    From 2D to 1C

    I går, Förenta staterna ☀️ 81 °F

Nothing particularly exciting to report today, as our main task was moving from apartment 2D to 1C. Like our previous apartment, it is on the top floor and boasts an exceptional view, with the bonus of a little more shade on the balcony during the afternoon.

Once again, we spent a few relaxing hours on the beach, soaking up the sunshine, enjoying the crystal clear waters of the Gulf, and chatting with our Canadian friends. Time seemed to fly by, and before we knew it, it was time to head out for an early dinner at Doc Ford's Bar & Grill. Ursula's crab cakes and my generous slab of baby back pork ribs were both delicious.

We rounded off the evening by settling down to watch the latest "Cosy Road" video from Anina and Jeremy. Another lovely way to bring the day to a close!

  • Just a Regular Day

    6 november, Förenta staterna ☀️ 81 °F

Just another regular day on beautiful Sanibel Island!

We started the morning with another leisurely walk around the lighthouse point, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful surroundings. Around noon, we headed back to the bicycle rental shop to exchange my bike, which, unfortunately, had nonworking brakes. A little inconvenience, but easily taken care of!

Once again, it was a gorgeous day, with brilliant blue skies and a gentle breeze. One thing we've been noticing is that Sanibel seems much less crowded than usual. Even at our timeshare resort, occupancy appears to be only about one-third of what it normally is.

Apparently, many people sold their timeshares following Hurricane Ian, and prices dropped to rock-bottom levels. Whatever the reason, we're certainly enjoying the benefits. Traffic is much lighter, the roads are more pleasant, and the island has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

We finally got together with our Canadian friends, Pam and David, on the beach to catch up. They're quite fascinating people who share our love of travel. Both are avid sailors and private pilots, so there's never a shortage of interesting stories and adventures to talk about!

After a relaxing soak in the hot tub and a refreshing dip in the pool, we rounded off the evening with delicious grilled steaks and the latest TV news. A little bourbon on the rocks made for a perfect finishing touch and, hopefully, a good night's snooze.

Life on Sanibel is pretty sweet!

  • Walk around Cape Lighthouse

    5 november, Förenta staterna ☀️ 81 °F

We set out before breakfast and walked around Lighthouse Cape along beautiful Sanibel Beach. The fine white sand felt like a foot massage, although in a few spots we had to put on our Birkenstocks for safety. Quite a few people were already settled into their favorite beach spots, including several fishermen.

At the Cape, a crew was busy building a new pier. Hurricane Ian had destroyed the old one. Beyond the Cape, we spotted a few stranded jellyfish and a bunch of tiny fish that had become an easy meal for all kinds of birds, big and small. It was quite a feeding frenzy!

It was nice to see that the homes along the beach that were still in desperate need of repairs last year have since been restored and look beautiful again.

The sun was already pretty hot, and with hardly any breeze, we worked up quite a sweat. We couldn't wait to get back to our apartment, grab a beach towel, and jump into the cool Gulf water. Water-rat Ursula felt in heaven! We must have stayed in the water for at least 20 minutes, enjoying how clean and clear it was. Schools of tiny fish swam all around us, chased by larger ones. Now and then, one would bump right into us.

After all that activity, another healthy breakfast was just what we needed!

In the afternoon, we drove to the mainland to shop at Publix. We also stopped at Big Daddy Fishmarket, and the freshly grilled Grouper rounded out the evening.

What a life! We are so grateful to be able to enjoy days like this, especially in good health.

  • First Sunny Day

    4 november, Förenta staterna ☀️ 81 °F

Today, we woke up to a beautiful, sunny day with a nice blue sky. This is exactly how I remember Sanibel from our visits in previous years!

It didn’t take much convincing to slip into our swimsuits, grab a couple of towels, and head straight down to the beach. The water was crystal clear and absolutely perfect for swimming. Schools of tiny little fish seemed to be enjoying the water just as much as we were, darting all around us.

After drying off in the warm sunshine for a few minutes, we simply couldn’t resist going back in for a second swim!

