    21. august 2025, Skotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We went on a tour that Liz had booked to the south of the island. The tour guide was called Grant and he had been brought up on the island. He showed us lots of places where they had filmed the Shetland TV series. Starting with Jimmy Perez's house on the water front. Then a look out over the town where they had built a lot of new houses which were brightly coloured.
We then went to look at some ruined houses that had been lived in until the 50's. Before oil and gas was discovered in the north sea Shetland was very poor, now it is very prosperous. We stopped opposite Mousa Island where there is a iron age Broch.
We went to St Ninians beach where there is a tombola, a sandwich strip that leads to an island. the sea comes in on both sides. The largest in the UK. we saw seals on a nearby beach.
Then we went to Jarlshof . There are remains from stone age, bronze age iron age, Norse, and then 17c. They were covered in sand and a storm uncovered them. Lastly we went to the lighthouse at the very south of mainland Shetland The airport is down here and we had to drive across the runway.
Grant showed us an outfit he had worn for Up Helly As.
