• A Proper British Dinner

    July 18 in England ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

After more than a full day of walking across London, I finally returned to the hotel to freshen up for the evening.

There was only one thing left on today’s agenda.

    A proper British pub dinner.

Conveniently, The Bayswater Arms was located almost right next door.

    Perfect.

As I walked in, the server greeted me with a warning.

“The kitchen is running about an hour behind.”

Normally that might have sent me looking elsewhere.

    But honestly…

After walking all day, I wasn’t in any rush. I had nowhere else to be, and an hour in a British pub with a good drink sounded like a perfectly acceptable way to end the day.

I ordered a hazy pale ale with lovely notes of peach, settled into my seat and prepared for the wait.

Which turned out to be completely unnecessary.

Barely twenty minutes later, my dinner arrived.

    Steak and ale pie.

    Golden chips.

    Garden peas.

    Rich gravy.

    Comfort food at its finest.

It was exactly the kind of meal I had hoped to have before leaving London.

As I finished the last bite, I looked back on the day.

    Notting Hill.

    Historic London.

    Coffee shops.

    Street art.

    Markets.

    Harry Potter.

    Tower Bridge.

A bunny and a wolf posing for photos in a medieval church ruin.

Somehow, it had all fit into a single day.

With very happy feet—and a backpack now noticeably heavier thanks to an alarming number of bags of coffee beans—I headed back to the hotel for one final night’s sleep before the next adventure awaited.
