  • Sunday Funday!!!

    June 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Today was a marvelous day!!! We started our morning pretty early. Got Betsy up and ready for the day then headed down to breakfast at the hotel. We wanted to get to church at the cathedral before the Sunday traffic jam but we were not early enough. Fortunately, a really sweet couple let Betsy, Rob and I take their seats and they were really, really great seats. Very sweet people. Although, I couldn’t understand the service, I was able to use my google translate app to translate as the priest was speaking in Spanish. It was a really good way to follow along. After church, Betsy and rob lot a candle, said a prayer for Betsy and we were out to go to lunch! We went to this cafe right he outside the cathedral and had some yummy food! Rob and Betsy both had a caprese salad and I had spaghetti with prawns, tomatoes and pesto sauce 🤤🤤 very yummy indeed! After lunch, I took Betsy back to the hotel so she can get a good nap. We’ve been traveling a lot these past few days and it’s really important to make sure she’s: A) hydrated and B) well rested. We were all pretty beat since we didn’t get much rest to get over jet lag and slept the whole afternoon away! Around 6:30pm, we woke up and were leaving for dinner and all of sudden there’s pouring rain!!! Although we know in Spain, it could be a complete rainstorm and the sun will be back out in 10 minutes. That was kind of the case here as well. As soon as it stopped raining, we kind of sprinted to the famous Tapas restaurant. As we’re walking, heavy raindrops started to come down. I covered Betsy up with her poncho, Rob put on his rain coat and I did the same thing. We arrive at the tapas restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious (no surprise there) we had Pedro peppers, Patata baravas, grilled prawns, scallops…everything was really good. After dinner, we decided we should get back to the hotel and get some rest tonight. Tomorrow, we’re going to get the off road wheelchair out and work on it to see if it’ll work for when we push Betsy. Goodnight 😴Read more

  • Monday June 5th!!!!

    June 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today was another marvelous day in Santiago de Compostela! The weather was beautiful!! The highest temperature was about 26 degrees Celsius (78 degrees Fahrenheit). Today we wore shorts and sandals! We got Betsy up around 11am, got her ready for the day, had breakfast and were ready to take on Santiago around 1pm. We walked her around visiting some of our favorite shops. We then had lunch at a small cafe. Betsy/Rob had a small salad and I had a Spanish sandwich with Serrano ham and cheese. It was to die for!! After lunch, we put Betsy down for her nap! Around 7:30pm, we went down to our favorite Italian restaurant in Santiago. The restaurant is very close to the hotel so the walk was nice and the weather started to cool down a bit. For dinner, Betsy had pasta with eggplant and cheese, Rob had pasta with prawns and I had a seafood pasta. Ofcourse the meals were amazing following dessert. We kept saying that we were never leaving and decided to live here forever 😂 what made it so lovely was that the restaurant staff remember all of us from our previous trip which made it so special! After dinner, while walking to our hotel, we were greeted by some friends from the shell ceremony that happened in March! Robin and Ernesto stopped us and told us they remember Betsy and we talked for a bit. It’s really nice to run into some friends from home in another country. We then went back to the hotel and went to bed. Betsy’s Camino walk starts soon!! Just a few days left!!! We’re so excited!Read more

We had roast lamb, silver hake, predron peppers and my personal favorite, pulpo!! It was raining like crazy but we sat inside the restaurant and were watching pilgrims go by! • Singing in the rain

    June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

After leaving the albergue in Casa barbadelo, we then started walking to our next destination! It was absolutely beautiful and sunny then it started to pour! Like crazy, we decided to stop at the next albergue and call a taxi to take us back to our hotel and call it a day. Betsy was covered but Rob, Mark and myself although we’re poncho’d up, we were absolutely soaked!! We departed from Mark and Linda and went back to our hotel and Betsy went down for her nap. Around 5:30, we got up and headed back down to 17 pizzeria. The owner, Edwin, was so sweet and accommodating, especially with Betsy. Rob and Betsy both had hamburguesa with jamon and I had a tropical pizza (typical American lol). We had an amazing day and ran into some folks who volunteered to help us push Betsy tomorrow! First day of Let’s Push Betsy was a success! Thank you both Linda Murphy and Mark McCarthy for volunteering to help us today. Looking forward to tomorrow 🥰Read more

The second day on the Camino was amazing!! We started walking to portomarin from Sarria and it was absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, the walk was too much for Rob and Betsy but I had the opportunity to walk with the rest of the team while we met Rob and Betsy in Portomarin. We had Linda, Mark, Amy, Joann, and Clayton join us to push Betsy! The views were fantastic!! We ended the evening with an amazing steak dinner and company. “The Camino provides” ♥️Read more

  • Third day on the camino :)

