• Sacred Well

    April 16 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

The trip to the cenote was a big surprise. We picked the tour that had Chichen Itza and a buffet lunch. Instead of sandwiches. So glad neither of us likes sandwiches!

Cenotes are sacred wells, and the guide told us that they have found bones from sacrifices at the bottom. Along with cell phones, glasses, jewelry, etc. This one was about 120 feet deep.

There was a process. Step 1: put all belongings, including things that can sink to the bottom in a cenote, in a locker. Step 2: Get a life jacket. Step 3: Rinse off in cold shower. Step 4: Walk down 95 steps to cenote. At the bottom was a very cold sping.

We had 3 choices of how to enter. Jump off a 14 ft ledge, jump off the edge, or climb down a ladder. We opted for the latter, which was a ladder. 😀. I brought a waterproof phone case, so we got some pictures. It felt so good after the heat of Chichen Itza. One of our fellow travelers was in there and seemed really nervous. It turns out she didn't swim! But her husband talked her into getting in with the life jacket. How brave!

I was watching people jump off the 14 ft ledge and realized that I may not always be able to do things like this. So I climbed up the stairs, looked over, thought it was really high, thought that I didn't want to walk back down the stairs, and jumped off! I inhaled a LOT of cenote agua.

After that was the buffet lunch. It was good, but we didn't have that much time. I had a drink they called "Monkey Blood". It was described as something very local. It was good--sweet.

Then it was back on the bus. Heather was waiting for me outside the bus, and I was already on. I told her I was changing in the restroom, but I changed on the bus.

Another 2+ hours back to port. We ended up being so late that they had to hold the ship for us!
