  • The Captain's House

    2023年7月15日, アイルランド ⋅ 🌬 59 °F

We had such a lovely stay here. It was centrally located in Dingle so we could walk basically everywhere in town.
Mary, our host, had fresh eggs from her chickens, juice, milk, yogurt, bread, butter and jam in the kitchen for us.
There were 3 total rooms, all ensuite. It was built in the mid 1800's, and still had a lot of the original parts, such as the wood railing on the staircase.
We loved the living room to relax in.
I think we all agreed we would stay here again.

  • Dingle Sea Safari

    2023年7月16日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

What an adventure! We started the day with a 2.5 hour rib boat ride. They provided waterproof gear, as you do get wet!
Mom was a bit nervous. Cory was excited. Water is his happy place.
We secured front row seats. I actually wasn't going to be my normal pushy self and just sit wherever. But Cory wanted the front. It's where you feel the most on the ride.
We saw bottle nose dolphins right away! Then we went off to the Blasket Islands. The main island was inhabited for hundreds of years. They removed the last inhabitants in 1957. You can stay at a B&B there. But there's zero electricity and you have to walk your happy ass up to the house. Bucket list!
We saw a bunch of grey seals basking in the sun. Quit a few came to say hi.
After this we headed to the Islands that I can't pronounce. And since I can't add more than 20 photos, and I took about 1000, I am going to make that a second post.
Mom made such funny squeals the entire trip. It was so damn funny!
The Cliffs and views were stunning. We drive this peninsula tomorrow. It will be cool to see it from a different perspective.

  • An Island I cannot pronounce

    2023年7月16日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

This part the water was way more intense. The squalls were 13 feet or more. Thank God we had an experienced captain!
The view was so worth it. We went in Black Bay and saw 2 islands that I can't pronounce. But we were at the most westerly point of Ireland.
The Cathedral Rock was magical. I'm agnostic, but I would say that God did something amazing here.
    Getting out was crazy. Crazy.
We saw Atlantic Puffins, even saw one with a fish in it's mouth. And when we went back towards the bay, the captain did a quick about face and turned the boat around fast. He busted ass back the way we came. The reason? The Common Dolphin!
I can't describe the beauty we saw today. Worth every second.
I haven't heard Cory laugh as hard as he did this trip in a long time. And his smile....awesome!

  • Out of the Blue

    2023年7月16日, アイルランド ⋅ 🌬 59 °F

This restaurant was highly rated and you have to make reservations months in advance. The food was great. The service was sub-par. And not that I need to see people dressed fancy, but when you are paying $40 per plate, maybe the waitstaff could wear something different than athletic pants and a sweatshirt. I would say skip!
Please enjoy photos of our food.

  • Dingle Day 2

    2023年7月16日, アイルランド ⋅ 🌬 59 °F

Day 2 was pretty relaxed, well, after the awesome boat ride!
Cory made is breakfast before our trip. Delish as always. The breakfast sausage has a different flavor and texture. Cory doesn't care for it, but Mom and I do. I would describe it as soft and slightly mushy.
After we got back, we made our way back to The Captain's House for lunch. We dined like kings and queens on prosciutto, salami, local cheese, chips, hummus, bread and butter. Have I mentioned how much we love the butter here?
Soon after we all started feeling our eyes get heavy, so we napped. Yep. We napped in Ireland. No regrets. After waking up refreshed, we got dolled up for our early dinner at Out of the Blue.
After dinner, Mom and I were craving an Irish Coffee. Since the big match between Kerry and Derry was on, each pub was so packed, you couldn't walk in. So Cory settled for a local cone from Murphy's Ice Cream. He said it's as good as Tillamook!
Then the match ended and we got into Foxy John's for that Irish Coffee. So dang good!
Then we walked to O'Sullivans because Hannah (my sister-in-law) let us know her dad is friends with the owner and that we should pop in and name drop. Well, we asked and the lad at the pub informed us that we missed Tommy, he left for a tour in the US and would be gone for a month. Damn. Then the lad said, oh too bad you weren't here last night when he played. Ha! Good luck on us as we were sitting first row and enjoyed his talents for about an hour. We even put a 5 Euro in the jar. He smiled and said thank you.
We were tuckered out, even after our nap, and decided to head home. We walked down an alley and enjoyed the cool murals along the way.
We sat around, played 31 and some Rummy, chatted with Aunt Carre, and ended the night with great conversation.
    We walked 8,335 steps.
    5 star day!

  • Hold a lamb and Beehive Huts

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We stopped here to hold a lamb. Awe! So sweet! Till you remember that they are simply raised for meat. Poor lamb. But dang, I do love lamb stew!
When they sheer sheep, they toss, bury or burn the wool. It's that worthless. So all the wool items for sale here are not really Irish. The items for sale are made of merino wool, which are different breeds of sheep than what are here.
The Beehive huts are pre-viking times. They didn't use any mortar to hold the stones. They simply stacked. And they are still standing! The picture of the complete one is a replica. But the others are real. Also, the clans built a tunnel system under the huts to hide from neighboring clans when fighting, to store valuables, store food, and to hide livestock. They tunneled many miles. Crazy cool!