I was also mindful of the strong Florida sun and the possibility of getting sunburned, especially since my skin hasn’t had much exposure to the sun yet. The last thing I wanted was to end up with a nasty sunburn that could put a damper on our vacation!

After a nice, healthy lunch, I spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying a little nap and helping a friend back in Switzerland sort out a computer issue.

Meanwhile, Ursula spotted a vibrant green giant lizard crawling through the grass below our balcony. We watched as it eventually disappeared into the underbrush. It’s always fun to encounter a little local wildlife!

And just like that, another beautiful day on Sanibel slipped by. Time really does fly when you’re having fun!

  • REVS Car Museum - Naples

    3 november, Förenta staterna ⛅ 82 °F

A lovely morning greeted us as we headed south to Naples to visit the REVS car museum. The sky was a mix of clouds and sunshine, making for a pleasant start to another day with rain in the forecast.

The REVS Institute, as it is officially called, houses an impressive collection of around 120 classic and historic cars. We were warmly welcomed by our host, Mr. Örtli, who, much to our delight, has Swiss roots. However, he is second-generation and apologized for not speaking our native language.

With a few exceptions, REVS featured a collection of exquisite racing cars, including the world's largest private collection of Porsche racing cars. It is owned by the powerful Collier family, who have long been passionate about car racing and its history. Their enthusiasm is clearly reflected throughout the museum. A fascinating visit, even for someone who isn't necessarily a die-hard car enthusiast. What sets this museum apart is that 90% of the cars are still being periodically maintained and are in running order. The attached photos speak for themselves.

For lunch, we stopped at Spankey’s Speakeasy, a funky and original little place just half a mile away, where we enjoyed a chicken sandwich. By now, the sky looked angry, and heavy rain started just as we were leaving.

The afternoon was reserved for Ursula's shopping trip to the Miromar Outlets. I wasn't particularly interested in joining, so I decided my job was to stay behind and guard the car. Not a bad deal! A long afternoon nap was the obvious choice, and with the rain pounding on the car roof, I dozed off almost immediately.

A nice rainbow signaled the end of the rain, as we headed to Ft Myers and had dinner at Sweet Melissa’s Restaurant. The diver scallops combo with roasted pineapples and pork belly was outstanding. A very enjoyable meal, rounded off with a Sambucca, and a pleasant end to this excursion.

Back home, we briefly followed the early results of the US midterm elections on TV. The first results suggested that the Democrats were making gains and could win back a number of seats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Of course, it was still early, and plenty of votes remained to be counted.

All in all, we are calling vacation day number three, another success!

Tomorrow, we are looking forward to a video call with Anina and Jeremy. They are currently traveling through Delaware in their camper van and are planning to join us here toward the end of next week for a two-week stay. Something nice to look forward to!

  • Rain, Rain, Rain ...

    2 november, Förenta staterna ☁️ 77 °F

It had rained overnight, and the forecast for today wasn't particularly encouraging, with a 90% chance of more rain. There was, however, a brief dry spell early in the morning, which Ursula wisely took advantage of with a walk along the beach. I stayed behind and used the time to catch up on a few computer-related things. Everyone had their priorities!

As luck would have it, the rain started again almost as soon as Ursula returned, and we sat down for breakfast. Not exactly ideal weather for an island where so much revolves around beaches, bicycling, and other outdoor activities. But we weren't going to let a little rain dictate our vacation.

We made a quick trip to Jerry's Food Market to pick up a few necessities and, more importantly, a bottle of Chardonnay to complement tonight's fish dinner. Back at the resort, I settled in for a long afternoon nap while Ursula followed the latest midterm election news. From what we're seeing, the Republicans may have quite a challenge ahead of them in holding on to their majorities in both the House and the Senate. At least something was happening besides the weather!

The nicest surprise came toward the end of the day. Just as the sun was setting, the rain finally stopped, giving me the perfect window to fire up the grill. And then came an unexpected bonus. As I stood at the grill station, I looked up and spotted a beautiful rainbow stretching over our resort. After a day of gray skies and rain, it was a welcome sight. Mother Nature was apparently making an effort to impress me with her beauty!

