    San Pedro

    I walked up to Bella Vista cafe for a traditional breakfast with a view. It was unfortunately a bit cloudy so you couldn’t see the top of the volcano.
    I caught a shuttle bus to San Pedro which was delayed by road works and a petition which left us waiting for an hour. The road after was really bad and so in total it took six hours to get to San Pedro. A girl I sat next to on the bus walked me part the way to the hostel. Once in the hostel I met a group of UK friends and a Canadian girl traveling. I walked with them into town and we found a vegetarian restaurant with a stunning view over the lake. I ate a delicious tempeh stir fry which was loaded with veggies. After we stopped in at another hostel where drinks for ladies night were only Q5 or about $1! We walked back and went to bed early as we signed up for a big walk at sunrise.Leggi altro

    Climbing Indians Nose and Glamping

    Alarm went off at 3:40am and we left for the Indians Nose sunrise hike. I’d left my big bag of clothes in Antigua so had to hike up wearing socks and sandals. The walk was very muddy and slippery but I managed ok in sandals. Up the top the view was cloudy so didn’t get a full view but we could still see very well. It was still worth giving it a try as we saw a little bit of a view. Back in town we went for coffee and breakfast. After walking around we lazed back on the sun deck of the hostel for an hour before the rain came again. I packed my things and walked into town with Jen to have some lunch at a cafe with a lovely view. I then caught a boat over to Santa Cruz. I arrived at the Free Cervesa glamping place where I booked my own tent. I was so exhausted so rested till 5pm when the free beer started. Everyone sat around a big table chatting and had a three course dinner together. It was torrential rain then so I went to my tent fairly early. I realized my exotic experience of glamping wasn’t that great as you still had to get to the toilets all the way in the rain!Leggi altro

    Chichicastenango markets

    I woke up around 6am and saw part of the sunrise over the lake. I caught a 6:45am boat over to Panajachel. I had an hour to kill so went to the restaurant where my shuttle was picking me up and had a coffee with a view of the lake. The shuttle drove me to the Chichicastenango markets. These markets are the biggest in Guatemala and were full of beautiful fabrics. I ended up buying two tops and a rug. I tried some street food of tortillas and fried chicken with salad. I had a few coffee stops before I caught a shuttle bus back to Antigua. I stayed again at Big Foot hostel. I met Sabine for dinner and we ate a yummy chicken curry at the Travel menu place where a band was playing. We went back to the hostel where there was a big beer pong tournament and our G adventures tour guide was taking part. There were loads of people there but I went to bed early after my big day.Leggi altro

    Heading to Mexico City and Zoe!!

    I had my first sleep in for awhile, till 8:30am! I got a takeaway coffee and sat in the main square. I ate a yummy breakfast at Bella Vista of scrambled eggs and fruit while looking at the view of the mountains. I caught a shuttle bus at 11am to Guatemala City airport and flew to Mexico City where I met Zoe!! Yay!
    We got an Uber to near where we were staying but couldn’t get any closer as there was many roads blocked off due to the earthquake. Our driver showed us places where buildings had collapsed. It was a little worrying walking along the streets blocked off and when we turned into our street, we saw the army set up and our hostel looked very shut. We rang the door and after a while we were let in. They had just reopened the hostel after the earthquake and we were the first new people to check in. He said the building we were in was 90 years old and had survived the three major earthquakes since then. The hostel was very old but we had our own room. We headed out nearby and found a Mexican restaurant where I had a really delicious fish taco, chicken taco, corn and salad. We had some beers before heading back to sleep.    Leggi altro

