Coffee in a Crypt

Only a few minutes from Leicester Square, I stumbled across one of London’s more unusual cafés.

Or at least, that’s what I thought.

Beneath St Martin-in-the-Fields Church lies the famous Café in the Crypt.

Now, having lunch in a crypt definitely sounded like one of those uniquely British experiences I couldn’t pass up.

Walking downstairs, the setting was certainly impressive.

The vaulted brick ceilings, old stonework and long communal tables created a wonderfully atmospheric space.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite what I had imagined.

Rather than the cosy café I had pictured, it felt much more like a self-service cafeteria.

Since I wasn’t hungry yet, I decided not to stay.

Instead, I wandered around for a few minutes, took a couple of photos and continued on my way.

Not every stop has to become a meal.