    June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today was absolutely beautiful and fun!! After waking up and getting ready for our walk, we discovered that it would be entirely too difficult to push Betsy all the way to En el hospital from portomarin (too many hills). We took a taxi to En el hospital and walked to Lugo. The walk was nice, easy and we took our time which is extremely important. We made it in less than an hour, had some lunch then Rob and Betsy went down for their nap. I decided to keep walking (Manysha) for a bit and come back after coming back, I ran into Joann and Clayton!! Then Amy joined us at this albergue in Lugo! We Talked and had some drinks and Ofcourse we invited them to join us for dinner. For dinner we had Fish (hake) and chips with ice cream and wine. We gave Betsy a little white wine and she loved it! She drank her little glass in one sitting 😂😂 Dinner is as definitely one to remember. Joann, Mark, Clayton, Amy and two others, George and Jane joined us. We ended dinner with some karaoke and it was absolutely peaceful and beautiful. Betsy was moving her head and enjoying the music as well. It’s only the third day and we’re all having an amazing time. We really look forward to whats next to come. Fourth day on the Camino? We’re ready 😈👌🏾 thank you everyone for all of your positive comments and supports!! Betsy is feeling all of it!!! 💕Read more

  • Goodnight from Betsy

    June 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Today was pretty tiresome for our girl but boy, did she push through. She was sleeping so soundly as soon as I helped her to bed and couldn’t resist taking a picture. I know she appreciates all of the beautiful support from you guys. Especially her husband. He has worked tremendously hard putting this trip together for her and it’s going better than we thought. They’re both so strong and I really do love them a lot. They have become another family to me and the support is what is keeping us going. What Rob is doing for his wife is incredibly inspiring and hearing from people that we’ve just met, that we are inspiring them (Rob and Betsy both inspire me 💕) means so much to them. It’s keeping them and what we’re doing alive. So from Rob and Betsy, thank you so much and buenas noches ❤️

    June 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Ahhh was yesterday a dream! We started heading to Azura from Melide. Walking through the forest. It was absolutely beautiful. Per usual, we got Betsy up and ready for the day then took a taxi into the forest where we will be walking. It was breathtaking. Betsy held up. Even though it was pretty hot, we’ve been keeping her plenty hydrated and she’s been doing great!! We got our stamps and kept going. We took a short break once we got to Azura and had some lunch, took a taxi to Hotel Azura and decided to finish for the day. We then met up with Mark, Joanne, Clayton, and Amy for some dinner. We some paella and caramel crème cake. There was a restaurant down the street from our hotel which worked out perfectly 👌🏾 it was a great day indeed!!Read more

  • We’re gettin close!!!

    June 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Another amazing day on the Camino!! We were up bright and early this morning!! We had some breakfast then got ready for the day!! Mark met us at the hotel. Mark has been absolutely amazing during this trip. He has this book called “From Sarria to Santiago” which is a guide from Sarria to Santiago. He has been helping us so much with finding the best route(s) everyday that are easy for Betsy and Rob. Please if you ever think about taking this route, his book is available on Amazon! We took a taxi down to the wall of wisdom where we met up with Amy, Joanne and Clayton. It was absolutely mesmerizing. That wall was definitely filed up with wisdom. Also, Amy and Joann were literally matching which we thought was pretty cute. We hydrated up (Betsy especially) and started rolling. This route we walked was beautiful but it was really hot today. We stopped about 1 km and thought it would be best for Rob and Betsy to take a taxi to a nearby restaurant where we would meet for lunch. We all had sandwiches for lunch and there was delicious. They were just ordinary sandwiches lol. Betsy and Rob then took a taxi to their albergue while I (Manysha) walked with Clayton, Joann and Mark. It was so beautiful. I’m very grateful for the opportunity. After meeting up at the albergue, I was told that these two nice women helped Betsy in bed while I was walking. I was very happy and I know she was even happier. Around 7, we met up with the crew and some folks from France 🇫🇷 for dinner at the albergue. We had steak (which was still cooking) with potatoes and veggies. It was delicious. Betsy had “pork cheek” which was also pretty good, followed by chocolate ice cream. Another good day with Camino pilgrims, Camino food and Camino conversations. It was a very good day indeed and we’re looking forward to tomorrow :) 💓 30 km left until we’re in Santiago!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

  • WE MADE IT TO SANTIAGO!!!!

    June 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After walking up, down and all around, we finally made it to Santiago!! Walking into the square was absolutely bittersweet. Our long journey was finished but we made it there safely, beautifully and successfully. Betsy is incredibly strong. She has done the Camino EIGHT times, walking, carrying her own backpack. Even after she was diagnosed, she kept going until she could not walk anymore. What an inspiration. Doing this walk with this family, really changed my life and perspective as a caregiver and as a human. I’m incredibly proud and grateful for the support, emotionally and physically, and the people that we met along the way. It was very difficult but we do not give up!! Let’s push Betsy 2023 was a success!!! Betsy, Robert and I thank each and every one of you for making this experience even more special, memorable and enjoyable. To Mark, Linda, Amy, Clayton, Joanne and others that we met along the way, THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Without you guys, we wouldn’t have made it!! We all were a team and eventually became FAMILY! We are 115 km stronger and better than ever! Congratulations to everyone who has made it!! Ofcourse, we ended the day with dinner with team Betsy and also we had to go to Tuna!! Betsy smiled…which makes all of this worth itRead more
