Crianlarich to Tyndrum to Oban
August 19, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C
What a day!! The only day I had to walk a bit o the West Highland Way, and what happened? Storm Betty hit as I clambered my way to the top of the conical hill from Crianlarich to Tyndrum!! Look at this headline from the" Scotsman"
"Weather warning as Storm Betty sweeps into Scotland
Heavy rainfall and high winds are due across large parts of the country this morning.
Warnings for heavy rain and strong winds remain in force across parts of Scotland after Storm Betty brought wet and windy weather."
And of course the worst of it hit as I reached the top of the climb .... An absolutely beautiful hill climb but oh my it took some going. I tightened my grip on my walking poles and took the incline into Ewich Forest.
The forest was truly gorgeous. The pine trees engulfing everything,. I passed wee burns cascading into waterfalls and angry fast flowing rivers and more thick trees. Taking a few moments, to Look around, I was reminded why i wanted to do this trip.
After about 5kms into the forest, the path turns into a massive descent. Really it's an up and down descent and mostly in rivulets ...having to watch every step down those wet rocks and through deep puddles, feet are soaking, as is everything else, grateful for my poncho but my jacket and everything underneath was soaked as well. The last of the walk was through carpets of blooming beautiful Heather, I've never seen such a carpet and it was glorious to behold.
Once in Tyndrum I waited with a lovely Dutch family for the bus back to Crianlarich to pick up my suitcase at the hostel and then bus to Oban ... After a quick meal of sweet potato and baked beans at the hostel, I made my way to the bus stop. The time came and went and no bus in sight so I decided to take the train. This was another uphill walk back past the hostel and now on 17 KMs for the day my legs were beginning to complain! An hour and twenty minute wait for the train, my legs cramped up badly after sitting for half an hour so had to walk again up and down the platform to ease the cramps.
I'm now on the train to Oban and feeling brave, opened my case as the train sped on, undressed to my bra and changed my dress...luckily no-one got up from their seats as I did this.
We have passed Loch Awe as the train speeds on to Oban I am overawed by the scenery even in the rain and overcast day that it is, we're passing waterfalls cascading from the munros, and I notice huge slips of shingle sliding from these monsters.
I feel so small in comparison and grateful for the blessing of walking today. The train let's out a huge toooot every so often signalling we're on our way home, it has been a magical day and I did it!! Here is a description of the walk from an online site,
After crossing the stile into the woodland above Crianlarich, turn left to leave the track and continue along a path that twists and turns northwestwards as it climbs through the trees. It reaches a summit next to a picnic bench and continues to rise and fall. After a mile in the forest it crosses a large footbridge over the Herive Burn. On the other side it continues winding in a rough north-northwestwarly direction; it joins a track for a few hundred metres before leaving this once more and continuing through the trees. The route is easy to follow and obvious on the ground, although some of the descents are steep. It eventually turns to the right to descend with the Allt an t-Saoir on the left to reach the railway line at NN360275.
Descend some steps under a railway viaduct and then turn to the left to rejoin the Old Military Road. It immediately crosses the burn on a bridge and heads on north-northwestwards for a short distance before turning to the right to reach the A82. Carefully cross the road and continue on along an unsurfaced path on the other side; the path parallels the road on the left for a short distance, descending to cross a stile. On the other side follow the edge of a field to reach a wooden clapper gate; on the other side of this is Kirton Bridge over the River Fillan at NN358280.
Go through a kissing-gate and turn right to cross the bridge. On the other side follow a surfaced track northeastwards towards Kirton Farm. Do not enter the farm, and instead turn left in front of it to take another path with the farms barns on the right. After a few yards a complex track junction is reached next to an old graveyard; go through a gate and immediately turn left. Follow the good track northwestwards through several gates as it heads across the edge of the floodplain. After 0.6 miles until the farm and campsite at Auchtertyre is reached.
Follow the track through the middle of the farm and cross the Allt Auchtertyre on a bridge. On the other side of the bridge turn left to follow another good track southwestwards for a third of a mile. Just before the A82 is reached once more at NN349288, turn left to go through a metal gate and join a path that immediately sneaks under the bridge that carries the main road over the River Coonish.
Continue on along a good gravel path with the river on the left. When it meets a track turn left to join this new track. It passes a lovely three-arch stone bridge on the left, at which the path curves to the right to reach the surfaced track that heads over the bridge. Cross the track and head on along a path on the other side, still with the river on the left. When the Crom Allt is met the path turns to the right to follow the stream northwards for a short distance until a track is reached. Turn left along this track to cross the stream to head westwards.
After about a fifth of a mile the track crosses a cattle grid; cross this and after about 200 yards turn right along a small footpath that winds northwards through trees. It roughly parallels the stream for a mile, crossing a gate through a deer fence that leads into an area devoid of any vegetation - the site of an old lead works. Go through another gate on the other side of the cleared area to join a track that runs along the southern bank of the Crom Allt. This track eventually curves to the right to reach a road; turn left to follow the road, passing the By The Way campsite on the left to reach the road near Tyndrum Lower railway station at NN327301.Read more