    Exploring Mexico City

    We woke up early and headed out for coffee and pastries. We caught an Uber to the Frida Kahlo Museum. We got an audio guide which explained all about her tough life, suffering from polio and a bus accident leaving her with terrible pain. Her husband cheated on her many times and she painted mainly from her wheelchair. Her paintings were mainly portraits of herself as that’s what see could see. She died quite young and her house was made into a museum. All the walls were painted in bright Mexican colours. After we caught an Uber to the central area with the big square and cathedral. We had lunch at a local style Mexican place where the whole meal cost $6. I had beef tacos which was mainly just beef and tortillas. We then walked to Templo Mayor, ancient ruins from the center of the wold for the Mexica people. I was annoyed as they made us drink all our water and made me take my battery out of my camera so I couldn’t video anything...weird! There was an interesting museum with artifices and offerings that were found. After we stopped for cocktails as it was raining!
    We walked up the the main park, Alamenda Central, where there was a market set up at one end. We walked up to Plaza Garibaldi and had a drink around the square. We then went to the Tequila and Mezcal museum where we had tastings of each. We had dinner in the market next to the square, Mercardo San Camilito. We had a cheese fondue and I had a goat taco. We had heaps of salsa spreads which made Zoe very happy!
    We then got in a dodgy taxi back but realized there was no meter or identity of the driver. We got out and walked a bit before finding an official taxi with a meter and he drove us back home safely!    Leggi altro

    Teotihuacan Ruins and heading to Puebla

    We got coffee and pastries from a shop down the road, packed up and took an Uber to the Terminal North Bus station. We checked in our big bags and got on a bus to the Teotihuacan Ruins. The ruins were very big and the Sun Temple is the third largest pyramid in the world. We climbed up to the top which got quite steep in some parts. At the Moon Temple we could only walk up half way but the views back along the Valley of Death were quite amazing!
    We caught the bus back to Terminal North and caught a different bus to Puebla. The bus went back past the Teotihuacan ruins. We were on it for ages as it was a local bus. When we arrived in Puebla it was raining and we were at a bus stop a long way from the town center. We didn’t know how to get into town and had a bit of trouble getting a taxi, so we ended up on a local collectivo (bus) which was so full and we were standing. We got off near to where we were staying and walked there. The hostel had problems with check in and giving us the right type of room. After complaining for a while we headed into town for dinner. I had yummy beef tacos and Zoe had a massive salad.    Leggi altro

    A day in Puebla

    We had a sleep in, breakfast at the hostel, then a takeaway coffee sitting in the sun at the local park. We had a look at the large Cathedral next to the central square. It was very impressive! After we walked to the Museum Amparo which had a lot of ceramics and paintings. The museum had an amazing rooftop with views around to all the nearby churches. We had a vegetarian buffet lunch with lots of food for Zoe! We had a look in some shops before it started raining really hard, so we stopped for mezcal cocktails. We had a look in a street market, the artist street, the lollies streets and then wandered up to look where all the tunnels were. It was closed but we looked carefully through the windows. The security man kindly invited us in, chained the door behind us, grabbed his baton as he led us into the underground caves. I was slightly terrified as was reading the book Room at the time. He didn’t try to kill us, rather showed us a nice tour of some of the underground cave systems. We left excited to be alive and happy that we saw some of the caves. We then walked into town and had roof top drinks with views of the square. After we found a restaurant for some Mole! I ate enchiladas with chicken and three types of mole sauce.     Puebla to Oaxaca

    We ate breakfast, went for coffee and then wandered up to the market. I had a Cremina roll which was a chicken schnitzel with avocado in a big crunchy roll! Was delicious. We then had a mad rush back to the hostel to get our things and raced to the bus stop. We got on a local bus but it went too slow, so we got off and caught a taxi to the main bus station. We ran and bought a ticket and boarded the bus to Oaxaca with only a few minutes to spare. The bus was super fancy with very comfortable seats! The bus took about 4.5 hours and on arrival we walked 1.5 km to our AirBnB. We checked in and went out for Mezcal on a roof top while hiding out of the rain. We ate a massive serve of nachos with guacamole! We then went to another Mezcal place for more tastings where they had a musician playing. The drinks had a smoky flavour and were very yummy!Leggi altro

