  • Coiba national park

    17. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Somehow it feels like the areas we wanna go to in Panama are much more difficult to reach then anywhere else on the trip. Also it feels like there are not many tourists around here. We have also never heard of someone saying 'Hey I'm gonna go to Panama for holidays!'

After visiting the archipelago of Bocas we left the Caribbean coast and switched again on the western pacific coast to visit the national park and archipelago of Coiba.

And it was really worth it!! While snorkeling we our first hawkbill turtles, a few white tip reef sharks and so many schools of different fish. (And the beaches where also very nice 😉).

Today Jan went diving in the hope to finally see some whale sharks, but again there was non around. Instead more turtles, dozens of white tip reef shark, one or two bull sharks (known for being aggressive) and a whole school of mobula rays. A ray of the same family as the big manta rays, with the special superpower to be able to fly. 😉

(PS: on the left side of the ray picture there's a black shadow -> bull shark)

  • Santa Catalina

    19. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We came to Santa Catalina because of Coiba island and also read before that this place is only meant for people who are looking for exactly this activities as the city beach might not be that attractive (which is true, except for sunset). On our bonus day in Santa Catalina we tried a surfer beach at the other end of the town and found a nice spot to spend the day.Les mer

  • Vulcano City - El Valle de Anton

    21. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

After we left the pacific coast to explore more the country, we arrived in a city which was build in an ancient extinct volcano. According to the www and the locals El Valle is the only town around the world inside the crater of a volcano. Living in the crater means having great views to the crater hills. Together with four other travelers who had same plans we walked up the hill of ‘la india dorminda’ and had a spectacular view over the whole former vulcano.Les mer

  • Sloth Surprise

    21. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Standing on the balcony of our apartment shortly before sunset and seeing this beautiful little friend in the trees 🦥 what a surprise! Since Costa Rica we always watch out to see some sloths in nature. We were lucky already twice but the sloths both were high in a tree. Now this one came so close and was very active climbing in the trees.

Watch until the end (nothing happened to the sloths, it continued climbing on another tree)

  • He finally moved in

    22. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Isn't a sloth cute and with his long arms, his dense and long fur and sweet smile the perfect hugger and cuddler? Today he came back for us and was just 1m away from us.
BUT we know you shouldn't touch wildlife and you DON'T wanna touch a sloth 😅 he has a lot of different insects living in his fur. Butterflies, moth, ....
    Still cute 🦥

  • Mirador Cerro la Gaita

    23. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

After a scenic ride through the jungle and horrible steep climb up the crater walls we finally arrived 'Mirador Cerro La Gaita'. This wonderful view point is one of the highest points at one of the narrowest landforms in Central America. So looking west you can see the close coast of the Pacific ocean. Looking east people say on clear days you can see the Caribbean sea.

After the hike we jumped in our more or less last bus ride. Reaching Panama City today gives us the feeling the end of our trip is near as our flight back home is from Panama City. BUT one of the highlights of our trip still in front of us: 'San Blas archipelago'.

  • Casco Viejo

    24. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

After we spent the last three months in more rural areas or small towns or islands this city now feels even bigger than it probably is.
We have chosen the old town to live and strolled through this beautiful colonial part of the city, next to the Pacific Ocean.Les mer

  • Panama Canal

    25. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

The most famous shortcut in the world 🌎
When walking through casco viejo we could already see big ships in a distance waiting in line to pass the canal.
Today we visited one of the three locks the ships have to pass and we’re lucky as there were two big ships passing Miraflores locks when we came.Les mer

  • Taboga

    27. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

How to escape the city? We opted for the ferry to an island nearby and the beach experience was a special one. Never there were so many ships anchoring (waiting for the canal) in front of “our” beach 🚢😃Les mer

  • San Blas Archipelago

    28. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

Some of the most beautiful places in the world aren't known to people that haven't been in these countries or areas before. Unless there was a movie that was shot there. Our first stop on the San Blas archipelago is 'Pelicano island'. Today people often call it 'Casa de papel island', as one of the opening scenes of the Netflix series 'Casa de papel' was produced here.

Just 5 meters away from the beach a coral reef starts. If it comes to diversity of corals, fish, ... one of the most impressive we have ever snorkeled.

  • Snorkeling with shark 😉

    29. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

At the beginning of our trip 'snorkeling with shark' would be a highlight headline. As it is for many people around us. Yesterday a little shark approached our island and everyone freaked out. For us it already feels like 'daily business', but still nice to see. Most of the day we spend playing beach volleyball, snorkeling the reef of our island or just relaxing in the sun, enjoying one of the last caribbean beaches for this trip.

'After Lunch' at 5pm we changed our island to a bigger but less crowded one. Also with a nice reef 5m of the beach but not as much atmosphere as our previous island.

  • Isla Perro Grande

    30. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

The big dog island is one of the islands you can visit but can't sleep on. This island is surrounded by many others so the water in between the islands is calm and perfect for sailing boats to throw their anchor.

For us it felt weird to see the historical flag of Guna Yala. A Spanish flag with a swastika on it. The swastika should be a symbol for an octopus that according to legend formed the world.

  • Isla Perro chico

    30. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

We decided to give every island a separate post so people that see our footprints and want to go there as well know how the islands look like, because it's really hard to get Infos about the islands in advance.

This is Perro Chicco or the island of the dog. Famous for its sunken ship Infront of the island where you can snorkel and explore a ship wreck starting to get covered by coral reef.

  • Metropolitan Natural Park

    31. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Back in Panama City we still are not into too much sightseeing or city life. So we chose to visit the national park which connects to the city. With the hope to spot some more animals we walked to the top and had a great view over the city and the ocean, plus a little monkey climbing in the trees. On the way we spotted toucans, turtles, a Jesus Christ Lizard and a Nasenbär, all this in a driving distance of 15 minutes from the city centre.

Around the trip Jan has tried many different kinds of Ceviche. With shrimp, conch, octopus, .... So our last stop for lunch was the fish market.

  • Easter procession

    31. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

This morning the whole city around the Cathedral was really crowded. At the evening we heard a brass band close to our apartment and decided to have a look. Yesterday Panama City started the 'Semana Santa' the holy Easter week filled with processions and parties.

We have already seen the statues they carried inside different churches along our travels and always thought 'i don't wanna have to carry that!'. 🤪

  • It's time to say goodbye

    31. mars 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

At the start of the travel we thought 3 months gonna be a long time. But days passed by too quickly so it feels like we just started. Still some of the memories already feel like they have been on a different holiday.

We both know already the questions coming our way:
-> what was the best part of your travel?
    -> which country you recommend?
-> what was the most surprising country?
    -> ......

So we decided to pack it all in one photo:
    Nicaragua and Panama
