Arrived at our Air B & B accommodation at Villefranche-de-Conflent in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of the Conflent French Catalonian region around 4.30pm. We walked to the village to buy groceries and to my surprise found a walled town with fortifications on the UNESCO world heritage list. We located a small grocery shop for our shopping and we paid to walk the town wall ramparts. This walking tour gave us an overview of military architecture from the Middle Ages to the 19 century. Walkways were covered by roofs to hide the movement of soldiers from an enemy situated above. Bastions were built so all openings were asymmetrical to make the use of cannon against them difficult. The old town itself was beautifully preserved and was tourist oriented. We purchased food for dinner and breakfast at the grocery store and returned to our modern B&B apartment in Rue Saint-Francois Villefranche-de-Conflent for showers, dinner and to wash clothes.Læs mere
