Grenada - Caribbean Cooking Lesson

Today I was back in Grenada. The Spice Island. If you love to cook, you will love it here. On Saturday’s they have a huge outdoor market, where you can buy spices. Grenada is known for its Nutmeg. And you can get it in many different forms; Nutmeg syrup, Nutmeg Jam, Nutmeg Jelly... just to mention a few. You can also get Turmeric, Cinnamon, Mace, ... anything you need for cooking.

Speaking of cooking, today I was part of a Caribbean cooking class. First they demonstrated how to make the nutmeg cheesecake. Then we made a Gingered Pumpkin Soup. And our main dish was Mari Mari or Dorade (fish) with gravy and sweet potato mash. Super fun. And really good food. Nice way to start my new year.Meer informatie

Dominica - A magical place

Back on my favorite island of the caribbean islands - Dominica. Such a magical place. So many cool spots to explore. Dominica still battles the after effects of Hurricane Maria from 2017. A lot of the green nature has newly grown within the last two and a half years. Crazy seeing how green the island must been compared to now. And the people are so incredible nice.

If you wanna experience their way of life and their love for music, pop into the Ruins bar, right at the port of Roseau. Such a vibrant place although it literally is a ruin after the hurricane. However, they play live music and the atmosphere is just so nice.

Today my shore excursion brought me to the Trafalgar Falls. Two waterfalls from two different water sources. The higher one is called Papa Fall. It’s origin comes from the freshwater lake. The smaller but thicker one is the mama fall. Its origin comes from the Breakfast river.

Next stop was once again my favorite spot on the island: Titou Gorge. It’s a place they filmed a scene of Pirates of Caribbean. It’s a canyon you can swim through to get to a waterfall that lays within. For the first minute the water is ice cold but your body pretty quickly gets used to it. Always again stunning. The current of the waterfall was pretty strong today due the rainfall.Meer informatie

Bonaire - Exclusive Snorkeling Tour

Back in Bonaire. Today I got to go on a Yacht 🛥 ride along the coastline with two Snorkeling Spots. Did you know that Bonaire is a paradise for diving and snorkeling? The water is so clear. And it all is National Park and therefore under protection. You are not even allowed to drop an anchor to save the corals. Bonaire itself does not have much to see. There are the salt lakes and Flamingos. The salt pyramids. The slave houses. And that’s it. But you got beautiful beaches, different shades of blue water and a stunning underwater world. Not much else you could ask for.Meer informatie

Aruba - 130 feet under

Today I got the chance to experience Aruba 130 ft under via a Submarine Tour. Should you ever make it to the “One happy Island”, look for the Atlantis. The Captain even let me join the cockpit. Pretty cool job those guys have. Granted, my job was pretty awesome as well today. While going over the reef we got to see hundreds of fish and a ship wrack.Meer informatie

Curacao - Willemstad, Famingos and Beach

Welcome to Willemstad. A beautiful city that is also called the Amsterdam of the Caribbean Islands. Lots of things to see. The Queen Emma Bridge, which is a swinging bridge that opens for boats to pass through. If you see a black flag, make sure to hurry over as the bridge will stay open up until 60 minutes. You can take the free ferry to the other side instead. If the orange flag is hissed, you can wait as the bridge will only stay open for 15 minutes. Just walk around and find the almost hidden artwork. And the ladies will probably be happy to hear that you can do some nice shopping there. As a Victoria’s Secret addict I’m happy to report there is a small shop in Punda (which is the heart of Willemstad).

After a little stroll through the city center, we got on a bus and drove towards the Jan Kok Plantage. You pass by the salt lakes and usually can see some flamingos. Today they all have been on vacation. 🤣 Not one single Flamingo 🦩 to see for our guests. Oh well, they are wild animals so luckily they have a free will to be wherever they want to be.

We did visit the Jan Kok Plantage House, which nowadays is an art gallery. At the entrance you are greeted by a huge Iguana statue.

After a brief visit our bus took us to Porto Mari Beach. Beautiful little bay with white sand and turquoise water. A bit too crowded for my taste though. Apparently you can also snorkel there. I didn’t try as I have one more day until I’m allowed back into the water thanks to my new Tattoo that I got last time in Bonaire. At the beach you get greeted by some strange fellas: a couple of pigs. They are quite friendly and beg for food. But don’t be fooled, they look sweet but they can bite. You can also find signs everywhere that say not to feed the pigs. There is also a nice little beach restaurant where you can buy drinks and food. I can only recommend the pulled chicken sandwich with fries.

As crew of a cruise ship where even we have to pay for the use of wifi, we are always on the hunt for free access. Porto Mari Beach does have free wifi. In Willemstad itself, you can find free wifi as well. Starbucks is one possibility but also a lot of other places.

Alright, that was pretty much my day on Curacao. Tonight there is crew painting, where I can let my very own Van Gogh out. 😂 Or something like it.Meer informatie
