Nice journey down to Heathrow, one diversion which saved us getting stuck in traffic. Sat waiting for check in to open. Looking forward to the airport lounge and the Cartier shop.

We've landed in Sri Lanka! After and hour delay at LHR we finally made it to Sri Lanka. The journey was great, big hands up to Sri Lankan Airlines, fabulous service and super comfy seats. Managed to sneak around 6hrs of sleep 😴 which was great. It's bloody hot here! Pauls super excited already! Now on the trek to the hotel in Bentota.Læs mere

First impressions

So the airport was great, all well organised and not busy, got our transfer which was 2 hours from Colombo, it's like wacky races 🤣🤣 so glad we didn't hire a car, everyone drives like they're part of the F1 practice team 🤣🤣 , they don't stop for nothing, expect cows. Arrived at the hotel and it's stunning, staff very welcoming and the views are to die for. Hotel is surrounded by birds and palm squirrels 😁. Looking forward to taking some fab pics with the new lens.Læs mere

First full day in Sri Lanka

Woke up in the early hours this morning to monkeys jumping about on the roof, sounded like they were Banghra dancing 🤣, went back to sleep and woke to glorious sunshine 🌞 wow views are incredible and it's hot hot hot. Breakfast was not disappointing, everything was superb and plenty of it available. Staff are incredible. Spent the morning around the pool, went to the welcome meeting, hopefully get some trips booked, then back to the pool for a dip and chill. Really enjoyed watching the birds and palm squirrels running around 😀 Ellen spotted 2 monitor lizards whilst we went for a walk, when we came back no sight of them, but I did spot a common garden lizard eating ants off the tree. Tried to get some pics of the white bellied sea eagle but he was too far away. Just before sunset we went across the train track to the shops, ended up in the jewellery shop and got myself a silver elephant charm 😊. Back to the hotel and the heavens opened, wonderful tropical thunderstorm! Had a great day and evening, really loving what we've seen so far. Oh and the cleaning staff made the cutest towel elephant, I've named him Professor Alfred Bedbottom. 🙄Læs mere

Another glorious chilled day

Woke up to glorious 🌞 sunshine again, hearing all the birds is fabulous. I got up to look out the window and I saw a red backed woodpecker, couldn't get my camera out quick enough to get a picture but I'll get it next time. Paul and I decided to go for a short walk before breakfast, didn't get far as it was bloody hot 😳. We did see a white throated kingfisher which is absolutely stunning. We decided to have another chill out day so camped out by the pool, and it was superb, not just for the sunshine and drinks but the lizards and birds. Around 4pm our tropical storm arrived, so we packed up the gear and moved indoors for some mango lassi. We have to say the service and food here is exceptional 😋 we've enjoyed everything so far. According to the weather tomorrow, it's a rainy day, let's see what happens.Læs mere

Liquid Sunshine Day

Woke up to cloudy skies and rain, still very warm though, had breakfast and decided that we'll pop on the waterproof coats and go for a walk into Bentota, Ellen and Richard also enquired about upgrading to a swim up room, which they got, and even better for them it's next to the bar! After an hour or so sorting out the room move the rain had gone but the clouds remained, made it a decent mid morning for a walk. Bentota was certainly an eye opener lol we walked to the bridge over the river to spot for crocs, none about, not surprised really we didn't want to be there either 🤣. Went back to the hotel just in time for lunch then straight into the pool, such entertainment watching the birds chasing each other then chasing the squirrels. Took a walk along the beach to watch the sunset which started lovely until the clouds covered it, but overall another lovely day in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. Tomorrow it's a wake up and see what the weather is doing to decide on a train journey to Galle or the bentota river cruise.Læs mere

Bentota River Cruise

Did our first trip today. A river cruise, to get to where we needed to be we had our first Tuk-Tuk ride which was great, onto the boat, we set of, we went up the river and into the mangroves to spot some animals. We saw our first croc, monkeys, fruit bats, 3 species of king fisher and water monitors. Had a walk around the herbal garden and purchased some bits. We loved the trip so much we've booked for an early morning and late afternoon trip for Tuesday. Tomorrow we are off on 2 Safaris. 😁Læs mere

Uddawala and Yala National Park

An early start to the day, up at 3:30am for a 4am start. Picked up at the hotel by Rohan and our driver. The long drive to Uddawala was interesting, the heavens opened and there was very little traffic apart from dogs lol. Arrived a uddawala for our first trip of the day, this did not disappoint, birds, deer, elephants, peacocks, crocs, mongoose and water buffalo, the park is amazing, we were due to go to the elephant orphanage but decided to stay on at uddawala instead which was perfect. Had a fab lunch outside the park on route to yala, pizza and chips 😁. Made it to Yala for the afternoon safari, wow this place is amazing, we saw an abundance of animals, elephants, monitors, birds, monkeys, water buffalo, loads of crocs and leopards just brilliant! The best day we've had so far!Læs mere
