• Inca Trail Day 3

    May 17 in Peru 🌙 12 °C

On Day 3 we got to sleep in to 5:30 - what a luxury!!

On Day 3 the hike started to get a bit easier for me as we had a lot of downhill and Incan flats and were losing altitude. By the end of the day everyone else was wishing for uphill as the steep rocky downhill was very hard on the muscles and joints. However going downhill meant I could walk and talk at the same time so I was pleased as punch.

Day 3 the foliage started to change as we moved into the cloud forest. Everything was so surprisingly lush and the views continued to be amazing!! I was very excited to go throught 2 tunnels!

Right before our campsite we stopped at some ruins and were greated by a heard of llamas blocking our path. We enjoyed watching them before our guide caught up and scared them into a stampede to get them off the path. I felt like simba when the wildebeest start charging and we had to jump to the side so we weren't trampled. We were assured that they were completely harmless.

We made it to our campsite by lunch which meant we had a bit of free time which felt great since the past 2 days we hiked from sunrise to sunset.

In the late afternoon we went to ruins close to our campsite affectionately called "mini macchu pichu". They were gorgeous!! It started to very lightly rain for the first time on the trip which scared everyone else back to their tent but meant that Noah and I had the ruins to ourselves to explore which was really special!

All in all this was a great day because it was a bit less hard on our tired bodies. We ended the day with our chef presenting us with a cake to congratulate us on completing the hardest part of the journey. We went to bed early in anticipation of our 3am wakeup to make it to the sun gate at machu piccu.
