Breakdown, Barrels & too much Bundy 🚨

Dieser Tag begann für uns leider nicht besonders gut. Nur wenige Minuten, nachdem wir losgefahren waren, leuchtete erneut die Motorkontrollleuchte auf. Schon am Vortag war das passiert – da konnten wir den Partikelfilter mithilfe eines Tipps noch selbstständig „reinigen“. Doch diesmal war es schlimmer: Der Wagen verlor deutlich an Leistung und schaffte gerade einmal 50 km/h. Sobald es bergauf ging, waren sogar nur noch 10 km/h drin.

Mit eingeschaltetem Warnblinker und gefühlt als rollendes Verkehrshindernis schleppten wir uns bis nach Bundaberg zur uns zugewiesenen Werkstatt. Dort stellte sich heraus, dass ein Schlauch im Motorraum lose war. Zusätzlich entdeckte man ein Ölleck – und offenbar verlieren wir auch irgendwo Kühlwasser. Zumindest konnte der Schlauch vor Ort repariert werden, und wir waren erstmal wieder fahrbereit. Während der Reparatur verschoben wir unsere geplanten Touren in Bundaberg.

Kaum war das Auto wieder einsatzbereit, machten wir uns auf zur ersten Tour des Tages: der berühmten Bundaberg Distillery. Gemeinsam mit einer kleinen Gruppe erkundeten wir das Betriebsgelände und konnten jeden Schritt der Rumproduktion hautnah miterleben. Besonders beeindruckend war das riesige Becken voller Melasse – und ja, wir durften sogar probieren!

Am Ende der Führung wartete das Beste: Zwei Getränke zur Verkostung pro Person. Michael entschied sich klassisch für zwei Rum-Varianten, während Anna den Christmas Rum und den Banana-Toffee-Likör testete. 😋🥃
Zu allem Überfluss bekam Michael noch die beiden Freigetränke eines Mitbesuchers geschenkt – und gönnte sich somit ganze vier Drinks. Dreimal dürft ihr raten, wer danach fahren durfte → natürlich Anna ✨.

Unsere nächste Station war das Bundaberg Barrel. Beim Aussteigen meinte Michael nur grinsend: „Kannst du das sprechen übernehmen? Ich bin leicht angeschwipst.“ 🤣
Gesagt, getan! Während wir auf unsere Führung warteten, schauten wir uns das kleine, aber feine Museum an. Danach durften wir sämtliche alkoholfreie Bundaberg-Getränke durchprobieren – von Ginger Beer bis Tropical Mango war alles dabei.

Übrigens: Die Bundaberg Rum Distillery und das Bundaberg Barrel gehören zu zwei völlig unterschiedlichen Unternehmen – auch wenn sie so ähnlich heißen.

Leider konnten wir nur das kaufen, was wir in den nächsten Tagen noch trinken können. Während die Bundaberg Softdrinks international erhältlich sind, findet man die Rum- und Likörsorten ausschließlich in Australien. Also hieß es: genießen, solange es geht!

#Unfortunately, this day didn't start off very well for us. Just a few minutes after we hit the road, the check engine light came on again. The same thing had happened the day before—but back then, we were able to "clean" the particulate filter ourselves thanks to a helpful tip. This time, however, things were worse: the car had clearly lost power and could barely manage 50 km/h. Going uphill, we were crawling along at just 10 km/h.

With the hazard lights on and basically functioning as a moving traffic obstacle, we dragged ourselves all the way to Bundaberg to get to the workshop we’d been assigned. It turned out that a hose in the engine compartment had come loose. On top of that, we were told there was an oil leak—and apparently, we’re losing coolant somewhere as well. At least the hose was repaired on site, and we were able to drive again, at least for now. While we waited, we had to postpone our planned tours in Bundaberg.

Once the car was back in working order, we headed straight to our first tour of the day: the famous Bundaberg Distillery. Together with a small group, we explored the premises and got to see every step of the rum-making process up close. One of the most impressive parts was the massive molasses tank—and yes, we even got to taste some!

At the end of the tour, the highlight awaited: two drinks per person for tasting. Michael went classic with two types of rum, while Anna opted to try the Christmas Rum and the Banana Toffee Liqueur. 😋🥃
To top it off, Michael was given two extra tokens from another visitor—so he ended up enjoying a total of four drinks. And guess who had to drive afterwards → of course, Anna ✨.

Our next stop was the Bundaberg Barrel. As we got out of the car, Michael grinned and said, “Can you do the talking? I might be a little tipsy.” 🤣
No problem! While waiting for our tour to start, we explored the small but charming museum. Afterwards, we had the chance to sample all kinds of the non-alcoholic Bundaberg drinks—from ginger beer to tropical mango, and everything in between.

Fun fact: The Bundaberg Rum Distillery and The Bundaberg Barrel are two completely separate companies, even though their names are quite similar.

Unfortunately, we could only buy what we’ll realistically be able to drink during the remainder of our stay. While Bundaberg's soft drinks are available internationally, the rum and liqueurs are exclusively sold in Australia—so we’ll enjoy them while we can!Meer informatie
