  • Longhorn Cavern State Park

    October 20, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

The drive with Mike and Aubra in Mike’s Lexus was smooth and comfortable, thanks to light-moving traffic. We met up with the rest of the group—Jim, Robert, Curt, Wolf, and Bobby—at the Warehouse BBQ and Meetery in Burnet, TX. As always, I went for the pork baby back spare ribs, and they did not disappoint.

With our appetites satisfied, we headed to Longhorn Cavern State Park. Aubra, our leader and organizer, signed us up for a 90-minute guided tour. The limestone caves, located 45-60 feet underground, were formed by the erosion of an ancient underground river that dried up thousands of years ago. Our guide was knowledgeable but spoke too quickly for us geezers to keep up with everything she was saying. However, with a bit of imagination, we enjoyed spotting interesting rock formations, such as one resembling a dog’s head. The temperature in the caverns was a pleasant 65°F, and we spotted a few sleeping bats.

For the night, we stayed at the Best Western hotel in Burnet. After checking in, we all gathered by the pool for drinks, snacks, and “an important planning meeting.” Coming from diverse backgrounds, we had a great time swapping stories and jokes. Dinner was at Mama’s Home Cooking, just a short walk away. My catfish with coleslaw and fries, paired with a Ziegenbock beer, made for a great end to the day!

  • Hiking in Inks Lake State Park

    October 21, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

We woke up to a beautiful, sunny day.

Unfortunately, Wolf and Jim both had leg issues and decided to skip the morning hike, so we said our goodbyes to them. Inks Lake State Park was just a 20-minute drive from our hotel.

The trail we chose was stunning, winding up and down over rocky terrain with brush, plenty of cacti sporting red fruit, and occasional glimpses of the blue waters of Inks Lake. After about 2.5 miles, we realized we were moving slower than expected and wouldn’t finish the loop in time for our planned 1:00 PM lunch. So, we took a shortcut along a path under the power lines down to Inks Lake and then made our way back to our parked cars via the paved State Park road.

Lunch was just a few miles away at Reverend Jim’s Dam Pub, a popular spot for Harley riders. From our table, we had a great view of the Colorado River below and Buchanan Lake Dam in the distance.

All in all, it was another fantastic outing with my geezer group.