To Mull today and National Youth Choir
August 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C
Away to the island of Mull today via Caledonian ferries...a stunning voyage out and quickly back, just a bit shorter than I had "imagined" ... I need to do more than imagine if I want to see all I dream of seeing... The day promised to be a mish mash of weather and so it turned out. Mostly tho the sun managed to keep shining for the journey.
Reflecting on the vanishing shoreline of Oban, Islands slipped by with strange rock forms standing out, a lighthouse white with clouds in the background promising to fade it into oblivion. I reminisced about the journey once before with Mary-Ellen, Macayla and James, how excited we all were....reaching Iona at night, grappling our way round a fence, James clinging to my legs, as we reached our highland accommodation for the night.
I stayed on board to make the journey back, glad of a short day of walking, being on the sea and grateful for safe travelling mercies . A quick trip to the information centre to see about my journey to Iona tomorrow and again I was walking to the old Parish church at the other end of the road.
Going to hear The National Youth choir, giving a one night concert, conducted by Christopher Bell. An amazingly entertaining chap on his own, he conducted those youth with such charming, fun and precision I was awestruck by the dazzlingly outstanding, goosebump making performances. Sopranos, altos, Bass's all joining to reach crescendos with spine chilling ease and wonder.
The choice of songs and hymns also helped to make the evening go too quickly and even after a rousing standing ovation we were not privy to another song such was the energy expenditure during the show. Another magical event and day.
On my way back to the hostel I walked with another pilgrim from New Zealand. We stopped at a supermarket to get a few things for dinner and then caught in a downpour as we made our way homeward..my walking companion took my grocery items to allow me to use my walking sticks on the way home. Another angel sent to help.Read more

Oban to Mull to Iona and back
August 22, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 15 °C
An early morning rise today to get the ferry to Craignure on Mull, and on to Iona by further bus then ferry. I could hardly see out of the hostel dining room window for the early morning mist at 5.30 a.m. but proceeded to ready for the day.
A baked potato and half a protein vegan meal, coffee and salty porridge, for breakfast, I was well equipped to see the morning out before reaching Iona. Tramping boots, poncho pulled on and I was eager to go. The journey was to take around three hours.
And what a journey, the mist wrapped around us as we sailed into the middle of the sea journey to Mull when the rain poured down sending most people back inside. As I sat in that rain watching the drama unfold again, it appeared that we came out of a wall of shrouded mist toward Mull. We seemed invisible for a time, as we became engulfed in the mist. I was compelled to sit out here alone, could not bring myself to sit inside when all of the dramatic weather was right in front of us. Clouds gathering and dissipating, mist rolling as the sun tried to penetrate through giving an awesome light and dark hue.
From nowhere, it seemed, my voice awoke, without conscious awareness, I was singing "Po Kare kare ana" very quietly to myself.. yes, not a Scottish song about sailing to the islands, but a Maori waiata! Nostalgia for old times, mum, NZ, my big glorious family there perhaps awaiting a return. It was a wonderful moment as I realised this pilgrimage was about re stepping some of past journeys, about mums journey as a young woman to these shores and her hopes and dreams for her future unravelling.
The drive to Fionnphort ferry from Mull took about an hour and a half and what an amazing bus ride through hills and glens, waterfalls and burns cascading down the munroes and hills, Highland cattle barred our way for a bit, the driver telling us we are not allowed to keep any horns at them, just having to wait til they decide to move.
Then we were to navigate a narrow bridge and since this was only the drives second time driving the route he was very nervous and apologised to anyone who was afraid of narrow bridges. He did really well letting out a huge sigh and laugh of relief after a successful navigation over...
Another ride in a wee ferry which tossed and turned over the water between Fionnphort and Iona. It was only a ten minute journey, over, all too soon. The Abbey itself is still there and as I wandered reflectively through those cloisters and chapels I lit a few candles praying for healing for friends and family. The ruins of a mediaeval nunnery cemented my thoughts and information gleaned that indicates this was the life for many young women who had no wish to marry and be left in peace to follow their own passions within the convent.
The rain was unrelenting and I sheltered for a while having lovely lentil 🍲 soup with a roll and cuppa for lunch, browsing a few of the stores offering island crafts for sale.
The stunning sandy beach at Fionnphort took my fancy as I waited for the bus back to Mull and Oban . Another wonderful day to be grateful for.Read more

