Arequipa & Colca Canyon

Nach fast vier Wochen Cusco bin ich wieder unterwegs. Ich konnte zwar wegen Gelenkproblemen nicht alle Wanderungen hier machen, die ich mir vorgenommen habe, aber ich hatte trotzdem eine schöne Zeit mit tollen Erlebnissen und neuen Freunden! Die nächsten 2 Wochen geht es strikt entlang des Gringo Trails in Richtung Lima. Mein erster Stopp ist Arequipa, mit seiner wunderschönen Altstadt und umringt von unzähligen Vulkanen. Der prominenteste davon, El Misti, ragt perfekt kegelförmig über der Stadt. Noch nicht ganz wieder erholt lasse ich das Bergsteigen hier sein und gucke mir stattdessen das super restaurierte alte Kloster mitten in der Stadt mit seinen orangen, roten und blauen Gängen an.
Von hier aus besuche ich auch den Colca Canyon (den zweittiefsten Canyon der Welt, der tiefste ist nur wenige km entfernt). Neben der spektakulären Landschaft ist das Highlight des Besuchs die Tierwelt. Auf dem Weg zum Canyon begegnen uns Vicuñas, ein wilder Verwandter der Lamas/Alpacas, und im Canyon selbst können wir jede Menge Kondore bestaunen, die dicht über unseren Köpfen hinweggleiten. Wahnsinn diese Vögel mit bis zu 3 Meter Spannweite so nah zu erleben.

After nearly four weeks in Cusco I am on the road again. Because of some joint problems I couldn’t do all the hikes I wanted in Cusco but I still had a great time here with amazing experiences and new friends. The next two weeks I will spend directly on the Gringo trail on my way to Lima. My first stop is Arequipa with its beautiful colonial buildings framed by countless volcanoes. The most prominent of these is El Misti which is a perfectly cone shaped addition to the skyline. Since I am not 100% recovered yet I leave the mountaineering be for now and instead visit a beautiful monastery. The small houses of the nuns are arranged in streets with orange, red and blue walls.
I also visit the Colca Canyon from here, the Second deepest Canyon in the world (the deepest is only a couple of kilometers further). The landscape is spectacular but the real highlight of the trip are the animals. On our way to the canyon we spot Vicuñas, a wild relative of the Lama/Alpaca, and in the canyon itself dozens of condors spät really close over our heads. Seeing these massive birds with wingspans up to 3m so close is truly beautiful.Read more
