    RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey

    Wisley is the historic home of the Royal Horticultural Society and houses one of the largest plant collections in the world. 

    We follow the recommended trail on the RHS Wisley map, starting at perhaps the most iconic view of Wisley; the old Laboratory building set among a terraced landscape with the striking Jellicoe Canal in front of it.  We then pass by the Conifer Lawn, take the Wisteria Walk, see the Mixed Borders and Cottage Garden and walk up the hill to see the sculpture of a Drinking Horse Head entitled 'Still Water'.  We walk through the Wildlife Garden, with its wicker structures providing a haven for wildlife, and see another sculpture outside the RHS Hilltop building; Hilltop is the new laboratory and the "Home of Gardening Science"; it is the UK's first dedicated horticultural scientific centre of excellence. There is an interactive exhibition here that demonstrates the benefits of gardens for wellbeing; there are also great views from the top.

    We see the fruit tree collection (pleached) and cut across to the Bonsai Walk; from here it is a walk back via the Alpine Meadow and Rock Garden to The Glasshouse.  This amazing building is 12m high and huge; entering it is like walking into a jungle with its tree ferns, tall palms, lush-leaved creepers and dazzling flower displays and there are three climatic zones to explore (tropical, moist temperate and dry temperate). We leave and walk through the Oakwood to reach the Walled Gardens and the Water Lily Pavilion; from here it is along the Equinox Borders to enjoy the Riverside Walk to the Heather Landscape.  Then back through Howards Field and the Pinetum, the oldest tree collection at Wisley; there are some interesting tree sculptures to see here.

    An excellent 3 hour walk with lots of interesting things to see.    Leer más

    RHS Garden Hyde Hall, Essex

    The garden at Hyde Hall was created by Dr. and Mrs. Robinson in 1955; Hyde Hall was formerly a working farm on a hilltop surrounded by arable land and became the property of the RHS in 1993.

    We start our visit at the original Hyde Hall farmhouse, thatched barn and farmhouse garden, and then - using the map supplied - walk behind to the Robinson Garden, an original area of garden created by the Robinsons themselves.  After walking along the Shrub Rose Border, we reach Lower Pond - also an original feature that has been expanded by the RHS.  Then it's the Global Growth Vegetable Garden; created in 2017 outside the original borders, this garden is set out in a circle and split into four quarters to showcase plants of Europe and the Middle East / Asia / North and Central America / South America; at its centre is a 14m wide octagonal glasshouse in which less hardy edibles are grown. We then cross the Hilltop Garden to reach the iconic Dry Garden, one of the most well-known parts of Hyde Hall Gardens.  We walk down the sun facing Clover Hill towards the man-made lake / reservoir and then up through the Winter Garden to the Courtyard Gardens; planted in 2012, they comprise the stylised Modern Country Garden and the relaxed classic Country Garden. 

     It has been another excellent visit to our second RHS garden.    Leer más

    RHS Garden Rosemoor, Devon

    The house at Rosemoor (originally Rowe's Moor) was bequeathed to Lady Anne Berry by her father in 1931, and she created the original garden around the house in 1959; it was noted for rare and unusual plants (and is still very much a "plants woman’s" area).  In 1988, Lady Palmer (as she then was) gave the garden to the RHS along with extra land, which has now been developed into the Formal Gardens area. 

    Starting from Lady Anne's Garden, we wander through the exotic garden and stone garden to view the temperate house; then it is a nice walk through the arboretum, past the bog gardens and across the estate grass to double back past the play area and the stumpery.

    From the newer Formal Garden, close to the entrance, we have a lovely walk through the Queen Mother's Rose Garden (modern roses), Model Garden, Winter Garden to the Cool Garden and Hot Garden (they are arranged symmetrically around the Long Border, a straight walk that bisects the Formal Garden); then we see the Shrub Rose Garden (old traditional roses), Herb Garden and Foliage Garden. 

    Leaving the Formal Garden area, there is a short walk to see the Lake, Orchard, and Fruit and Vegetable Garden.

    There is much variety here; another fine visit to our third of five RHS Gardens in the UK.    Leer más

    RHS Garden Harlow Carr, North Yorkshire

    RHS Garden Harlow Carr is located on the Western edge of Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

    Springs of warm sulphur water were discovered here in the 18th century, and a hotel and bath spa house was finally established in 1840. The Northern Horticultural Society acquired the 26-acre site at Harlow Hill and opened the Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens in 1950. The site was acquired by the RHS in 2014 after the hotel, now the Harrogate Arms, closed in 2014; this is now being redeveloped as a cafe area, whereas the Old Bath House is now an exhibition area.

    The weather was inclement today, but we enjoyed exploring the gardens, seeing the various areas (see photo captions for some of them).    Leer más

    RHS Bridgewater, Worsley, Salford

    Helen and I are on our way to the Lake District for a week and stop off en route to visit RHS Bridgewater, in Salford, Greater Manchester.

    RHS Bridgewater is the RHS's most recent site and only opened in May 2021; it is a modern revival of the historic Worsley Hall New Estate. This former grand estate covered 154 acres and was visited by Queen Victoria. It had many fine gardens but was requisitioned during WWII and used as training grounds. It fell onto disrepair and was eventually demolished, although the Bothy House, chimney, and Garden Cottage survived. The RHS stated their work in 2017, and RHS Bridgewater is still developing and has many projects coming through.

    After entering, we walk towards the Chinese Streamside Garden (being developed in collaboration with the local Chinese community) to its Music Pavilion (the first of four pavilions, apparently). We then walked around Ellesmere Lake and through Upper Middle Wood to the Weston Walled Garden area;  this is one of the largest Victorian walled gardens in the UK and in its original incarnation contained a series of kitchen gardens built to service Worsley New Hall. It is divided into two halves, the Paradise Garden (comprising lily pond, Asian and Mediterranean planting) and the Kitchen Garden (inspired by the local history). We then walk through the Community Grow and the Community Wellbeing Gardens.

    It has been a good visit, but RHS Bridgewater is a work in progress and needs to be revisited again by us in the future.    Leer más
