We arrived after the long bus trip. They really keep it hidden until after you get into the park. It started with a ticketing area, by the museum--which we didn't get to see. Then there was a long walk down a path through many many souvenir stalls.

But then you see the first pyramid, and it's quite astounding. Especially after seeing it in pictures! We had an amazing guide, who explained the Mayan history and the history of the pyramid. Apparently, there are 2 to 4 old pyramids under the current main one. And under that is a center!

Then we toured the ball court, which was huge. They played with a natural rubber ball that went into a very small hoop along the top side of the court. The most interesting thing was that the winning captain was sacrificed at the end of the match. Apparently, you only send your best to the gods!

There was a big sales pitch before we left, but then it was back to the bus.
