  • More family time and a haircut

    22 agosto 2019, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

I spent the day seeing my brother whilst Kate had an admin day, shopping and a visit to Truro on the bus immersing herself in more Cornish culture... to which the feedback was quite negative today. Sadly racism, constant negativity and bad customer service didn’t enamour her to the cathedral city of Truro one bit. Luckily she liked her haircut!Leggi altro

  • Shopping for Russia and a v large pasty

    23 agosto 2019, Inghilterra ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    Another beautifully sunny day.
Started the day with a supermarket shop for dried food for the upcoming Russia trip.
Breakfast was an extra large Choak’s pasty!
This was followed by Kate’s last carboot sale at Falmouth rugby club.
We then drove 45 mins to St Austell to finally catch up with my eldest nephew Reece and his girlfriend Amy before a last night’s dinner of fish and chips back in Falmouth.
We r hoping to god that we can stop eating in Russia!!
Tmrw we leave Cornwall for London which will be v sad to leave the family.

  • Cornwall to Camden

    24 agosto 2019, Inghilterra ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Sad farewell to mum and Pete this morning at Truro train station as we caught the 08.37 to Paddington.
Arrived on time after a carriage change due to a hideous, screaming child.
We caught the Hammersmith and City line to Kings Cross/ St Pancreas and walked to our accommodation.
After dropping our bags off we went to the British Library for a quick visit. I love Scott’s diary, opened on the page when he reached the South Pole (a bit late!!) and part of the original Magna Carta.
We then caught the tube up to Camden Lock as Kate has never been. It’s such a cool area of London.
Now back and watching the highlights of England vs Ireland at Twickenham which was played earlier today. Early night tonight.

  • Inside Buckingham Palace

    25 agosto 2019, Inghilterra ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

What a fabulous morning?!! I saw yesterday that Buckingham Palace’s state rooms are open to the public for 10 weeks a year (Queenie needs to fund raise instead of using public coffers for her repairs).
We booked tickets for 11.15am and spent 2 hours inside the fabulous state rooms of Buckingham Palace.
Sadly we couldn’t take photos inside but the rooms and contents were awe inspiring - especially Queen Victoria’s actual throne and the ballroom. All rooms were eye wateringly beautiful and full of gold adornments.
Anyway we thoroughly enjoyed being one of the 8000 daily visitors and finished off with a coffee overlooking the Royal gardens.
We spent the afternoon around Oxford Circus before heading home via Kings Cross/ St Pancreas.

  • Russia we have arrived!!!

    27 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Well Aeroflot/ Rossiya were faultless apart from landing a mere 15 mins late.
No migration card needed and despite nerves we got through immigration without any issues.
We were met by Sergei who looked like a Russian shotputter in a v tight tracksuit who took us to his ‘taxi’ at speed.
A 20 minute rally car race into St P was accompanied with ear splitting techno however we have arrived at our Atlantika Hotel, have checked in and now reading the free maps before getting some needed shut eye.
St P exploration tmrw- v exciting.

  • St Petersburg Hop on/ Hop off boat/bus

    27 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Spent 2 hours on the canals and river of St P with full views of a lot of the sights - The Hermitage, Peter and Paul’s Fortress etc
We then got off the boat, grabbed a coffee and jumped on the bus that took us around the road based sights of St Isaac Cathedral, Catherine the Great statue, church of the saviour on the spilled blood, the obelisk, and the Russian museum. The traffic was pretty manic with Tour buses so we jumped off as went to St Issac CathedralLeggi altro

  • St Issac Cathedral colonnade

    27 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

After jumping off the bus at St Issac Cathedral I had to drag K away from the pumpkin horse drawn carriages- she is such a romantic!!
Instead we got 2 tickets and climbed the 200+ steps to the view point.
We had amazing views over the city but often had to wait whilst Russian’s posed like models for 100 photos before they were satisfied with their insta- worthy pics.
Just to make sure we didn’t stay up there too long they started ringing the bells!!
Down we climbed and finally headed for some food - now 4pm before hitting the Faberge Museum

  • Russian Museum

    28 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

After a breakfast of porridge ( trying to keep energy up for a planned v long day) we set off for a 40 min walk to the train station.
A v lovely ticket lady kindly sorted our train tickets to Moscow for Saturday- the Russians we have met so far har been super helpful and lovely with it- although she did keep our handwritten Russian note kindly written by the girl on reception asking for the correct train!
Tickets in hand we set off for the Russian museum- an entree to the main course planned for later - The Hermitage.
After walking through the cloakroom x 6 we finally enjoyed 2 hours of the most incredible ( or so we thought at the time) Russian art and decorations interspersed with av nice lunch in the cafe. It was less of a museum and more of an art collection which we thoroughly enjoyed.

  • No wonder there were no crowds

    28 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

So after the Russian Museum we thought we would fit in the Saviour of the Spilled Blood.
Walking up to this beautiful structure ( we got over the disappointment yesterday of its main turret being swathed in scaffolding and covered- we had the same issue with the famous Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar!!) we were amazed at the lack of crowds and thought our luck was in..... no it was closed!!
    Back we go tmrw!!

  • The Hermitage - the main course Part 1

    28 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

So we arrived at 4.30pm as it’s late night opening tonight and we discovered the amazing “Peacock clock” gets wound to go off at 8pm just once a week on a Wednesday- bonus.
What to say about The Hermitage that houses possible the world’s best collection of art, porcelain and antiquities amassed firstly by Catherine the Great.
4 hours later we left and still hadn’t seen 1/3 of the main building let alone the other 5 sites!!
It’s just too big and too full of mind blowing art, objects and rooms filled to the brim of eye watering beauty.
Sorry for the following loads of photos!!

  • Saviour on the Spilled Blood - inside

    29 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Had a slightly later breakfast of cheese and tomato on toast before heading out of the door for the Saviour on the Spilled Blood church at 10am.
We had seen the queues of 1000’s ( and the queues of no-one yesterday when it was closed!) so got there early for the 10.30am opening.
We bought our tickets, wrestled with the tour groups that emptied off of their buses like ants ( superior ants who think they have total right of way), and managed to be one of the first ones inside this incredible church.
The fact that it is decorated with 7500 square metres of mosaics makes it quite mind blowing.
Half an hour later and we were done but satisfied.

  • Hop on/off bus and a night out!

    29 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Well after our churchy am we jumped on the “green line” hop on/ off bus to make the most of our 2 day ticket ( which actually lasts 48 hours which is good) and went across to the other side of the River Neva. An hour later saw us wandering around the streets of St P yet explored ( well by us).
Back to the hotel for rest/ planning and then out for a beer and a “ late” dinner to sit and soak up the St P nightlife- well the free bands on every street corner .

  • The Hermitage Day 2 - Part 1

    30 agosto 2019, Russia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Back to the Hermitage it was this am to queue at the automated ticket machine for today’s tickets.
Straight off to the General Staff Building which is opposite the square for more amazing art works.... and a Carl Faberge Memorial Exhibition.
Yesterday we googled the most expensive Faberge Egg ad it was a “ Rothschild Egg” bought for more than £10 million.
What we didn’t realise was that it was housed.... in the Memorial Exhibition!! What a treat that was?!!
After 3.5 hours of Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Gaugin ( about 6-10 works of each at least) and many, many other artists we left for a spot of lunch- well a pint and some chips.... how v cultured??!!!
Tonight it’s back to the main Hermitage for more of what we missed the other night.