    A day in Oaxaca

    We had a sleep in then went for coffee and breakfast at a cafe. We wandered around to the Cathedral, had a look in some shops and walked down to the market to look at all the food. There were many chocolate shops making chocolate from scratch. We looked at the textile museum which had some amazing pieces in there. I then put washing on, had another coffee, checked out the bus station and ate an early dinner at the market. I had lots of meat cooked over coals from the meat section. Not many veggies if you order anything with meat!
    We had some beers back at our apartment and went to the jazz club for mojitos.    Leggi altro

    Widest tree, ruins and a waterfall

    We ate breakfast at home, had an espresso coffee and got on the tour bus for the day. First stop was Tula where we saw the widest tree in the world!! It was a Montezuma Cypress and measured 42m in circumference. It was very impressive. Next stop was a weaving place. We saw how they spin wool, dye fabrics and weave. Zoe brought a beautiful carpet! Next stop was a Mezcal distillery where we saw the entire process for making Mezcal and we sampled quite a lot of flavours. We were given a little cup as a souvenir. We stopped for lunch and Zoe and I had a picnic in the car park. I managed to sit in a puddle. After we went to the Mitla Ruins which had very intact with intricate mosaic stone work on the walls. It was very impressive. Only a part of the ruins have been uncovered so far. Next stop was the Hierve el Agua which was limestone that had created a petrified waterfall and pools to swim in. The surrounding mountains created a stunning backdrop to the pools which were a nice temperature to swim in. Back on the bus I was lucky enough to have coke leaking from above onto my seat so couldn’t sit back the whole two hour trip to Oaxaca. Back home we had some of the Mezcal we bought with the salt which has crushed up worms in it. We went out for dinner and nearby was a performance/parade of some sort where little kids had paper mache hats with fireworks coming out of the top of their heads. All the crowd was looking away so as to not get fire in their eyes! Dinner was more beef tacos with not much flavour. Back at home we enjoyed a hot chocolate from chocolate tablets that we'd bought that day.Leggi altro

    We went out for coffee and tried to get into the palace which was closed for some reason? After we packed all our things and walked to the bus station to buy our tickets to Puerto Escondido. We ate a big breakfast at the markets of chorizo and scrambled eggs with beans. We boarded the bus and after about three hours our bus broke down and we were stuck waiting! Still waiting while writing this. We waited and waited, it started to pour with rain. After over three hours a new bus finally came. It then started to get dark and we were driven madly around the mountains. We finally arrived in Puerto Escondido and walked in the dark to our hostel. We arrived after midnight and everyone was very lovely greeting us up at the bar on the rooftop.Leggi altro

    A day in Puerto Escondido

    We slept in then ate banana bread and drank coffee for breakfast. I was super keen to do the bio luminescence tour to the lagoon but as it was a full moon was advised against it as you wouldn’t see much. So instead Zoe and I walked to the different beaches along the coast. We had lunch at one of restaurants on the water of fish tacos and a big fresh coconut. We walked along to big beach and enjoyed a cocktail. The surf was very rough so no one was swimming. We then walked back to Carrizalillo beach and had a beer before a big wave came and soaked us. Luckily my phone was in my dry bag. We walked back very wet to the hostel and after showers went to watch the sunset with people from the hostel on some rocks. We had a few beers before heading out to dinner where I had fish in a tomato and olive sauce. Back at the hostel we had some drinks on the roof top before going to bed.Leggi altro

    Dolphin Cruise and beach hangs

    We got up early to go on a sunrise cruise to see the dolphins. We went out far into the open water where we saw schools of dolphins swimming past. There was bottlenose and spotted dolphins. We jumped into the water to swim with them but each time they had already swam away. I didn’t realise how fast they were at swimming. We came back about 10am, had a pastry for breakfast, booked flights to Cuba and we checked out of our room. We had some delicious Middle Eastern falafel for lunch and then wandered down to our favourite beach Carrizalillo. We relaxed, swam and had some beers. The weather was beautiful and the temperature in the water was nice and warm. We had dinner at a little taco shop where you got unlimited fillings, was yummy! After we headed back to the hostel for a shower. We had a bit of stress getting to the bus stop on time but made the night bus with three minutes to spare. Zoe and I drank some Mezcal which we had left over and this helped us sleep.Leggi altro

