Longhorn Cavern State Park

The drive with Mike and Aubra in Mike’s Lexus was smooth and comfortable, thanks to light-moving traffic. We met up with the rest of the group—Jim, Robert, Curt, Wolf, and Bobby—at the Warehouse BBQ and Meetery in Burnet, TX. As always, I went for the pork baby back spare ribs, and they did not disappoint.

With our appetites satisfied, we headed to Longhorn Cavern State Park. Aubra, our leader and organizer, signed us up for a 90-minute guided tour. The limestone caves, located 45-60 feet underground, were formed by the erosion of an ancient underground river that dried up thousands of years ago. Our guide was knowledgeable but spoke too quickly for us geezers to keep up with everything she was saying. However, with a bit of imagination, we enjoyed spotting interesting rock formations, such as one resembling a dog’s head. The temperature in the caverns was a pleasant 65°F, and we spotted a few sleeping bats.

For the night, we stayed at the Best Western hotel in Burnet. After checking in, we all gathered by the pool for drinks, snacks, and “an important planning meeting.” Coming from diverse backgrounds, we had a great time swapping stories and jokes.
