  • Marceio, Brazil

    March 9, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Our day turned out to be quite different than was planned. Originally going to explore on our own, to a tour with Oceania. Friends decided they wanted to spend day on board, so they offered us their excursion. Maybe they made the right choice. We took a caterman to supposedly one of the top 10 beaches in Brazil. I don't think so. We did enjoy the boat ride and the company. Last stop was the lace village. Early evening as tomorrow will be another tour with DoBrazilRight.Read more

  • RECIFE, BRAZIL

    March 11, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

This was a return visit to Recife. The tour we booked was excellent with new sites we visited. There are over 50 bridges found in Recife and referred to as Brazilian Venice. We stopped by Boa Viagem beach for photos. The apartments across from the beach are interesting as each floor is a single unit. Some units include 2 or 3 floors and can be about 10,000 feet. We continued on to Bom Jesus Street with many historical buildings. Visited a display of the big heads at the Embassy of Giant Dolls. These are worn during the Carnival in Recife. The weight of one these heads can be up to 120 lbs and usually worn by young 18-19 year olds.
A stop at the Jewish Synagogue. And then the Pernabusco Embassy for more local folklore. Our next stop was the Governers Palace. The grounds around the place had an amazing giant Baibab tree. It was so big it would take 11 people to encircle it. The tree was approximately 300 yrs old On to the old jailhouse that is now a market.
Final tour was of UNESCO site of Orlinda. Provided great views of Recife. And a visit to The Se Cathedral and Saint Benedict Monastery.

  • FORTALEZA, Brazil

    March 12, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

What a change since our first visit here. The city itself is just another modern city of Brazil but still has retaining historic areas. Visited Meireles Beach, where a triathlon was in progress. Since it was Sunday, it was a quiet day and made getting around the city easier. Only disadvantage was that most places were closed. A stop at Metroplitan Cathedral which was designed after the cathedral in Cologne, Germany. Cathedral holds 5,000 people.
    From
to the Central Market and on to the Teatro Jose de Alencer Theatre.
Finally, we reached a part of Fortaleza that we remembered, the fish market and beach. One more stop at Croco Beach and then returned to the ship.

  • CAPE VERDE

    March 16, 2023 in Cape Verde ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

So far, my favorite port. A change from the big cities of Brazil. We did a walking tour that gave us an over all flavor of the city of Sao Vicente, Mindelo. Really no beaches in the city center except for a small one the fisherman use. We were told that today was a good catch for the fisherman. Usually, you can only get fish in the market, but today, the fish was being sold on the streets. The cultural center was first used as a storage for coal. Now includes a theatre and local handcraft exhibition. Just like Brazil, they have a carnival. Picture of the sail boat below shows that this is what is worn in the parade instead of the big heads.
All the islands are barren, but do offer pristine beaches. It was settled by the Portugese. Now the Porto Grande Bay is stopping off point for sail boats, etc. crossing the Atlantic. At one time, it was s a base for slave warehouses. Also, the start of where hurricanes begin.

  • DAKAR, Sengal

    March 18, 2023 in Senegal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today's tour guide, Pape, has been working in tourism for 30+ years. He is used for high-profile tours, like Bill Clinton, etc. He also said he did a private tour for Bono and family. Needless to say, he was informative and entertaining.
Our tour was to Goree Island, where the slaves left for Brazil, Caribbean Islands, America etc. You can't begin to believe how the slaves were treated before leaving the country. The men had to weigh at least 120 lbs so they would survive the boat trip. They were feed palm oil and beans to gain weight. Could only relieve themselves once a day. Would be shackled with a 10 lb ball, so if they tried to jump in the ocean, they would not make it out. The Island had 28 houses, holding 200 slaves each. Slaves were auctioned off.
I asked our guide if the slaves would have had the same opportunities if they had stayed in Sengal. His answer was an emphatic no. He has a relative who is a professor at Harvard. If his ancestors had stayed in Sengal, he would not have had that chance. So, in away it is a double-edged sword, but still the whole thing is sad be on words. The other houses on the island depicted by color were used by the British (yellow), French (white), Portugese &Dutch (pink). Very colorful streets.
On a happier note, we were introduced to the mayor of Goree, who is also VP of Sengal Soccer Association. Had interaction with school students who were visiting the Island as part of their education. The Island has an all girls boarding school with 1000 students ages 11-18. Goree Island has a population of 1,800 and is abt .11 sq miles. 52 % of the Sengals population is made up of woman. 94% of Sengal is Muslim. Children between the ages of 5-10 yrs have to learn 6,666 verses of the quran. As you know, Gary is not a shopper except when on vacation. He enjoys bartering for things we probably don't need. Anyway, he decided that he didn't want to appear to have too much cash, so he put 2 $5 bills in his pants pocket. As he was walking, he pulled his cell out and also dropped the money. He took a quick look but couldn't find it. Abt 15 minutes later a fellow he was bartering with came up to us and asked if he had lost the money. 2 boys found it and turned it over to an adult, and in turn, he came looking for us. Needless to say Gary felt obligated to buy. You are always warned in these countries to be aware. Gives you some faith in this world. Also in port is a Mercy ship and will be there for 3 months to provide health care.
