Day 4 - Driving to Te Anau

    December 6, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Laura drove us to the PaknSave fuel station near the airport because we had a 10c/L off voucher from the groceries the day before. But you had to pay at the pump which I've never done before and certainly not with a travel card! It took two goes but we got it, because the card is "credit" not "savings" as I first selected. Then Laura filled up the tank but forgot to close the petrol lid! So as we approached the roundabout, someone honked at us to let us know! It was pretty funny cause at first we thought he was just being rude. Turns out he was being very helpful! Laura then drove us to Mossburn, all long the lake from Queenstown, with new mountains appearing and old mountains disappearing behind us. We saw lots of sheep and deer and cows, and the best was watching them climb up on the rocky mountainside. They knew where the good grass was and they weren't going to miss out! Then we put on some of the best of 90s playlist because we ran out of Maroon 5 songs that we knew and it became like car karaoke which was awesome. In Mossburn Laura got a bit tired so I jumped in the driver's seat, and then it started bucketing!! It was so wet, but we have a back window wiper which helped a lot with keeping tabs on the Tarago behind me. Eventually we got to Te Anau town and Laura directed us from there because otherwise google takes you on 10km of unsealed road and we did not want that. We got to the Barnyard backpackers and it is the CUTEST little place. We have a cabin with a mega view and our own bathroom, and the kitchen and communal space is awesome. We hung out on a table with power and wifi for an hour, sorting through photos and I did my support development work before we cooked burritos for dinner which was tasty - good to get some veggies in! Then we did our evenings research and chatgpt was very helpful this time around.
    We looked up
    Who's Ferg?
How do you make artificial snow?
When was the Remarkables road built?
What is the cotton thing that falls from the sky?
    Population of Arrowtown?
What are the origins of "Shotover"?
What does MG stand for (car company)
Do we have a bee crisis in Australia?
What are the NZ road rules and markings?
I wanted to look up the NZ notes and coins but it was after 9pm and my phone turned on black and white mode! So I'll have to try again tomorrow. We also swapped out spotify wrapped stories but Laura shares her account with her brother and sister so it is very warped to what her sister listens to.
After washing up we came back to the cabin to shower and get to bed, it's such a nice shower that you can actually get at a nice temperature!

    Day 16 - Auckland

    December 18, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

What a different start to the day after the last two weeks! I woke up and no one was in my room! I took my time getting dressed and then went up stairs to have brekky with Bethany. I had some gluten free muesli which was basically rice pops and cornflakes in a cereal together. Then she gave me lots of food to take on my walk so I took a banana muffin, a carrot, a muesli bar and 2 cheese, cucumber, lettuce and aoli sandwiches.
Bethany had to leave for work so she left around 8 and I helped pack last night's present packing work in her car. Then I finished getting ready and walked to the bus!
It was so empty and such quick traffic for peak hour. It was a dream! I got off in the city and walked through Victoria Park, then to the skytower to give it a nod and see what's at the bottom (not a shopping centre!) And then walked to Albert Park before heading to the wharf. I ate my morning tea and then found the pier I needed (13!) And lined up in the ferry queue. A few people didn't realise that you couldn't use the public transport card to get on this ferry and had to run back and buy a ticket. I hopped on the ferry and sat next to a lady called Kathy from Idaho and we chatted about what walks we might do, and then about where we from and what we'd done in the south island for the last two weeks. It was nice and really easy! But then I didn't know what the etiquette was for doing the walk together up to the summit, so when we got off we kept leap frogging each other. Eventually I ended up in front but walking on my own and Kathy met an American born Indian boy called Josh. I listened to them chat to each other for a while and Kathy shared about her two adopted Korean children who came along before her own biological daughter after 17 years. She's now divorced from that husband and travelling the world as she nears retirement. He is back at school in Berkley in California doing finance. Eventually at a junction where the road split off to the caves I caught up to them, after they overtook me at a lookout and we all ended up finishing the walk together. Neither of them had much to say about me a Christian so I just kept that light.
We got to summit, walked around the crater, ate some snacks, and then Josh and I headed down the same way so we could get to some lava caves while Kathy went down a different route because she was going on a different ferry home. We chatted mostly about politics and the state of America and the uselessness of still using fahreinheit. It was simply chat. We got to the caves but they were a bit underwhelming. They weren't big enough to get through so I crawled as far as I could, took a photo, and then we walked the rest of the way down about Australian and New Zealand accents, Australian wildlife and media.
Once we got to the bottom we found somewhere nice to sit and I ate my sandwiches while Josh ate a protein bar, I guess he only had time to quickly get to the shops from the airport.
Then we met Kathy at the bottom wild made it back from a walk and we chatted until our ferry came. On the ferry Josh managed to find a couple who lived in the same city as him, super small world. We said goodbye at the wharf when the ferry arrived and I went to the gift store to stock up on postcards! Then I caught the bus home, walked on Sylvia road, and got back to the house. After calling the horse place to pay my deposit, and then cancelling my booking for Friday night, I had a shower and then chopped up the veggies for tonight's dinner, cucumber and tomato, to go with a salad. Then I wanted for Bethany to get home and we unpacked her car of all the end of year gifts she got from school and then drove back into the city. Back to Albert Park! I met her friend Sarah there who's a pharmacist and we had a picnic dinner in the park which was nice. Then they left to go to Handel's Messiah at the town hall and I caught the bus back. I pulled in all my clean washing and repacked my suitcase listening to the end of Harry Potter 6 at last!