    San Cristobel

    We arrived in San Cristobel and walked to our hostel. It was beautiful and sunny when we arrived. We ate a big breakfast at a cafe in the square and chilled out till 2pm when we could check in. We were terrified as on the bus we’d both been bitten and it felt like bed bugs. We put all the things we had on the bus with us into the laundromat and walked along to see some of the shops in town. Had some wine and stopped for dinner at fancy restaurant to have the Chile en nogada dish for dinner, which was a local delicacy. It was quite nice but the inside was full of sweet fruit. We stopped at the Spanish tapas place for a wine then back at the hostel we listened to a guy singing and playing the guitar, but he wasn’t very good.Leggi altro

    San Cristobel and the poor chickens

    We ate a really yummy breakfast which was included as part of our stay, omelets and pancakes with lots of fruit. We then signed up to a tour and after a quick coffee headed on a bus to two towns just outside San Cristobel, Zinacantán and Chamula which had a high indigenous population and poverty. The main industry seemed to be growing flowers and textiles. At Zinacantán we saw the church which had been damaged by the earthquakes, we walked around town a bit and visited a textile shop. Most of the things didn’t look too great. We tried some of the local drink Poche which tasted just like alcohol. At Chamula we visited the main church where the floor was decorated with pine leaves and there were candles flickering inside glasses or on the floor. The flower decorations were beautiful and there were groups of families sitting, praying, drinking and sacrificing hens to take the disease from the sick away. It was a quite disturbing to see chickens having their necks broken in the church as part of the sacrifice. There was a small market outside which we had a look at before heading back to San Cristobel. We stopped for a coffee and then walked to the main market for lunch. I had some yummy tacos of beef, chicken and pork for only $21 pesos or $1.45 AUD. We walked around the stores and saw lots of tassels and pom-poms. I brought a beautiful ring from a local artist which I just love. We headed back, collected our washing and went out for some more shopping. I brought a top and Zoe bought shoes and then we stopped at the Spanish tapas bar. We had a massive serve of guacamole with chips and olives. Back at the hostel we packed and had free unlimited mojitos!Leggi altro

    Waterfalls and ruins

    3:30am wake up today to check out and get picked up at 4am. We were on a small shuttle bus that wound through the very tight mountains. At 7am we stopped for a buffet breakfast and then kept driving till about 9am when we arrived at the first waterfalls Agua Azul which were super long and very impressive. We walked about 1km up seeing all the different sections and we swam upstream. After we piled back into the bus and drove to the next waterfalls Salto de Agua which was one large fall which you could walk behind. It was very impressive too! We had a coffee before we drove to Palanque ruins where we had two hours to look around. The Mayans were here and it was a very busy city of about 8,000 people at its peak. It’s thought it was designed too closely together with 4 people per square metre. The people all moved away to other cities and this was the downfall. We found the falls that Zoe had heard about but you were no longer allowed to swim there. We checked into our hostel in town, had some chips and beer before heading out to dinner at a seafood restaurant. I had a massive serve of local river fish fillets with a spicy capsicum sauce.     Ruins, jungle and another night bus

    We drank coffee in the garden area before going to the cafe across the road for a big omelette and fruit platter. We checked out our bags and took a collectivo to the ruins. We spent three hours walking around and exploring. In the museum there was a big sarcophagus in which they found the red queen. We walked to the nearby hippie town of El Panchan. It seemed pretty dead there but we stopped for 2 for 1 cocktails and before long two people from our last bus tour joined us for drinks and some dinner. We stayed till about 8pm before heading into town for some shopping at the supermarket, collected our bags and were on the bus at 9:45pm for a 13 hour journey. Zoe and I brought some Kraken Rum for just under $9 which back home would be about $45! Was a very yummy drink for the bus once we finally managed to get some liquid out of the bottle!Leggi altro

