Museo Larco and the Bus

The bus is pretty sweet here. For 2 soles (the equivalent of 60 cents), I could go clear across town to visit the Larco Museum. Great to get out of Miraflores to see some other parts of town that are less tony. The museum area was middle class homes with tidy facades.

I spent a couple hours reading all the display information - in Spanish. I am amazed at how much I know and how much I can figure out without peeking at the English. I learned a lot. Did you know that the Incas where only in power for 150 years? There were a have dozen other cultures with significant artifacts unearthed in Peru dating back some 4,000 years. They describe the three key elements sky, earth and underworld with three animals: birds, felines, and serpents. These themes thread through all the civilizations that ruled the north, south and central Peru.

What I couldn’t believe was the quality of the incredibly well-reserved textiles; some as old as the 9th century! You know I love textiles. I’m hoping to find more places I can learn more about it.

I had to pause (reading everything takes a long time) for a pricey yet elegant meal in the museum restaurant. Traditional quinoa, choco (corn), red bell pepper, cheese of unknown type, and olives. Peru is a fusion food place.

I saved the erotic sculptures and pottery section until the end. If you can think it, there is a sculpture for that here. What I thought was most interesting is how women and women’s bodies were not shown as just receptor for male sexuality. There were actual pottery depicting vaginas.

More grocery shopping and finally cooked an actual dinner - in the host’s kitchen. Nothing extravagant but I now have a nice supply of meals, snacks, treats and my stash of gin to fuel my adventures.

El autobús es tan bueno aquí. Para 2 soles (lo mismo de 60 centavos), pueda cruzar la ciudad y visitar el Museo Larco. Fue excelente salir Miraflores para ver otras partes de la ciudad que no son tan a la moda como Miraflores. El barrio del museo tenia casas de clase media con rostros ordenados.

Pasé unas horas leyendo todas las placas de información - en español. Me sorprende lo mucho que sé y cuántos puedo resolver sin mirar inglés. He aprendiendo mucho. ¿Sabes que los incas mantuvieron poder durante 150 años? Había una docena de otras culturas con artefactos significativos desenterrados en Perú que datan de hace unos 4.000 años. Describen los tres elementos clave: cielo, tierra y inframundo con tres animales: aves, felinos y serpientes. Estos temas recorren todas las civilizaciones que gobernaron el norte, el sur y el centro de Perú.

Lo que no podía creer era la calidad de los textiles increíblemente bien conservados; algunos tan antiguos como el siglo IX! Sabes que me encantan los textiles. Espero encontrar más lugares donde pueda aprender más al respecto.

Tuve que parar (leyendo todo lleva mucho tiempo) para uno almuerzo cara pero elegante en el restaurante del museo. Comí comida tradicional - quinua, choco (maíz), pimientos rojos, queso (no sé el tipo), y aceitunas. Perú es un lugar de comida fusión.

Salvé las esculturas eróticas hasta el final. Si puede pensarlo, hay una escultura para eso aquí. Lo que pensé que era más interesante es cómo las mujeres y los cuerpos de las mujeres no se mostraron como sólo para el sexualidad masculina. Había, en realidad, cerámicas que representaba vaginas.