    Day 17 - Hamilton

    December 19, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

I stopped off after half an hour to get some groceries for the week (some up&go's, apples and carrots, and some Macca's for lunch, and then continued on driving enjoying listening to the seventh Harry potter and driving with assisted cruise control! The further I get through these books the more confused I am that Dumbledore entrusted the murder of another wizard to a teenage boy. What was he thinking?!
The drive to Hamilton is beautiful, it's all very green on the way! I arrived in Hamilton and went to Waikato museum which was all about the history of Kirikiriroa Hamilton and how it came to be, and had a particularly fun exhibition on the history of swimwear following their swimming journey, and a portrait exhibition.
I walked up and down the main street but it was pretty dead, before heading to my bnb to check in. The couple were both out so I helped myself inside, brought everything into my cute room, before getting changed, locking up, and heading over to the Turner's.
It was so much fun!! I love giant ministry family's. I met Maddy's parents, Becky and Max, husband Mike and 4 kids, Issy, Marcus, JoJo and Annie. Issy and I got on very well, she's very mature for her age! They also have a gorgeous dog called Milby who sat in my lap for about half an hour which was so cuddly and cosy. Mike is working as the assistant Minister at Hamilton South community church and it was cool to hear how he and Maddy have started up this holidays kids club which everyone is involved in including her parents!
Maddy and I caught up about college and when I told her I was doing AFES at USyd she told me she knew Rowan from their old church in Ashbury! And then when I told her I was at st Bede's in Drummoyne, she said she knew Em and Iain! And Mike knew Simon from a job he did for a few months. Such a small world!
We had a great time having dinner, chatting about the funny differences between new Zealand and Australia and what life has been like across the ditch. Issy and I had a fan girl moment over the hunger games movie. We enjoyed lasagne and garlic bread for dinner, and I even had some capsicum with the salad! Then it was Becky's 65th birthday so we had birthday cake too which was a lot of fun! I left around 8 when the kids were getting tired and not enjoying the people company too much, and headed back to my bnb which was funny because I walked in and the hosts were wondering where I was. The guy was sitting on his couch with no shirt on and his partner was in the kitchen offering me ice cream and milkshakes which was cute. I had a shower, which the guy had to show me how to use because you adjust the temperature through the intensity of pulling the handle in or out, rather than side to side. After my shower I planned my day tomorrow popped the tv on in my room watching From Paris with Love with John Travolta and the guy from bend it like Beckham who I love but with an American accent instead of Irish. The tv conked out part way through the movie, and then came back on again so I caught the last 20 minutes of the movie. It probably had a great plot twist but I missed it, and then when the movie ended and I scrolled the channels, I found the movie again at the same point where the tv conked out! So I'm gonna watch a bit more before going to bed.

