    Mother's day

    Happy Mothers Day.
    I am blessed to be able to spend it in Colombia with Sam Meadows and Harriet Barber.
    We went on a tour of a coffee finca about 20 minutes from where we are staying. We got there in a Willy's Jeep, great for the twisty, turny bumpy road. We were given small baskets,which the pickers would use that hold 1kg if coffee beans. After an introduction on how the plants are grown we had to walk among the coffee plants and pick some beans. It's not harvest time so there weren't that many red or yellow ones.
    We were shown each process- washing, peeling, drying and roasting of the beans. At the end we were given a demonstration of how to make a great cup of coffee and we had a small cup to try. I don't drink coffee but I did have a few sips. Everyone said it was very good.    Læs mere

    Salento

    We are now in Salento, a 4 hour bus ride from Cali.
    Up in the mountains and it is beautiful. Sam and Harriet are with us for the weekend. They have gone off for a 5 hour hike but we have chosen to relax for the morning. We will do a bit of exploring as well.Læs mere

    Cali river walk

    Early start this morning for a bird watching walk along the Cali river. 3 hours walking and spotting birds with our guide. He was great at seeing birds and identifying their calls. We saw 22 different species of all shapes, sizes and colours. We also visited the Cat Park. A display of cats painted by different artists as part of a competition some years ago. They were really interesting and beautiful.
    When we got back to the hotel there was a tropical storm, which has made it so much cooler. So glad it didn't rain on our walk.

    Wanderings in Cali.

    We headed off to the Botanical Gardens in Cali today only to discover they were shut! Note to self check opening times before leaving!
    So went to the Christ the Redeemer view point instead. Stunning views over the city and surrounding valley.
    We had a wander around the streets in the area we are staying in. Lots of street art, steep roads and white houses. It is very interesting.
    There is a ping pong tournament in the hotel now, which we are not getting involved in. But everyone sounds like they are enjoying it.    Læs mere

    Cali -day 1

    Arrived in Cali. I lived here in 1985, not that I am recognising anything at all. Staying at a hostel where the average age is about 20. Sitting in the bar while the young things are doing Karaoke in German, Spanish and English. The party bus leaves at 10pm and we won't be on it!
    Have visited an ice cream place where the flavours included hamburger with strawberries! Chris had passionfruit with pork scratchings. I was not as adventurous settling for mango sorbet. The joys of travel.    Læs mere

    Commune 13

    The fun continues. We went on a walking tour of an area called Commune 13. Our guide spoke perfect English and was fascinating. Medellin is split into districts and people living in each one are from the same socio-economic background. In the poorer ones the government fund building schools, supplying electricity and water. In the wealthier ones the residents pay higher prices for the infrastructure.
    In Commune 13 there are 6 flights of escalators that the government have installed as the district is built on the side of a very steep mountain. The escalators mean the residents can get to work easily.
    It is an incredible and crazy place.
    Leaving Medellin tomorrow and going to Cali where I lived and worked in 1985 to 1986.    Læs mere

    More Medellin exploration

    Colombia day 3.
    We used the metro and cable cars today. There is a local election today so all public transport is free so that people can go and vote.
    The cable car takes you up over the mountain to a natural area which is very lush. The first cable car takes you over a sprawling township like area of poor housing spread across the steep mountainside. This cable car was funded by the govt. So that people can get to work.
    We then had to take a second one that is more aimed at tourists which you have to pay more for.
    Once at the top there is a cafe and various food stalls. We took a bus to a lake and jungle area. It was another wonderful day but after over 20,000 steps my feet are now sore!    Læs mere

    Exploring Medellin

    Colombia, day 2.
    Started with brunch at a lovely restaurant that Sam and Harriet go to a lot. Delicious.
    Then a walk around the Botanical Gardens. They are lovely, so many trees, plants, huge iguanas wandering around and terrapins in the lake. It was very busy with families picnicking, relaxing or having photo shoots in the most spectacular meringue dresses!
    Sam and Chris went to a football match, which they enjoyed.
    Then my final birthday present-a salsa lesson with Alejandro, their salsa teacher. Great fun.
    The day was completed with another delicious meal at a Bao restaurant.    Læs mere

    Medellin

    They were working so they sent us out to lunch and up a hill, where they have built a replica village. Very pretty and great views.
    Once they finished work we headed out, river walk, amazing meal and then the best of all a salsa club. At midnight the Willie Colon tribute band, who were incredible, came on. The club was heaving, everyone dancing and singing all the words. Blown away, took me back to my misspent youth in Colombia in the 80s.    Læs mere
