Seit vielen Jahren möchte ich gerne nach Mehamn fahren, weil es nochmal eine ganz andere Atmosphäre vom nördlichsten Punkt hat.

Avisiert habe ich Slettnes Fyr, den Leuchtturm am Ende der Straße, nachdem wir heute das Landesinnere durchfahren haben. Eine karge Landschaft, Reste von Rauhreif auf den Rändern der Straße, Tagestemperatur um zehn Grad. Felsen, Steine, Seen, ein bisschen Grün und wiederholt Regen zum kalten Wind.

Verstreut einige Häuser, an einer Kreuzung ein kleiner Ort. Dann sind wir beim Leuchtturm, ein Regenbogen begrüßt uns.

Ich fühle mich seit einigen Tagen nicht wohl, stehe aber mit meinem lieben Doktor in Verbindung. Jetzt kommt noch Fieber hinzu, erhöhte Temperatur, allgemeine Schlappheit.

Über den Besitzer vom Campingplatz nehme ich Kontakt zum Medizinischen Dienst auf, besuche die junge Ärztin und ihre Krankenschwester.

Beide kommen aus dem Süden von Norwegen, arbeiten ein halbes Jahr hier oben, und sind sehr glücklich.

Obwohl es auf einem Breitengrad von 71° N liegt, ist es aufgrund des Einflusses des Golfstroms viel wärmer als andere Gebiete auf demselben Breitengrad. Die Durchschnittstemperatur im Sommer beträgt etwa 11 °C und kann manchmal 24 °C erreichen. Im Winter sinkt die Durchschnittstemperatur auf −4 °C und kann bei starker Kälte auf −16 °C sinken." Ich habe einen bakteriellen Infekt im Urin, bekomme Antibiotika, und eine sehr freundliche Verabschiedung.

Zur Nacht fahren auf einen kleinen Hügel über der Stadt, wo die Sonne herumwandert, und das Hurtigrutenschiff gerade einläuft.

I have wanted to visit Mehamn for many years, as the atmosphere at this northernmost point is truly unique.

I had set my sights on Slettnes Fyr—the lighthouse at the end of the road—after driving through the interior today. It was a barren landscape: traces of frost along the roadside, daytime temperatures hovering around ten degrees. Rocks, stones, lakes, a touch of greenery, and intermittent rain accompanying the cold wind.

A few scattered houses, a small settlement at a crossroads. Then we arrive at the lighthouse; a rainbow greets us.

I haven't been feeling well for a few days, though I’ve been in touch with my doctor back home. Now a fever has set in—elevated temperature and general lethargy.

Through the campsite owner, I get in touch with the local medical service and visit the young doctor and her nurse.

Both are from southern Norway; they work up here for six months at a time and are very happy.

I am diagnosed with a bacterial urinary tract infection, prescribed antibiotics, and given a very friendly send-off.

For the night, we drive up a small hill overlooking the town, where the sun circles overhead and the Hurtigruten ship is just pulling into port.Read more
