    Reykjavik strolling

    July 25, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Easy start… discover Reykjavik. Sweet Little capital (LOU keeps highlighting how small it is 😃). Drizzle rain 🌧️ and wind 💨 . Old harbor, whale museum, Harpa concert hall, the famous Hallgrimskirka… all very relaxed here . Lunch = hotdog (Icanders love them). Afternoon hop to the Gotta lighthouse - but access unfortunately not allowed until end July (bird protection). We enjoyed the funny tiny hot spring next to the parking. Strangely, not a single tourist disturbs our family sit in. AC and Jan go for a tete-a-tete dinner … with a kind offer by the waiter : Hakarl (rotten Greenland-Shark) on the house… got to try, despite all warnings. Smells like Pipe-cleaner liquid. Video proof attached.
Good night. Long day. (11.30pm and still not dark). Tomorrow, off to the Countryside in the North West.

  • Off to Snaefellsnes

    July 26, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We hit the road to the wilder Iceland. After a stop in Borganes, and visiting the local Saga-Museum (good), we drive to Stykkisholmur, a quaint little port village.

Great landscapes all along the way. Dozens of waterfalls, volcano shaped mountains , endless views. Picnic stop in Gerduberg, some volcanic cliffs half way.Read more

  • Snaefellsnes NP

    July 27, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Long day, exploring the countless views and sites of this little National Park. Really diverse and nice: volcanos, sea, glacier, little villages… Jan does a little early start to a Foss nearby (Svoedufoss), while the rest wakes up. Then the family start with the easy Saxhóll Crater (stairs go up to the crater rim). And we earn the Raudhóll Crater (45min walk - almost nobody there ). No break: Over a bumpy F-road, up to the Hregnassi trailhead. We walk 30min up through lava landscape to the pointy peak. we are lucky: the sun comes out for us. Great views over the volcano craters below and the sea …

Since we are sooooo desperate for salad (after sandwiches and pizza and hotdogs last days), we shop a 10EUR (!) salad, some tomatos , cucumber, Feta , etc for dinner - on the way in a tiny village shop. Just a quick stop for a lunch picnic (sandwich!) at a nice beach near Olavsvik, and onwards .

Afternoon program: The Ytri Tunga seal beach (cool to see these lazy folks lying around on the rocks), the Budir black church (cute), and a coffee / ice cream 🍦 stop in Arnarstapi. From here we also have great view on the Snelfellnesjokul (glacier) that was covered in clouds until now.

A few more stops on the way to look at the super coast views (black beach, rock formations …. and so on). Watching the ESP ENG euro final Penalty shoot out on this cool beach 🏝️… on a iPhone screen. #RealFans

Home for (salad) dinner and tired 🥱… in the hostel , we see a nice movie ("The Home Game") about the local football team Reynir FC (yes! Really entertaining good movie. Fun to watch . No idea why they do not put it on YouTube)

  • Moving to the North

    July 28, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Departure from Snaefellness, direction “the North”. A driving day.
Before hitting the 350km road, we make a short stop at a small beach near the hostel, as well as the famous Renir FC football field (“The Home Game”) . Decision is made to take the coastal road (gravel) - instead of the standard route: good choice. Really nice landscapes along the ocean. Not much traffic, just the sheep-jams (see picture).

Since not many highlight seem to be on the way, we turn off at the Shark-Museum . Another good choice . An active farm that produces “hákarl”, the fermented Greenland shark - Iceland delicacy. They explain the story, the production process - and offer the tasting of this ammonia-dish 😱🤢😷. This one tastes (smells). a little less extreme than the one in Reykjavik.

Quick Picnic on a random lake , in the cold wind, then a Visit to Erikstadir - a little authentically rebuilt Viking longhouse (made of turf) with stories about the Viking life. Pas mal. We listen to the stories for an hour and hit the road again.

Onwards…. A bit boring drive through the “Dalir”, a green area between the west Fjord land and the Snaefellnes Peninsula.

We arrive in our small Neat cottage .... and so does, an hour after us , another French family. Double booking 🤣. The booking agency organizes another cottage for us - equally nice . Cooking and relax from this lazy day. Tomorrow, horse riding in the morning, then Trollaskagi peninsula

  • Horses

    July 29, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Lucky people get lucky weather! 😀no rain for our horse riding day !! Yippie.

We do a 2 hour backland tour , just the 4 of us plus Muriel, the Swiss guide.

