(Ursula) The early morning was refreshing. Shortly after 6 AM, the first sun rays appeared, and a horse was grazing near our campers. We planned to be on the road early today, but the men were still under the hood, working on our carburetor.

Although it was probably a lovely city, we had no desire to stay in Medellin, and finally left after lunch. We passed a mix of new and older buildings, and of course, several slums on the outskirts of the city. The location of Medellín, in this high valley, was quite picturesque, with snow-capped volcanoes in the background.

Today, the Panamericana leads us again over mountainous terrain. As evening approached, Ellen grew impatient to find a place to camp for the night, and we finally settled in at a friendly Hacienda shortly after San Matías, Valdivia.
