• Ho Chi Minh / Saigon

    4 Mac, Vietnam ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Just arrived in Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh but people seem to call it Saigon). Arrived after a not too unpleasant night bus (had much worse) and a not too unpleasant border crossing (had much worse). Booked onto a tunnel tour tomorrow. Busy city. But nothing compared to India - India immunises you against everything else that can be experienced I think. Welcome to Vietnam - me love you longtime 😂

Arrived in Saigon after the night bus from Siem Reap with Karl. Officially Ho Chi Minh but the locals call it Saigon as they feel the name is a northern imposition. Good to see that it’s not just the UK that has a north-south divide. Very friendly and social hostel which organised a pub crawl every other night - tonight being one - so despite not drinking went along with the crowd and befriended a small english group - Naomi, Harry and Lucy - as well as some others. Interesting to see how they used free drinks as a way of getting people to spend more and more cash the drunker they got. Selling Budwiesers, the worst of beers - for about 180,000 Dong (about £6) by the end of the evening. And people were apparently paying it! You can get a beer here normally for about 3000D (maybe 50p).