  • Coumeenole Beach

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

This was such a beautiful beach. The water was so pretty. Our driver, Rory, swims here most days with his son. We took our shoes off and walked the beach, feeling the sand beneath our toes. The sun was warm and the breeze was fair. It was a great stop!もっと詳しく

  • Dunquin Pier

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

This used to be an old sheep path. Now it is a path that silly tourists think they can drive on, and then get stuck.
Also, off this Pier is where a Spanish Armada ship sunk.

  • Ionad an Bhlascaoid (museum)

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

This is another OPW site, so we used our Horizon cards for free entry.
The museum is all about the inhabitants of The Blasket Islands. If you recall from yesterday's tour, this is the island that held inhabitants until the 1950's. We saw the grey seals here.
We learned a lot about the life of these people. At its peak, 180 people lived here. They never had electricity. Their life was extremely hard.
I could write and write about all we learned. Instead, I suggest you Google the many books written by authors from the oral storytellers directly. I bought a book at a local bookshop today to learn more.

  • Kruger's Pub

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

We stopped here for lunch. This is the pub that Rory watched the game at and "crawled" the 200 meters home.
Food was decent for pub food. View was excellent! Service was great. You only need to be 14 to work at pubs here.
Fun fact, this is the pub that is known as being the last place to get a beer before New York. It's apparently the closest pub to New York in Ireland. I have not fact checked that.

  • Cosan Chuas na Nae beach

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Another beautiful beach. We drove here after we drove by the location where the fight scene between Luke and Kylo Ren in one of the many, many Star Wars films was filmed. The Last Jedi? Rory actually was one of the hired drivers during the filming. He drove the actor that plays Chewbacca to one of the local schools. Rory said in costume, he was 7 feet 2 inches. They acquired a van to lay him down in. The filming lasted 6 months for 15 minutes of the film. Over 750 staff were here. Crazy!
Also, the architect for the Australian Opera House was said to have been inspired by this same area.
The beach was beautiful as well!

  • Old church

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

The ruins of an old church from 600 B.C.E.
Beautiful! We saw an old sun dial, a Contract Stone (they did marriage agreements by sticking their fingers through the hole and agreeing to bond) written in an old pre-Viking Irish language from the 5th and 9th Century called Ogham (pronounced ohm), and an alphabet stone which taught Latin. These 3 stones are not native to this church. But they werefound on the local villagers property, and simply placed here.
This was also the site of mass graves from the Famine.

  • Nelizan's Bar Dingle

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

We had nasty pizza at this cool local pub. We thought there was going to be dancers...and there was. But not regular dancing. It was Irish Square Dancing kind of. Pretty fun!
Mom and I played cards, and I kicked her ass multiple times.
We watched the guys take down the pool table and move it. Pretty cool!
Edit to add that this is Irish Session Dancing. Each county in Ireland has their own version, and it is taught to all the locals in the pubs. There are festivals where the different counties get together and dance their specific county session dances. What a cool tradition.

  • Dingle Peninsula Tour

    2023年7月17日, アイルランド ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

We took an all day (9:30am to 4pm) tour around Dingle Peninsula today. Our driver's name was Rory, and, we found out, he was a bit hung over. Had "racks" of pints watching the game yesterday. Ha! He is a local who lives in a small village with less than 800 people.
We loved this tour for the simple fact that we got out so often. Rory had lots of information on all the stops as well. I will post pictures here that I can't recall the name of the exact location.
Rory told us the waters are very over fished, which causes a lot of issues. We also had a big laugh about the Americans who identify as cats, and the parents that allow it. Meow.
Rory lived in the states for 11 years because he is a master wood worker and did old wood restoration for The Kennedy's, a Shiek in Kentucky and one of the major churches in New York.
But, as he said, home is home. So he moved back.
His wife's mom was part of the last inhabitants of The Blasket Island.
    A fun day!

Our first stop was The Bridge of Ross. There used to be 3 natural land bridges here. But one collapsed. It was a magnificent area. The rocks, the colors, all the flowers. So beautiful.
Also, the peninsula that was behind us was the closest part of Europe to New York.
We were all speechless here, which is really saying a lot. Simply beautiful. The pictures do not do it justice.

We stopped in Doolin for lunch. Weird experience ordering food. There was some unrest amongst the workers. And our guy was not too knowledgeable on the menu, the beers, or the restaurant in general. At first I thought it was a language barrier. No.
    The food was surprisingly tasty.

Alan stopped and had us bring our water bottles into this small stone enclosure. It was a natural spring full of the "freshest water we will ever taste."
It was very cold and refreshing!
Across the way, there were 2 donkeys! They were way back in their paddock, but came over when we walked to the wall. We happened to have 2 apples, which the donkeys were well pleased to eat.
    One sneezed on me.
    They were so sweet!
