  • Parque Nacional Huerquehue

    Nov 22–23, 2023 in Chile ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Spent last night in Huerquehue national park, camping right by a beautiful lake. Did an extremely muddy hike yesterday up to some other lakes and a less muddy today to see a waterfall!

  • Reserva El Cañi

    November 26, 2023 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Went on a long walk up a mountain to see a view of all the volcanoes. Two puppies adopted us on the way and stayed with us for most of the 18km / 1200m gain hike (they were so sleepy by the end they kept falling asleep on the way home)Read more

  • Patagonia road trip part 1/3

    Nov 29–Dec 6, 2023 in Chile ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

I drove 2163 km around northern Patagonia and Chiloé island (next time we'll also insure Sam, that was a lot of driving).
Had some crazy roads/gravel, snow, dust, and luckily some sunshine. We were very proud of our little car which managed every mountain.Read more

    Dec 8–12, 2023 in Chile ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Parque Nacional Cerro Castillo - snuck into a closed hike (we can see why it was closed, but got some fantastic views).
Got a ferry over to Chiloé, Sam got to touch the Pacific Ocean for the first time ever.
Then had to return the car back to Puerto Montt before flying south!

  • Antarctica day 1

    January 7, 2024 in Antarctica ⋅ 🌫 -1 °C

After two days on the Drake Passage arrived in Antarctica.
Morning: Went mountaineering on Cuverville Island.
Afternoon: went on a zodiac (rubber motor boat) tour at Brown station / Paradise Bay.
Evening: camping overnight at Leith Cove, fell asleep to the sound of whales beneath us and woke up to the same! Slightly odd camping out somewhere that never gets dark.

  • Antarctica day 2

    January 8, 2024 in Antarctica ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

Morning: woken up from camping to whales in the bay beneath us.
Had a couple hours rest on the boat heading to Orne Harbour - had a few minutes walking up to a chinstrap colony before the wind blew in a load of ice and we had to clear the landing site asap.
Passed the David Attenborough (aka Boaty McBoatface)
Afternoon: Damoy Point walk, Gentoo penguin rookery.

  • Antarctica day 3

    January 9, 2024 in Antarctica ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Morning: woke up to orcas passing the boat. Drove through Lemaire Channel, a super narrow, beautiful passageway.
Petermann Island - went on land to see Gentoo rookeries, some elephant seals, and some pretty views.
Afternoon: Salpetriere Bay - zodiac cruise around some incredible icebergs (the tower in the 9th picture collapsed near the kayakers causing a 2 m wave). Saw a bunch of seals; leopard, crabeaters, and Weddell. And lots of penguins out having baths.

  • Antarctica day 4

    January 10, 2024 in Antarctica ⋅ ❄️ -1 °C

    Izzy's birthday!
Morning: stopped at Port Lockroy, i.e. the penguin post office and got an Antarctic stamp. Went kayaking in the bay around Port Lockroy.
Afternoon: weather turned bad so we were on route off the Peninsula toward the antarctic sound.
The staff forgot my birthday so the party/BBQ photos are from my fake birthday, the 11th when I got my cake!

  • Antarctica day 5

    January 11, 2024 in Antarctica ⋅ ☀️ 0 °C

Morning: Kopaitic Island zodiac cruise and landing. Got super up close with a bunch of humpbacks. On the landing was a chinstrap rookery.
Afternoon: Kiness cove zodiac cruise, watching an utterly massive adelie rookery from the water. Got a photo of all three major species together (Gentoo, chinstrap, adelie).
Evening: beautiful weather so had the BBQ (photos posted on the 10th).

  • Antarctica day 6

    January 12, 2024 in Antarctica ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

Morning: Brown Bluff landing, another big adelie colony and some cool rock structures. Saw a massive glacier calving (noone got a video sadly).
Afternoon: Hope Bay / Esperanza zodiac cruise. Esperanza is a permanent Argentine base where 80 people live. It has a school / hospital / etc. People are chosen from Patagonia to move there for around a year at a time. We had an unsuspecting penguin jump into the boat, providing much entertainment. Then had the best whale experiences yet - around 1000 penguins swimming all around fishing for krill, with around 20 whales popping up in every direction between them.Read more

  • Antarctica day 7 (last day)

    January 13, 2024 in Antarctica ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Morning: started bright and earlier at Whalers Bay / Port Foster, Deception Island with our polar plunge. We were 3rd and 4th into the water (along with our friend Bernie). Also saw the remains of an old whaling station.
Afternoon: Half Moon Island where we saw a chinstrap colony and some elephant seals. After getting back onto the boat we were rushed back on land again for the incredibly rare sight of an Emperor Penguin which some of the group had spotted!!
Then started back onto the Drake Passage up to Ushuaia.