Definitely thought you’d start singing Dark Isle but delighted it was a Maori waiata my sister.. it encapsulates all your history and your onward journey too!! Scottish to the core but so mindful of the culture you now inhabit! Love it ❤️💜

My walk into Oban this morning was still blighted by rain even after the glorious sunrise at 5.40 a.m. after visiting the bank 🏧 to make sure I had enough cash for the journey I am now waiting for the 9.20 bus to Fort William. This is the first bus to go to Fort William this a.m.
The trains are on strike again and liable to do so at any time making travel by train unreliable. Again the morning is driech, people are out and about with their dogs, or just doing their morning run, going to work with their costa coffees in hand, just an ordinary morning for them.
I'm off to Orkney today and excited for the journey up to Fort William then across to Inverness to catch the train to Thurso and the ferry from Scrabster to Stromness and a bus to Kirkwall to the hostel there. I anticipated a full day of travel, enjoying the scenery and the joy of again travelling through this beautiful land. The trip to Fort William went smoothly all along Lock Linnhe to Ballachullish and Glen Coe a stunningly beautiful ride through that amazing country side. My heart leapt for joy.
Getting to Fort William in plenty of time to get some late breakfast I popped into Morrisons, my word what a carry on. It took an age to get served then an age for food to appear and only after asking how long it was going to take interrupting a staff member standing around catching up with customers they knew or filling other orders, placing cleaned cups in the racks. After an interminable time I had to ask for take away containers for the food to go when it finally arrived, to catch the bus to Inverness.
This was an amazing trip as well, passed Loch Eil, up to Spean Bridge where memories of Matthew and Rachel's sojourn there in 1990 came flooding back... they had come over to UK to work and tour around before coming back to NZ to begin their family. Matthew was a chef there at Glen Spean Lodge and Rachel a house manager. While they enjoyed their time, they were also pleased to return to NZ.
Twenty minutes into this journey we came across a line of traffic seemingly going on for a mile, a truck carrying heavy farming machinery had come to grief on the road ahead losing an axle!! This was to be my undoing today, lucky that this hadn't happened to me before, the driver informed me that we probably wouldn't make the bus I needed to complete my travel arrangements for the day, but I remained hopeful.
I sat in anticipation all the way to Fort William after the road was cleared which took around 20 minutes. This marred my enjoyment a little of this ride up again through the lochs Eil, linnhe and loch lochy such amazing scenery again I was soaking it in at the same time anticipating what may happen at Inverness, all the while holding my breath.
I was struck by the amount of people at Fort Augustus as we travelled through the beginning of Loch Ness and saw a crowd of people at the Caledonian canal all tourists looking for "Nessie". I certainly enjoyed and anticipated more beautiful sights along the loch before arriving at Inverness.
Sure enough although the driver had called the bus station in Fort William, by the time we got there fifteen minutes late for my bus, it had departed. Rather disappointed, I consoled myself calling the hostel in Kirkwall Orkney to let them know I wouldn't be checking in tonight but could they transfer my bed to Inverness. This they managed to do and so I made my way to the hostel at Inverness.Read more

