Today was our big travel day from Salerno to Venice, and for a while, we really thought we had this whole “Italian train system” thing figured out. Spoiler alert we did not.

We showed up to the platform in Salerno feeling confident. Our train number was on the board, the platform was correct, and a train rolled in right on time. Perfect, right? We climbed aboard, settled in, and only then realized… it wasn’t our train at all. Damn.

The culprit? A delayed train that pulled in just before ours was due. Same platform, close enough timing to confuse us, and suddenly we were off to a slightly different Naples station than planned. Thankfully, we had a little luck on our side and we were still heading in the right direction, just not exactly where our tickets said we’d go. With a little help and to our relief, no extra cost we rebooked the next leg of our journey and only ended up an hour behind schedule. Not bad, considering the mini heart attack!

By the time we arrived in Venice, we had completely forgotten about our mishap. We dropped our bags at our accommodation and hit the streets right away. There’s been nothing quite like Venice on our trip so far, the canals winding between buildings, the tiny bridges leading you who knows where, and the soft sound of boats gliding by. It is so beautiful here.

Dinner was an easy choice, a little spot tucked to the side where we could sit, relax, and soak in the atmosphere. Afterward, we treated ourselves to gelato. I had seen this place on Tik Tok and it definitely lived up to the hype! With cones in hand, we strolled through the narrow alleyways finding our way back.

Tomorrow promises a full day of sightseeing, but for tonight, we’re content to have arrived and can’t wait to explore more tomorrow.
