    Chaotic Phnom Penh

    February 17, 2022 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Phnom Penh is a very strange city, it is very chaotic, both in its architecture and transport. Just walking down the street a few blocks is a tedious adventure, the few road rules they do have seem to be arbitrarily followed, and crossings a junction is basically a game of chicken, tough when the whole city is laid out on a grid. The juxtaposition between rich and more is also more obvious and pronounced than anywhere else we have been so far.
The main attractions in Phnom Penh are the Royal palace, which is currently closed, the national museum, which is busy rearranging their exhibition and the Killing Fields and S21 prison, torture and genocides museum, a must see bit not a very cheerful day. Cambodia has a very recent brutal history with over 2 million killed in the '75 to '78 genocide. It still feels like it hasn't recovered from those atrocities yet.