Getting out of bed this morning at 4.40 a.m. afraid to awaken 5 young women with whom I shared the bunk room. There was Priya a gorgeous girl from Mumbai, India who offered to show me the sights if ever I get there. Priya was on a month's reflection sent by her family to think about getting married, they have found her a suitable husband and at 27 they are getting concerned for her. She has to meet him when she goes home at the end of the month. Priya is a programme manager in a stock exchange in South Mumbai. Veronica from Munich, Marit from Rotterdam, Jenny from Bordeaux and one other whose name I don't recall may have been Marion. She happened to be the largest of the bunch who seized the bunk above me. I thought the mattress would come through squashing me as she threw herself up for the night...
Sounds of young people sleeping, I did my best to organise my things, but of course I tripped, peeling the duvet cover, sheet and pillowcases from their innards to place in the big linen basket for washing,
All was very quiet in the building as it slept, until I was clattering my way down the stairs with my suitcase, back pack, grocery bag and walking poles, phew, glad I had thrown my laundry bundle from the top down through the gap in the stairs to the bottom floor.
Leaving the hostel around 6.15 a.m. of course it began to rain, ☔ so I slipped on my poncho under the shelter of a large tree. A bracing walk up the hill then walk back down into the town centre and train station of Inverness for the train to Thurso, I passed a beautiful statue of a superb unicorn, mascot of Scotland and came across a sign for coffee outside the Royal Hotel.
The sign lied, there was no serving of anything until 7 a.m. but I couldn't resist a couple of photos of the inside of this beautiful Victorian structure built originally as a school in the 18th century.
The walk to the ferry ⛴️ at Scrabster took me longer than I anticipated, along the sea front the ferry port could be seen in the far distance and my knees cracked onRead more

To Broughty Ferry and sad news
August 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
Today I received the sad news that my friend and colleague, Lin, had passed away on Friday. I had hoped that she's stay with us until I got back to New Zealand to say a final farewell, but it wasn't to be. We have shared so much over the years both at work and over zoom meetings since during our monthly supervision sessions. I will miss her humour and her insightful input to my practice. I forgot to tell my friend Ann as we readied for our trip out today.
Ann and I went to Broughty Ferry, another nostalgic journey as I lived here for a couple of months during my first every visit home to Scotland in 1990. The wee shops are lovely, full of local and other crafts, jewelry, scottish mostly, attesting to the workmanship that here abounds.
We lunched in a wee cafe, enjoying the sounds of other Scottish folk enjoying their catch up times, me smiling to myself as I make a mental note to remember them once back in New Zealand.
The day trickled on as we realised it was almost 4 p.m. by the time we were ready to make our way home, another day full of memories.Read more

August 29, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C
Ann took Colin to the hospital for his monthly infusion of good stuff to keep him in good health. We spent the morning chatting after a bit of washing was done and hung on the line.
We would head into town again after Colin's treatment was done and Ann had picked him up again to bring him home. He was no sooner home than out the door again to carry on working on his project.
Air fares we found have risen sharply again..so I decided to search on line myself after we had deduced ,1800 pounds was far too much to pay to get home to NZ.
We searched shops for a couple of beads for a Christening book I found for wee Lachlan Alexander Dawn McGregor!!! It was missing a couple of wee pearls. We eventually found a pair of earrings we could match with the two beads already on the wee book. I was delighted.Read more

How I love these early morning starts, the city is quiet, beginning to wake up as my suitcase clatters along the empty streets. I'm sure I'll get there in time so sit quietly in a "Gregg's" cafe to drink my morning coffee and two vegan sausage rolls!! What a treat!!Read more

Sherwood forest to London
September 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C
Up early again so that I could get to Sherwood forest before catching the 12.30 bus to London, I reluctantly left my lovely little room and ensuite for the streets of Nottingham just waking up to the day. I was amazed again at the size of the buildings here, they seemed to loom over the streets in their magnificence.
I was well in time to catch the bus, not wanting to miss it, as, if I did I wouldn't be seeing the forest at all. It took about an hour to get out to the forest from Nottingham and I enjoyed watching the streets and farm lands pass by as we made out way North.

