    Tea Ceremony

    September 26, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

When we arrived in Kyoto, the first thing we had booked was a traditional tea ceremony. It is all about being respectful to one another and finding enjoyment out of the simple things in life, such as the sound of flowing water or the taste of matcha tea.

We dressed up in kimonos. Mine was just one robe and one belt. Frankie had two robes on and three belts! Traditionally, you would sit on your knees, but for foreigners it is too uncomfortable so we could sit cross legged.

The ceremony starts with the host cleansing all the equipment for the tea service - bowls, ladles, spoons, etc. Then she serves the tea to each person. We bow to one another to show respect, then drink the tea, making sure to make a loud slurp on the final sip.

We met some friendly Americans from DC. Also in our ceremony were some rude Israeli people 😂
