    Medellin ~ Day 1

    July 11, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

    Hola penguins

Today was a PACKED day. We started by eating my favorite item of food we have had thus far. It was an arepa (flattened cornbread tortilla?) sliced in half with scrambled egg stuffed inside. After demolishing breakfast we took the metro to Casa de la Memoria a museum (yes a museum) offering different perspectives on the Columbian drug wars and armed conflicts. We then headed to find a new SIM card for Audrey’s new phone which turned out to be a surprisingly difficult experience. Thankfully the girl helping us was incredibly patient!! With two working phones we set off to see Comuna 13. A neighborhood previously largely affected by drug wars now converted to a lively environment with giant murals, street performers, and flavorful food. Comuna 13 is perched on a hill and has escalators weaving through the neighborhood in order to help assist the climb and navigate the extensive street art. After meandering through the streets we headed down to ride one of the most extensive and impressive cable cars I have ever been on. The cable cars are part of the metro system and when we got on at 4:30 they were clearly being used more as commute transportation, rather than the tourist attraction aud and I were on it for. The cable car had 4 stops and round trip about 30 minutes. Once we took the full trip on the cable car we proceeded to meet up with one of Audrey’s friends, José. We sat down had a few beers and then went to find a discoteca. After walking through STREETS of discoteca’s we ironically found a lively one called Gringo Tuesday’s (it was a Tuesday). Once again we danced our hearts out, had no stollen phones, and called it a night.Read more
