• Inca Trail Day 2

    May 17 in Peru 🌙 13 °C

Day 2 was definitely the most physically challenging! We had to hike up the two highest peaks on the trail, one of which was called "Dead Women's Pass." Neadless to say that name was not putting a vote of confidence into me to start the day. We were on the trail by around 6:30am ready to start our long approx. 14km Day with more than 1000m altitude gain. Unfortunately we lost one of the Americans to altitude sickness and he decided to turn back early into Day 2. One of our guides had to walk back to the start with him.

While it was physically grueling and particularly hard for me with my asthma, it was extremely rewarding and the views were spectacular. During our walk we got to know our group a bit better. I introduced them to some of the games my sisters and I play when camping including "I'm thinking of a movie" and "silly sally summer" which the brits promptly renamed to "silly sally sausage."

By the time we made it back to camp we ate dinner and then collapsed into bed exhausted but proud of what we accomplished. We were also very grateful for our porters who hiked the same mountain carrying all of stuff - it was humbling seeing them on the mountain. We definitely couldn't have done the hike without them!!
