• The elephants of Mole National Park

    January 4 in Ghana ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Another surprise! This national park wasn't on our itinerary. It's in the north of Ghana, not far from the border of Burkino Faso.

It took long, rough, uncomfortable travel days to get here. It's so hot, living without air conditioning and sitting in the sun is horrible. 🤮

I had fairly low expectations. I've travelled East Africa and throughout Asia, so I've seen many elephants. So I thought we'd see 1 or 2 elephants from a distance. It was fun just going in a dodgy safari vehicle!

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see so many up close while on foot. Other game drives, you need to stay in the vehicle as there are lions, tigers, or other dangerous animals around. Not here. And, as this park is so difficult to reach, there aren't many other tourists.

I was with an awesome group. Many of them have extensively travelled, and none had been this close to wild elephants before. We had such a great time, so we booked another game drive together. We are known as the Elephant Huggers. 🤣

This was an awesome birthday present for me!

    * On this side trip, we also visited a hippo sanctuary, I'll do another post on this.
