After a 36 hour journey we finally arrived at our first destination Munich
Checked in to our hotel for a quick shower and change of clothing and headed straight back out to explore

Soaking up the sunshine in Munich

旅行者All I got to see in Munchen was the inside of a beer hall, a Maccas and the train station - our wedding date was geared around TC being able to get back to the Oktoberfest to relive his youth 🤦‍♀️

In the evening, we swapped out pork knuckle and beer for Aperol Spritz and pasta in a little Italian Bar, in the back streets of Munich. It was such a great little find and we returned for a breakfast of pistachio croissant and Prosecco.もっと詳しく

Salzburg to Heiligenblut

This morning we met up again with our dear friend Verena and loaded our gear into her camper (Paulina) ready for our road trip to the small village of Heiligenblut, at the base of the Grossglockner (Austria's tallest mountain).
This journey took us through picturesque Austrian scenery and we took a small detour to Zell am See - a stunning lake surrounded by snow capped mountains. The sun was shining brilliantly and we enjoyed a drink and picnic by the water watching the small electric boats, SUP paddlers and swans ....no motor boats are allowed on this pristine lake.
As we continued on our way, the road started to wind up the high mountain pass, taking us to the heart of Hohe Tauern National Park. This journey and the views were simply breathtaking - we were completely surrounded by high mountain peaks covered in snow, with iced-over lakes below.
The road then switched back and forward, down into the deep valley to the small village of Heiligenblut. When we checked into our hotel and logged into wifi we received a Find Penguins memory and purely by chance it was 5 years to the day that we were last here - the hotel manager remembered us and was astonished by this....the crazy Australians returning to walk the mountain!
The evening was spent soaking up the views from our balcony in the sunshine.もっと詳しく

Franz Josefs Hohe to Heiligenblut

We were feeling very lucky as the trail from Franz Josefs Hohe to Heiligenblut was opened the day we arrived 😀 The following morning we were transported to the trail head and started our descent to Heiligenblut. We walked this trail five-years ago to the exact day.

We walked in light rain for about 3 hours. It was quite a challenging hike but with ever changing scenery - the picture perfect lake, small villages, caves, canyon and open pastures with cows grazing (the sound of their bells is beautiful).もっと詳しく

Day 2 Pokljuka to Stara Fazina

This morning we woke to heavy rain as predicted 😑 We left our hotel late morning hoping the rain would ease. How wrong we were, it rained heavily for the entire hike of 6 hours. The weather forecast looks no better tomorrow 😬 The best part of the walk was rock hopping all the way down the mountain path (which was actually a running creek/mini waterfall) trying to keep our feet slightly dry ......we failed, but managed not to slip on slippery rocks at least 🌧️もっと詳しく

Shorter day today of only 12km. Started walking at 11:30 hoping the heavy rain would slow, we got lucky and only had a few showers for the hike😁

Day 4 Bohinjska Bistrica to Podbrodo

A beautiful forest path up over the Vrh Bace mountain pass then down to the small village of Podbrdo. Tonight we enjoyed a lovely dinner with a German couple (Anita and Ditmar) who are also walking the trail.もっと詳しく

Day 5 Podbrdo to Grahovo Ob Baci

21.2 km, 1009m ascent, 1207m descent, rating - Difficult
Our day started with a steep 500m climb to the top of the ridge with clear views through the valley. We had the option of shortening this stage but we decided to push on to the next village and catch the train back to our accommodation in Hudajuzna. This path was much longer and more challenging than expected and culminated in a frantic (and not very graceful) backpack sprint for the train. The host of the homestay apartment, Danica, gave us the most beautiful welcome and we enjoyed a memorable night (along with our fellow hikers Anita and Dietmar) around the table with a delicious homecooked meal + beers + local wine + liquor + slivovitz.
