• Moving to the North

    28. Juli in Island ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Departure from Snaefellness, direction “the North”. Driving day. Before hitting the 350km road, we make a short stop at a small beach near the hostel, as well as the famous local football field (we saw a great movie in the hostel about the team - check out “The Home Game”) . Decision is made to take the coastal road (gravel) - instead of the standard route: really nice landscapes along the ocean. Not much traffic, just the sheep-jams (see picture).

Since not many highlight seem to be on the way, we turn off at the Shark-Museum . Good choice . A ln active farm that produces “hákarl”, the fermented Greenland shark - Iceland delicacy. They explain the story, the production process - and offer the tasting of this ammonia-dish 😱🤢😷. This one tastes (smells). a little less extreme than the one in Reykjavik.

Quick Picnic on a random lake , in the cold wind, then a Visit to Erikstadir - a little authentically rebuilt Viking longhouse (made of turf) with stories about the Viking life. Pas mal. We listen to the stories for an hour and hit the road again.

Onwards…. A bit boring drive through the “Dalir”, a green area between the west Fjord land and the Snaefellnes Peninsula.

We arrive in our small Neat cottage
.. and so does, an hour after us , another French family. Double booking 🤣. The booking agency organizes another cottage for us - equally nice . Cooking and relax from this lazy day. Tomorrow, horse riding in the morning, then Trollaskagi peninsula