    Day 18 - Hamilton

December 20, 2023 in New Zealand

And we survived another bnb! Without the second b. Also it was in a way less dodgy place. The couple weren't around when I woke up, so I had my up& go ( normal, not protein and it was so quick to drink!) And got dressed and packed and quietly left the house. I drove almost all the way back to Maddy's place where there was a lookout, so I went for a short walk up there to get a view of the city. It was a nice time just praying to God and handing over next year's worries to him.
After that I took my ring off to put sunscreen on and left it on the centre console. By the time I arrived at the zoo it had all fallen apart in the cup holder! But I managed to put it back together without instructions, fairly quickly!! So pleased. I got to the zoo at basically opening time and bought my ticket, got a map, and got walking! We started in the rainforest section which had a lot of monkeys of different kinds, and then as I walked past the ducks in a very algae filled lake, I saw the zookeepers walking with the tigers!! I was a bit confused because I was about to walk over to the tigers and didn't know if I'd find any. Turns out they were going for a walk while the other keepers put the meat in the enclosure for them to find when they got back. So after about ten minutes of waiting, in which I agree my own muesli bar, the tiger came back, climbed up a tree and got his meat! It was epic to watch! The next thing I was keen to go see were the giraffes so I headed back that way and got to see two giant giraffes eating their lunch from a very tall like! Then I went to the rest of the savannah enclosure (the giraffes had been moved to the wetlands) and saw ostriches, zebra, and bison. Ostriches are ginormous!! The last big thing I got to see were southern white rhinos, they were so majestic, I'm not sure if ever seen rhinos before!! They were very snoozy in the heat, I was sweating like crazy.
After the zoo I drove over to the gardens. The entry was under construction so we started in the English gardens themselves. First I got lunch, a lamb and rosemary pie, from the cafe and ate that by the water. Then I bought a map so I could keep track of where I was going and wandered from left to right. They were specular. I was speechless. The gardens were really fun because I could come and go as I pleased, and unlike the zoo I never had to wait for anything to appear! There were a bunch of school kids on vacation care though who were a bit crazy so we were all trying to avoid their path.

    Day 19 - Rotorua

    December 21, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

I arrived in Rotorua after a very speedy drive, with roadworks again. I checked into my motel and I'm next door to some rowdy boys who were obnoxiously playing their music very loudly. I managed to get everything I needed for the night up without bringing my suitcase up the flight of stairs so that was good. I then drove to a lookout for the lake, which smelt of sulfur but was so full of birds and there was a lot of poo on the road that I didn't feel like walking much for the sake of not having to declare these shoes. So I walked around the government house precinct which was well manicured and then I went to the redwood treewalk. The forest is pretty incredible, the trees are so tall!
I arrived the same time a group of came, but 8 is the maximum allowed on the bridges. They went up before me but I hung back after the second bridge so they could go in front so I didn't get rushed forward by the kids who were super excited. At some point you get to climb up a flight of stairs which takes you maybe 20m above the ground, it feels pretty tall! It's to see the tallest tree in the forest. It feels very magical in there, it's strangely peaceful being surrounded by such tall trees.
After the treewalk, I went and collected some more postcards, preempting going to the thermal pools and Mt Marangui in Tauranga. So I don't think I have any more postcards to collect! Then I headed back to my motel, but the street was closed! There were Christmas street markets happening! I quickly took my stuff inside and then went down on the street. There was live music and lots of food trucks and hand made goods market stalls. It was very a very nice vibe. I grabbed some "smashed strawberries" which were strawberries covered in melted chocolate and then I got a biscoff topping too. I took it back to the motel, made my noodles and heated up the veggies leftover from yesterday, and then had dinner and dessert before heading back to the markets to enjoy the vibe and live music while I wrote the beginning of this entry. Then I went back to the motel to chat to Sharmini and Rhaneela and I word vomited so hard because I hadn't spoken to anyone properly for 2 days! It was really nice to catch up with them. As the call came to an end the riotous boys from next door showed up slamming tables and doors and bottles and being so noisy. Thankfully they passed out pretty fast so it was a quiet night but I struggled to get to sleep.
Then something really strange happened. Someone called me. And because I had my headphones in it automatically answered. It was a woman who said hello, but I hung up without responding. Then they called again! It was so weird because it was a private number so I couldn't contact them back. But no one really has my number here so I think it was a spam. I only got about 4 hours of sleep last night so I hope I sleep well tonight!!
