  • Plitvice Lakes

Checked out of the flat in Ljubljana. Met our driver for the trip to Split. On the way we stopped at Plitvice Lakes for a couple of hours. Beautiful waterfalls and rapids.

We took only a portion of the shortest walk through the park due to time constraints. Some walks take ~6 hours.

  • Split

In Split. Staying at a small hotel in the old city. In fact some walls of the hotel are the ancient walls of Diocletian's Palace. That is common within the old city - most if not all of the establishments here are commingled with the old walls.

Mostly we walked around the old city, ate and drank and took it easy.

  • To Dubrovnik

Private car and driver to Dubrovnik. Mostly uneventful drive. First half was freeway through mostly rural, inland areas with few habitations. Second half was closer to the coastline and less rural. We stopped at a little roadside wine and fruit stand run by a local winery.

Our driver, Goran runs his own little transportation business with a couple of employees. While driving, he received a call from a somewhat frantic young Brit woman trying to locate her airport pickup. Phone calls ensue. Long story short, she was 3 feet from her driver, but somehow was unable to see the sign with her name that he was holding up. I wonder how well her trip will go.

Got into Dubrovnik and our apartment which is lovely with a nice outdoor patio. 3 minute walk to the old town gate. Stores and services nearby.

The old town is quite a mix of the old fortress and more modern elements such as retail, restaurants and residential. This seems fairly typical of the approach to these old cities in the part of the world. More on the old town in the next section.

  • Dubrovnik Old Town

Explored the old town of Dubrovnik. Walked the wall surrounding the town - about 1.5 miles with lots of steps. We started around 8:30 to avoid some of the crowds and heat. But it was still quite warm. Can't imagine what it would be like if it were more crowded. Lots of places there is barely room to pass another person. Smartly, they insist on a one way clockwise walk. Would be disastrous if people were walking both ways. Several little cafés along the way to stop for refreshments.

Clear evidence that the old town is inhabited with residents - laundry drying on the line.

  • Montenegro Lunch

On the way back, we stopped for lunch at the Catovica Mlini restaurant. Lovely place with a stream flowing through the outdoor area. We were in a vine covered domed gazebo. The service was impeccable, the food very good and the setting was simply charming. I started with a fish pate, which i had never heard of, and moved on to octopus fried in corn meal. Gail started with a cheese plate and moved on to a salad with baby shrimp and kiwi. I just had to write about it separately.

  • Montenegro

We hired a car and driver/guide and went off to Montenegro to see the Bay of Kotor, the Kotor old town and Perast.

Montenegro is not in the EU, so we did have to go through border crossings, but they were just a minor delay. Oddly, you have to through both Croatian and Montenegran checkpoints in both directions.

The bay is stunning, although the cruise ships detract from it somewhat. Perast is a charming little town nestled between the bay and the mountains.

Old town Kotor is somewhat like old town Dubrovnik, but much smaller.

  • On to Budapest

Most of a day traveling from Dubrovnik to Budapest through Warsaw on Lot Airlines. Unfortunately, 2 of our 3 checked bags didn't arrive. Good news is that the bag with most of the clothes we need for the cruise arrived. Bad news is that the missing bags have all our toiletries, also jewelry, my cashmere sport coat, . . . We'll see when/if they get here. Hotel tonight, but cruise ship tomorrow.

  • Budapest

As we were checking out of the hotel, we learned that today was a major celebration of Harley Davidson motorcycles, and there was a major parade of them scheduled that morning. Made us wonder if we would be stuck in a taxi trying to cross the parade route.

Once we got to the ship and checked in, we went out to buy toiletries in case our luggage didn't get found and delivered. On the way, we walked along a few blocks of the HD parade route - very noisy from all the bikes.

After a number of phone calls and emails, I was able to determine that our luggage was en route to Vienna, but was able to redirect it back to the ship in Budapest.

Kate and Kyle arrived late afternoon. We had dinner and then went on a night bus tour of Budapest. The tour was pretty lackluster, but we were pleased to find our 2 missing bags in our room when we returned.

  • Vienna 2

A free day in Vienna. Went to the local market and a museum of furniture - mostly about the Hapsburghs. Was overcast and a bit rainy, but also cooler which was nice. Gail and Kate got sucked into an olive/cheese/sausage vendor's shop and ended up purchasing 375 euros of food. Hope it doesn't all get confiscated by customs when we go back home.

Kate, Kyle and Gail went off to a classical music concert for the evening.

  • Passau Again

We left Passau headed for Regensburg, our last stop. Or so we thought. After going through another lock that took a very long time, we headed upstream for an hour or so. Then we stopped and turned around.

At a "disembarkation meeting" later that night we learned that the water level was too low for us to proceed and that we were headed back to near Passau. Bummer, but this is late June. Doesn't bode well for July and August cruises.

Our options were: take a 1.5 hour bus ride to Regensburg (and of course another 1.5 hours back), take similar bus ride to Munich or to hang out in Passau for another day. We chose the latter.

Went to the local cathedral for a 30 minute organ recital. We had been told the day before that the cathedral has 5 organs with 18,000(?) pipes and bells. Supposedly the world's largest.

  • On to Prague

Left the boat and met our driver, Milan, for the 3 hour drive to Prague. As we crossed the border from Germany into Czech Republic, the terrain got more hilly and it seemed like it became more rural. Went through a half hour plus of quite a lot of curvy, hilly roads. Eventually flattened and straightened out.

Vladimir let us into the flat. Old guy who is a neighbor and basically speaks no English. Of course we speak no Czech. All worked out and the flat is lovely.

Walked around, had a late lunch right by the astronomical clock. Prague is amazing. So many old buildings with interesting architecture. Lots of pedestrian only areas. Many tube cake shops, candy shops, jewelry, souvenirs, restaurants and coffee shops, and rubber duck shops. Apparently rubber ducks are sort of like beanie babies were at one time.