Maya and Lou, the expert riders , can’t wait to get into the saddles! AC did ride 15+ years ago, and cowboy Jan has last been riding at the age of 6 on a pony in an amusement park. 😆. Let’s try it out…

Amazing experience. Muriel is great, the Islandic horses so cute and easy. We walk through rough terrain, up and down, including gallop and the islanders-horse-only way to walk: the Tölt. Fun fun.

    July 30, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We stop in Akureyri - Iceland`s 2nd biggest town (!) - which doesn't mean much. It is quite unspectacular - and flooded with Cruise tourists. We dot stay long. On the way , we turn off the main road to Hjalteyri - another former Hering fish processing harbor village. Now and ddd place, with some ghost-town charm ....Read more

  • North of Husavik - Puffins & Lava

    July 30, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Since we arrive rather early in Husavik, we drive a bit further North- We read in some forum, that there is a good Puffin watching spot. And we find them, these sweet little birds. Sitting in a cliff over the ocean...

We also pass by two other sights: the Asbyrgi canyon (not very impressive( and the Hljodaklettar river gorge. This one is better: quite strange lava basalt rocks, and a wild river running through it.

  • Whales!!!!

    July 30, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Late night whale watching trip in a speed boat. (9.30-11.30pm). Perfect weather: flat sea, a bit of sun, no rain. A wonderful experience. First a look at a puffin rock in the sea, with 1000s of Puffins on it. Crazy busy. And then the main act: Whales. We were very lucky . 😀😍 🐳 several humpbacks , right next to the boat. Could almost touch them . So much better than the Canada attempt from 2023. We enjoy every minute.... and come home almost in the dark, just before midnight. Amazing end of the dayRead more

  • Seydisfjordur

    August 1, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We were supposed to spend the night in this sweet little Fjord harbour (the only international ferry - from Denmark) arrives here. And it is known from the Walter Mitty movie. We have sushi, enjoy the sunny evening on a terrace, buy some food - and drive on to our backup stay. Why? something didn't work with the booking (oops) and AC found us a emergency stay in the Fjord next door. Just an hour drive...Read more

  • Möifjördur - end of the world

    August 1, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We stay overnight in this tiny village …. In a very remote fjord. (Hotel in Seydisfjordur was cancelled . This is our lucky alternative).

After 45min drive over a piste through unbelievably beautiful mountains, with 100s of vossen (waterfalls) we end up in our simple guesthouse

After dinner , Jan “goes out to look for whales “…. And a Minkwhale swims along in front of the hostel !!!!! After calling out the crew , the whale JUMPS right in front of us, 20m from the shore . Crazyyyyyyy. 😍😁. We see it appearing a few more time, then it says good bye

  • Fjord-Drive

    August 2, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Nice drive along the East-Fjords. There is not much, except the ocean and the mountains. Endless turns and views . No whale today :-(

AC decided to swim : in 6C Arctic Ocean waters . Brrrr . We stay in a nice cosy mini house (Berunes), and treat ourselves to their restaurant . (After yesterday’s instant noodle soup)Read more

  • Berunestindur

    August 3, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Jan decides to hike up the mountain behind the hostel . Great idea - storm and fog up there . Almost sunny at the coast … interesting how fast the weather conditions change , going up a few hundred meters. Without GPS track , I would have got lost up there.... no path, just wet lava ricks and grassy surfaces. I never saw the summit back below. Must be great in sunshine.Read more

  • Djupivogur - nice fisher village

    August 3, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

Just a turn off the main road - and we end up in this nice little
Village. A “cittaslow” village (google it). Feels nice here … a mix of artists, nature, fishing, tourists …

The eggs 🥚 are a local highlight, as well as “the tank” (see video) - very funny idea. Old liquid silo, now a sound cage.

We also see the NG Explorer . Budget cruise ship, sailing from pole to pole. A week onboard , just 7-10,000 USD. Maya asks when we will do that …. 🤪

We eat a nice lunch in Pakkhuset- and move on, direction Höfn.

  • “Driving around” views

    August 3, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

A super nice stretch of Iceland coast. Driving is fun! Just looking at the landscapes passing by is worth it . Steep mountains, endless Ocean, green fields, rivers… and black beaches (we stop at one, walking into the ice cold sea. It hurts!)

And the best of all- Iceland somehow never has traffic , not to speak of traffic jams.