The Black Grouper turned out fantastic, and the Chardonnay was a perfect companion. Later, we had a video call with Ursula's brother, Wally, which was a nice treat to end the day.

Tomorrow looks like it could bring more of the same rainy weather, so we bought tickets to visit a vintage race-car museum in Naples and will probably stop at the shopping mall in Estero before dinner at Sweet Melissa on our way back. Melissa is one of our favorite restaurants, and the food is exquisite 😋.

  • Farmer's Market

    1 november, Förenta staterna 🌧 75 °F

We noticed that it had rained overnight, and the weather forecast was calling for more rain around noon. It had been a quiet night, although an ache in my left hip interrupted my sleep several times.

But what a great sight to wake up to! Looking out from the balcony, we watched the sun rise and gradually light up the clouds and sky. The fresh smell of the beach air, still carrying that lovely scent after the overnight rain. A beautiful way to start the day!

After coffee, we took advantage of the dry weather and headed to the colourful Sanibel Farmers Market. Most of the vendors we remembered from previous years were still there: the guy selling Polish sausages, the straw-hat lady, the German baker and his family, the Mexican fruit and vegetable vendors, the cheese lady, the seafood stand, and many more.

The relaxed atmosphere at this market is something we always enjoy. There is no need to rush, and it is nice to see so many different faces and stalls again. By the time our two shopping bags were getting heavy, we decided it was time to head back to the condo.

We enjoyed a tasty breakfast of fresh bread, Morbier cheese, and grapes. Nothing fancy, but just right!

As forecast, the rain started promptly at noon. Ursula used the rainy afternoon to unpack and put away our market purchases in the kitchen, while I miraculously managed to get Apple CarPlay working in our Corolla Hybrid.

I spent the rest of the afternoon taking a nap and catching up via WhatsApp with our Ontario friends, Pam & David, who are also staying here at the resort.

After the rain stopped, we went to check out the resort's new renovations and take a walk along the clean, sandy beach. Several kitesurfers were zipping back and forth across the water with their colourful parachutes. The water temperature was inviting enough for a swim, but the wind had picked up considerably, creating waves of about two to three feet.

After our brief curiosity tour, we returned to our third-floor condo, where Chef Ursula prepared a delicious Thai salad and seafood plate for dinner.

What a great feeling to know that we have another three weeks of this relaxed beach life ahead of us!

  • Arrival Day

    31 oktober, Förenta staterna ☀️ 82 °F

The flight to Fort Myers was bumpy from start to finish, with turbulence so persistent that the flight crew wasn't even able to serve drinks or snacks. Needless to say, it wasn't the most relaxing start to our trip. But the pilot landed us safely on the ground in Ft Myers.

After a one-hour ordeal dealing with the Turo car rental, we were finally on our way to Sanibel. Naturally, we made a pit stop at Costco along the way to stock up on groceries. Shopping options on the island are fairly limited, and prices tend to be considerably higher, so it made sense to get most of what we needed before arriving.

We reached the island just before 5:00 PM. Crystal, at the resort office, greeted us with a big smile and a rather amusing Halloween costume that immediately put us in the holiday spirit.

Our first impression of Sanibel was simply WOW! The island looked incredibly lush and green, with beautiful vegetation seemingly flourishing everywhere. It was wonderful to see how much nature had recovered and grown back following the devastation of Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Our timeshare resort also made a great impression. The renovated units and fresh new landscaping gave the property a beautiful, welcoming appearance.

We settled in fairly quickly, and before we knew it, our arrival day was winding down. We kept dinner simple with some delicious boiled shrimp and spent the evening relaxing in front of the TV, catching up on the latest election news. After a bumpy flight, a frustrating car rental experience, and a grocery stop, it felt good to finally be settled in and enjoying our first evening on the island. 🏝️👍

Of course, our thoughts were also with Andreas and Nichole, who were getting married on this very (Halloween) day. We were so sorry to have to miss their wedding and wished we could have been there to share in their happiness. We sent them lots of love and warm wishes for a lifetime of happiness together.
