A big day of site seeing!
August 22, 2025 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C
After a full-on day yesterday and an early start, we decided to slow things down this morning. It was one of those easy, quiet starts the kind you need every now and then when you're traveling. We had some breakfast and eventually we were ready to start our day.
Our first stop was St. Peter’s Basilica. We made a point to get there earlish to try to beat the lines and it paid off! Only a 15-minute wait and we were inside. What made it even more meaningful was entering through the Holy Door, something that’s only opened once every 25 years for people to walk through. The Bascilics itself was breathtaking the detail in every square inch of it was just insane. I thought that I had maybe started to get bored of all of the churches we had seen but this one was truely something else.
After exploring the basilica, we wandered through the streets, heading into the city. We stopped back at the Trevi Fountain to see it in the daylight. It's just as stunning as it is at night so we snapped some more pictures.
Next stop was Giolitti, a gelato shop a friend from work had recommended. Honestly? It lived up to the hype the flavours were so intense. It was definitely some of the best gelato I have ever eaten. Yum!!
From there, we made our way to the Pantheon. We didn’t go inside this time, but just standing in the piazza and taking in that massive, ancient structure was enough.
By mid-afternoon, the heat and the walking caught up with us, so we headed back to the Airbnb for a much-needed siesta. A little rest, a quick recharge, and then we were ready to take on the evening.
Dinner was a quiet one, something simple at home before we set off again, this time to Gianicolo Hill. Another amazing recommendation, and the perfect place to catch the sunset. The views over the city were absolutely magical, and there was even a busker playing live music, which added something really special to the moment. It felt like the city was putting on a show just for us.
As we made our way back down, we passed through a lively piazza near our Airbnb, where people were gathered around a drummer putting on a performance. We sat for a while watching and even caught up with our friends from Florence. It was the perfect way to end the day.
A big day at the colosseum tomorrow and I couldn’t be more excited!Read more