    Arriving at Isla Murejes

    Waking up after sleeping on a bus is never great. I managed to get a bit of broken sleep. From the Cancun ADO bus stop we crossed a bridge multiple times trying to find the bus before we hopped into a cab to the port to travel to Isla Mujeres. The boat trip over had a guy playing the saxophone and getting us to do the Mexican wave which was quite fun. On land we caught a cab to our AirBnB which was in a large unfinished hotel complex. While waiting to check in we had a yummy lunch at the Mango Cafe. We stocked up on some drinks and food at the supermarket Chadraui. Once checked in the lady explained that our room had no air con working so we could move into another room. She opened the door to a mansion apartment with massive kitchen, dinning table, couches and TV, huge bedroom with a spa and balcony. Amazing!! After some problems getting the Netflix to work we made some Pina Colada cocktails and watched the sunset from the pool. We had more cocktails and snacks for dinner as the rain set in so we were too tired to head out. We watched the movie Frida laying in bed.Leggi altro

    Riding around Isla Murejes

    We set the alarm early so we could watch the sunrise over the ocean. It was truly beautiful! We had some breakfast before heading into the main part of the island. It was a 4km walk along the roads, beach paths and sand. We made it to Playa North beach and had a swim in the beautiful warm turquoise water. We had breakfast at a beach bar where the views were stunning, but the pancakes weren’t. We found a nice spot on the sand and relaxed in the sunshine. Once it got too hot we headed inland and found some Coco Frios. Delicious! We then checked out a few dive shops and had another drink where all the boats came in. There were many groups of young kids on boats coming in from tours. We then booked into diving for the next day and hired some bikes. We went to the beach for a bit more sun baking. It was much busier than in the morning with lots of little boats competing by blasting their music the loudest. We headed off on our bikes (one of which was terrible) and rode part of the way down the island before stopping for a drink at the Soppy Peso. It seemed good but once inside was full of drunk Americans. We had a terrible cheesy nachos and some beers before escaping on our bikes. We rode to the end point of the island Punta Sur which has a giant gecko and sculpture park that you had to pay to get in. It was all a bit degraded so we didn’t go in and instead rode back to our place. We just missed the sunset but had some beers in the pool and watched the sky change to night. After we got ready and went out to the Mango Cafe for some fish tacos...mmm yum! We watched some episodes of the OC before going to bed.Leggi altro

    We woke up for the sunrise and enjoyed coffee in bed. We ate breakfast on the balcony and then rode to the dive shop. The first stop was the museum / underwater sculpture park. The water was very warm and there was great visibility. We saw some hoops and swam up to the people sculptures. They were slightly freaky but very cool with the different facial expressions. There was also a car and then another large group of people. The dive was very long with a time of 1hour 10mins as we were quite shallow. The next dive was a natural reef where we saw hawksbill turtles and lots of coral. We saw a scorpion fish, lion fish and a lot of coral. We got back about 2pm and had lunch with the Israeli couple we met diving at a vegetarian restaurant. We then headed to the beach and had a relax before the clouds came back over. We had trouble getting Zoe’s ID back at the diving shop before walking home via our favourite supermarket. We had beers and chips, swam in the pool and made some dinner. We then had wine and watched some more of the OCLeggi altro

    We watched the beautiful sunrise from bed whilst enjoying a coffee. We had fruit and yoghurt for breakfast on the balcony while looking for dolphins in the ocean. We hailed a taxi out the front for the short trip to the port. We boarded the boat and the singer kept us entertained for the journey across to the mainland. At the port we did some successful haggling to get a cab to the airport. The costs started at US$50 and we ended paying only US$12.50. We checked in for our flights and Zoe had some trouble as her immigration form was missing so she had to buy a new form. We got our visas to Cuba in the line to check in for the plane, which was very easy and cost about $25 AUD. We flew to Cuba and arrived at Havana airport. We got some CUC money out from the ATM and converted some Mexican pesos into the Cuban Pesos. We caught a taxi to our AirBnB and met the family. After we walked around the town and had dinner at a restaurant in one of the squares. We walked around the old town and two Cuban guys introduced themselves and walked around explaining things as one of them was normally a tour guide. They said they weren’t allowed to be talking to us and could get in trouble from the police for being seen with us. After Zoe and I went to a rooftop bar called Roma which we’d been invited to by people on the street with business cards. There was nice views over the city and we had a bit of a dance with some Cuban people.Leggi altro

    Travelling to Trindad and Emma!

