NB Day 6: Mehamn

Leaving Kjøllefjord, the ship continued further north into the Barents Sea and then turned east to go around the northernmost point of Europe.

Yes, yes … I know I said that Nordkapp is accepted as such … with the caveat that it is the northernmost point reachable by a car. And that the actual northernmost point — Knivskjelloden — is not to far away and requires hiking to reach the tip of the cape.

Well, both of those points are on Magerøya Island. I make that distinction, because the northernmost point of the European mainland is Kinnarodden. It too is only reachable on foot after a challenging hike. Or so I’ve been told. We didn’t see the point as we were at dinner at the time.

Once we made it around the cape, our heading changed to a southerly direction for our next stop … 20 minutes in Mehamn at around 7:00p.

As though wanting to make up for the miserable conditions in Kjøllefjord, Mother Nature treated us well in Mehamn. We enjoyed the views from the forward balcony on deck 9 forward under dry skies, with brilliant light … and a hint of sunshine. The kittiwakes — adults and immature — roosting on the ruins of buildings dockside garnered lots of attention.

We have one more port tonight … Berlevåg at 10:00p for 10 minutes. Seeing as how I can’t seem to stop yawning, however, I think I’ll be fast asleep by then.

Tomorrow we reach the “K” in BKB … Kirkenes. When we were on the bridge yesterday, Captain Bruland said that we will have blue skies and sunshine there. We’re going to hold him to that promise.Read more
