my island paradise😍

    29 de junho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

After just a few hours sleep, I had to do my last few packing jobs and check out of the Airbnb, after the 4 week stay - there's always a bit more to do than you think!
As I was carefully walking down the steep road with all my luggage, a car stopped and it was my Airbnb Host, Rosa. Rosa lives a few hours drive away so I had not met her in my 4 week stay, so it was just lovely to meet in person. Her husband kindly drove me and my luggage down the hill, which was an added bonus.
It was another beautiful ferry trip back to Giglio but when I arrived the water was a bit rough, the sun was brutal and there was a strong hot wind.....the perfect excuse to take shelter in my lovely cool room and take a nap.

  • Solo Saraceno-no need to go elsewhere😍

    1 de julho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

There's was only one thing that could improve the incredible Hotel Saraceno experience and that was the company of these 2 beautiful souls....Elena and Claudia ❤️❤️
I invited them to join me, as my guests, for my last night on Giglio.
They had some tricky logistics to work through, organizing their children and work commitments but they made it happen and we had the most lovely last 24hrs together.
We started with Gin Giglio on our balcony (with the million dollar view) and then spent the rest of the afternoon swimming off the rocks below the hotel like 3 Saraceno mermaids🧜‍♀️ 🧜‍♀️ 🧜‍♀️
In the evening, it was blackberry mojitos at a bar watching the sun go down, a lovely shared dinner on the terrace of La Vecchia Pergola (trying some local specialties)
and continuing with storytelling, language sharing and of course plenty of laughter until we collapsed into bed at 3am (again 😅) - really the most perfect day🙏

  • Arrivederci a presto

    2 de julho de 2025, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After only a few hours sleep, we enjoyed the breakfast at the hotel and more swimming off the rocks below.
I can not believe that the 'travel gods' brought me to Italy, to Tuscany, to Monte Argentario, to Porto Santo Stefano, to the Info Centre (on my first day) to meet the gorgeous Elena and then Claudia. They have welcomed me as a friend and shared their time, family and friends with such generosity - so much more than the average tourist experience and so many special memories to take home with me ❤️
We caught the ferry back to Porto Santo Stefano (no goodbyes, only see you soon) and then I had 3 buses to catch back to Fiumicino city where I spent the night.

  • From Giglio to Porto SS to Fiumicino

    2 de julho de 2025, Itália ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

As mentioned in my previous post, the 3 of us had a slow breakfast at Hotel Saraceno and enjoyed some more 'zaccandrella' .....happy snack time and revelry, with friends outdoors!
We managed to squeeze in one last swim off the rocks, below the hotel, and I would say this is now my number one favourite swimming location in the world.
Elena and Claudia gave me the most beautiful gift of a stirling silver bracelet with the Monte Argentario symbol/map incorporated (this was from my favourite boutique in Porto Santo Stefano) - such a treasure to keep as a reminder of my lovely friends and experiences, in this magical part of the world. 💚🤍❤️

  • Home Sweet Home

    5 de julho de 2025, Austrália ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Rudi gave me a lovely welcome home with delicious cheese and champagne to enjoy.
I was lucky enough not to feel at all jetlagged. In fact, on Saturday, we partied at a friend's house until after midnight and were the last to leave!
On Sunday, the sun was shining, so we took Mia for a walk along the coast between Brighton and Seacliff.