    We had breakfast at the Casa before getting a taxi to the bus station. The bus leaving time was wrong so we had to wait two hours at the bus station. We caught a bus from Havana to Trinidad which took seven hours! So slow and we stopped for nearly a one hour lunch break. We were suppose to meet Emma at 2pm but didn’t arrive to the Casa in Trinidad until 6pm...eek! We met Emma in the AirBnB and had a chat before heading out to dinner at a tapas style restaurant.     Horse riding and the cave in Trinidad

    We had breakfast in the casa with a full spread of coffee, eggs, fruit, juice and bread. The three of us then went on a horse ride from our Casa to the National Park. We stopped on the way to try sugar cane juice and then another stop where we smoked a Cuban Cigar and had coffee. We continued on riding to a beautiful waterfall where we swam in the turquoise water. After a bit of a rest we headed back on our horses, stopping on the way for some pork that had been cooked on the spit. After arriving home we were exhausted and worried about ticks so we carefully checked ourselves. We walked around town seeing all the painted walls, Zoe got some food and we got some drinks at the supermarket. We had a big bottle of Havana Club rum which we made into cocktails with mango, pina colada and lemonade. We realised it was getting to nearly 10pm so headed out and struggled to find a place for dinner. After we headed out for $1CUC mojitos and sat on the steps in the main square with all the tourists. After we walked up to the cave night club on the top of the hill. It was pretty amazing, set inside a cave with flashing lights and lots of water dripping down.     Lazy beach day in Trinidad

    We woke up and breakfast had been made in our kitchen at 8am. We all weren’t feeling super great but ate and then went back to bed. By around 12 we left and headed into town to get a taxi. We caught a taxi out to the beach area where there was good snorkling. We chilled out and I went for a snorkel to see the coral and colourful fish. There was lots of fan coral but the colours were not very bright. After a few hours a storm came over so we got a taxi back to town. We brought some wifi and sat in the ‘wifi park’ where all the people were hanging out getting internet. We brought some popcorn, cookies and water before heading home. After a rest we headed out for dinner to La Redaccion for a delicious burger. Our meals came with a free Cuba Libre so our alcohol free day didn’t eventuate.Leggi altro

    Santa Clara and the worst lunch

    Our collectivo arrived and was a fancy old car. They charged us more than originally agreed on though but with not many other options we got in and travelled to Santa Clara. It took about two hours and they dropped us at the bus station, even though it was agreed that they would drive us to the Casa. Annoyed we got out and found a horse and cart which was pretty cool! We drove a couple of kilometers to our new Casa. This was then under renovations so we headed across the road to their friends house. We organised with them for dinner, breakfast and the collectivo for the next day to Havana. After a little rest we walked into town for lunch, which was the worst meal so far... took over two hours for a piece of tough steak in bread. We walked up to the Che statue, big square and museum. We were trying to work out what happened here and in Cuba for the revolution as with little info and no internet we didn’t really know. The museum explained little and just had some clothing from Che and Fidel. We walked into town and Emma went home unwell so Zoe and I had a coffee. We walked past a train carriage museum and learnt a little about the train derailment of the military equipment and army which we think caused the Bastill government to be overthrown and resulted in the revolution. We walked up to the other Che statue of him holding a baby before walking into town for some beers. The cars and motorbikes constantly driving past were very cool. So many historic cars, horse and carts, bicycles and scooters all used for taxis was very cool to see! We had a big dinner in our Casa of chicken and some soup with veggies! Zoe and I later walked around town to see the bars and we ended up having a drink at a little cocktail bar.