After all my travels and wanderings, to reach London and my sister and brother in law's home feels like a sanctuary. I have felt the effects of the miles on my physical self, my feet groaning, griping, whining with complaints, longing to sit a while, bide a wee.
Despite this we are off to the Oasis church at Lambeth today I am certainly going to give thanks for the blessing of physical ability and travel mercies. Away in the tube, or two and a bus, we enjoyed the busi-ness of London Bridge where I was right up close to the houses of parliament and big ben and Westminster as I have never been before. Just the scale of the buildings is awesome.
We met some lovely people at Megs and Colin's church which believes in inclusion and service within the community doing so much work wherever they see a need. I kept falling asleep during the service but was very aware of my head lolling to the side to embrace the stranger next to me. She didn't seem worried at all, I just hope i didn't snore!Read more

TravelerAhh...your early morning waking & wanderings around city centre's & in particular brings to mind these words from William Wordsworth's sonnet: "Earth has not any thing to show more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by A sight so touching in its majesty: This City now doth, like a garment, wear The beauty of the morning; silent, bare, Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie Open unto the fields, and to the sky; All bright and glittering in the smokeless air. Never did sun more beautifully steep In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill; Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep! The river glideth at his own sweet will: Dear God! the very houses seem asleep; And all that mighty heart is lying still!"

A trip to Windsor today is one on my last outings before I leave these shores once more for New Zealand. With a heavy heart I said goodbye to my baby sister and her husband on Saturday night as they were leaving for their holiday in Turkey. Popped at the post I awoke at 3.54 a m. To wish them farewell but they had already gone. That was a bit sad
Then on Tuesday I journeyed over to Southampton to see my newly found cousins, the gorgeous Mackie clan, John, Jean, Gill and Phil....another sad farewell.. so this is about it for now I fly out on Saturday with a visit to beaire on Friday night for a spa treatment my daughter sent me...and am so looking forward to that.Read more

We have landed slightly late and weary but not as weary as I thought. On board I spent a lovely couple of times with a couple whose crying baby could not be settled til grannie Linda came to the rescue... poor wee might had sore tummy .... but he soon settled and went to sleep for me twice... the parents were very relieved as I think the whole cabin was, he had a loud screamy cry.
We're now waiting in huge line of people at customs, but I caught the eye of an aid who took me to electronic check out and was through quickly. Mary-Ellen and grandson James were waiting for me with a big bunch of flowers and a welcome home balloon✈️ but biggest gift was themselves hugs galore, tears and laughter 😅😥❤️🩹💙...
I managed to stay awake til the afternoon when I succumbed to the closing of eyes. Later in the evening Mary-Ellen and I went to the school boarding house to say hello to my great granddaughter, Bailey who just kept hugging and kissing me arms firmly wrapped saying how much she missed me. It was a tearful reunion again, but happy as well.
After a good nights sleep grandson James chauffeured me to the supermarket as we prepared to make a family dinner for my great granddaughters 15th birthday. She had ordered a vegie lasagna, rice pudding with vanilla sponge (bought by Mary-Ellen) for a birthday cake!! So dinner took me the rest of the day to prepare. So glad to get here for her birthday.
Philip (son in law) picked her up after LLP school while Mary-Ellen and and I went out to the airport again to say hello to my daughter Sarah who was on her way to Motueka to be with my three grandsons, Liam, Connor and Lachlan while my son Matthew and his wife, Rachel go on a 6 week tour in America and Europe for their respective 50th birthdays.
We had a lovely family dinner and caught up with our various goings on my great granddaughter so more grown up and doing well at school. My grandson enjoying his time at his classes in a social work certificate course before undertaking his degree in early childhood next year.Read more

Leaving UK flying home to NZ family
Sep 18–22, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C
Well folks that's it...my big adventure almost over with just 30 hours til I touch down in NZ.
It has been an amazing experience and I'm going home to reflect, write and keep in touch. I was so glad I'd taken my big suitcase out to the airport yesterday, as there was no train from the station at Barons Court today. They are working on the lines so that meant a big walk this afternoon into Hammersmith with 9 kilos on my back and three in a carry all!!
There I caught the bus to Osterley which got caught in Traffic, and took a bit longer adding to concrn that we wouldn't name it in time to collect my suitcase from left luggage. As I walked I gave myself a good talking to. The worst that could happen would be paying for extra time!! So my heart rate under control with my 7/4/8 breathing, I slowed down and gave myself a good pat on the back for taking care of myself.
Then it was down a ramp under the road and up another ramp to Osterley station to catch the underground to Heathrow...right into the terminal. It's amazing!! We're away ...cheerie for now xxx❤️🩹💖💕💕 ps ..sunrise near Doha photo and boarding passes, and done if the route it was an easy journey ...Read more
