Day 4: explore Kuching by Millen

Our first full day exploring Kuching and Borneo started later than we’d hoped, mostly thanks to the surprisingly lively nightlife of a city we thought would be quiet and sleepy, which didn’t exactly help us get much sleep.

With Arushi leading the way, we headed towards Carpenter Street. When we got there, Mum and Dad settled into a café for cold coffees, while Arushi, Eashan and I carried on down the street looking for somewhere to eat. We eventually stopped at a small food market. Even though we weren’t too sure about the hygiene at first, the number of locals eating there convinced us to give it a go.

Mum, Dad and I all ordered a delicious bowl of laksa, much to Dad’s delight. The vegetarians went for a much simpler dish of plain noodles with beans. It might not have looked as exciting, but everyone was happy enough.

After finishing lunch, we wandered over to the Borneo Culture Museum. We were really interested in Borneo’s amazing wildlife, rich history and different cultures. The highlight was seeing the original Deep Skull from Niah Cave, the oldest known modern human remains found in Southeast Asia, dating back around 37,000 years.

Unfortunately, Kuching’s famous afternoon rain soon caught up with us, so we had to take shelter in a nearby shopping mall. While waiting for the rain to stop, we got distracted by all the different shops. By the time we left, the rain had cleared just in time for an incredible sunset over the riverfront promenade. The Darul Hana Bridge gave us the perfect view as the sky turned brilliant shades of orange. As the daylight faded into a cool evening blue, the glowing lanterns and fairy lights guided us back towards Carpenter Street.

We went to a restaurant we passed this morning on Carpenter street, with Arushi confidently leading us. We ordered three cheeseburgers, a margarita pizza and a shiitake mushroom pizza. Although everything tasted good, the portions were surprisingly small, and the pizza was quite different from what we’re used to back home.

After a long day exploring Kuching, we headed back to the hostel, ready for another day of adventures.Læs mere
