Kirkwall Day 2

we got up early and caught the first shuttle bus into town and got the local bus to Skara Brae. A neolithic settlement discovered 1870 when a storm removed the sand dune that has been covering it.it was occupied about 5 000 years ago for 600 years. We also visited Skaill House on the site
We caught the bus back to town and then stayed on to visit the Italian chapel. This was created by Italian PoWs during the 2nd WW. They were employed to help build the Churchill barriers to protect the British fleet.
We visited the Orkney museum with a lot more information about neolithic times and then the Picts and the Vikings and on to modern times.Read more
