  • Day 33

    Antelope Canyon

    August 3, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Day 32: Bryce or Antelope Canyon? They both are but
    beauties themselves!
For exactly one month I left Düsseldorf for that adventure. A month full of impressions, tons of miles, sleepless nights and experiences.
Today I planned to see Horseshoe Bend and the Antelope Canyon. I definitely found a new favourite state - Arizona! 🌵 The landscape is such amazing. You see red rocks everywhere!
In the morning I had an American Breakfast before I drove to Glen Canyon Dam. This Dam blocks the water of Powell Lake.
After I took some photos I got to the registration point to get a ticket for an Antelope Canyon tour.
Before it started I was going to Horsehoe Bend. There I got a lil bit confused because one phone has shown 11am the other one 12am. So I asked other people for the time. But nobody around me was able to speak english and to understand a simple question like "What time is it?". So asked them using my hands and phones.
The ticket for the tour wasn't that cheap but it was that worth it! The Antelope Canyon is one of the best spots for taking photos.
After I returned to the car I continued to the next canyon - the Grand Canyon! 🏔

And then then I got to know the police 🙈
We used to say that we join friends and to camp on a site of someone else who we asked before.
So I tried this in the Grand Canyon as well. I found my "friends" and asked the ranger. But he told me that he honestly had to forbidden it. One site, one family.
Then I returned to my car which parked on the passenger car park.
Suddenly there was a massive light behind my car. So before I got ticket that I parked there I wanted to talk to the ranger.
I got off my car and directly I heard "Go back in your car sir. Shut the door!". So I did it and a police officer came to me. Before that I didn't know that the police was standing behind me. I told that I had a long drive, all campgrounds are full and I need to rest for a while before I continue the ride because I'm really tired.
The officer told me that I'm allowed to camp in the national forest and that there is a car park but that I had to leave the park.
So I drove all the way back found the national forest sign but no car park entry. Anyway I need to find a car park for overnight parking like the nights before.

  • Day 32

    Bryce Canyon

    August 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Day 31: Wow! The Bryce Canyon is the most amazing and beautiful national park I've seen so far!
At around 2am there was a thunderstorm. Because of that Savannah and Ian continued their ride to California. I didn't want to stay alone and decided to drive to the nearest town to the Bryce Canyon. When I got there I slept for a while and drove into the national park very early to see the sunrise. It was beautiful!
Afterwards I parked my car at the main carpark and... felt asleep again 🙈
When I woke up the carpark was full and people were everywhere. I got ready and hiked the Navajo Loop Trail. I loved it!
After I returned to the car I had a shower which was offered there.
Afterwards I continued to Lake Powell.
So the last driving week has begun. Today in one week I gonna return my car!

  • Day 31

    Zion

    August 1, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Day 30: I drove to St. George to see a beautiful Mormons temple. Then I continued to Zion.
The way to get there was awesome. The Highway had a speed limit of 75 mph (130 kmh). Mostly there is a speed limit of 65 mph. But in America it is necessary otherwise they would kill each other. Americans aren't the best drivers! Additionaly the landscape beside the highway was such amazing. And ja, today I drove across three states. I started in Nevada, passed Arizona and arrived in Utah.
When I reached the Zion and waited for the shuttle bus I got to know Savannah and Ian. They came from Bryce Canyon.
We spent the day together doing a hike and taking a shower at a small creek.
After all we went to a free campsite close to the national park eating some hotdogs and marshmallows on a campfire. Tomorrow we wanna get up early hiking to Angel's Landing. They gonna drive all the way to the west coast tomorrow.

  • Day 30

    Las Vegas

    July 31, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

Day 29: I got to Hoover Dam. A huge dam that connects Nevada and Arizona. So when I walked over the dam I reached my last state - Arizona 🌵🙌 But it was very touristic there, too touristic.
Afterwards I drove to the Red Rock Canyon driving the Scenic Loop Drive.
When I returned to the hostel I had a nap, washed my clothes and went to the city seeing some Casinos and the Bellagio. Honestly I didn't see the fountains show. I wanted to see the midnight show, waited there for 30 minutes but nothing happened.
Las Vegas must be the only city in the USA where you are allowed to drink alcohol outside a bar.

  • Day 29

    Death Valley

    July 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 42 °C

Day 28 (2): Death Valley. O my gosh!
On the way to get there it got hotter and hotter. The highest temperature I read was 123 degrees (~50,5 in Celsius)!!!
On one photo you see the result of beeing 10 minutes outside the car. I drove to Zabriskie Point, Dante's View, Golden Canyon, Artist Drive, Devil's Golf Course
and Badwater (the deepest and hottest point of the northern hemisphere).
In the evening I wanted get to a campground. But before I had to refuel. But my credit card struggled. So I took my last cash to get enough gas to get to Las Vegas. There I recognized that my credit card is blocked. But my depit card still works at ATM machines.
Anyway no campground. I decided to check in at the hostel one day earlier. One night more in the city that never sleeps.

    Historic Route 66 / Barstow

    July 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

Day 28 (1): Today I had a lot of impressions so I split it.
When I woke up I had a phone call with Dan one of my travel buddies in 2015. He's actually also in the USA and gonna fly back one day earlier from LA as well. Maybe he joins me or I join him for a while. Would be great!
My first stop was Barstow. I drove the first part of the historic Route 66 to get there. The landscape beside the road was great!
In Barstow I visit an old railroad depot. Afterwards I went to Galico Ghost Tours an old ghost town.
After all I continued to Death Valley. On my way I saw the tallest thermometer of the world. On the photo the temperature cannot be read but there were 108 degrees (~42 in Celsius) 😰

  • Day 28

    Malibu

    July 29, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Day 27: This was a lazy day. It took 'til 12pm until all of us were awake.
Antonia decided to join the Austrian guys for a few days because their trip is more flexible than mine.
But before we explored Malibu together. The first city on a coast with a blue sky and no clouds. The real beach was/ is extremely small. But the city itself is nice.
I wanted to get closer to Barstow/ Death Valley so I drove a little bit to a campground. There I neither find any place for a tent nor for my car.
So I was looking for I quiet place to park the car and to sleep in it.

  • Day 27

    Santa Barbara

    July 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Day 26: We had a long sleep before we started the day. And the day wasn't that nice.
A lot of clouds and dust has welcome us when we woke up.
We drove to the downtown of Morro Bay where we saw the Morro Rock. But the city wasn't something special to us.
So we continued to Santa Barbara quickly. Honestly all the clouds followed us along the coast.
In Santa Barbara we met two guys from Austria. They both are on a one year roadtrip to southern Argentina.
We joined them and so we camped together near Santa Barbara.

  • Day 26

    Sequoia

    July 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Day 25: We got up very early to get to Sequoia national park. On the way we stopped at "Wiener Schnitzel". But honestly they didn't havea Wiener Schnitzel! Just Burger and things like that like MC Donald's.
Anyway we continued to the national park and reached it at about 1pm.
The trees there were extremely tall and huge. Very impressive. From the top of Moro Rock we had such an amazing view over the national park.
After all we decided to camp outside the park to make the upcoming trip shorter.
But we didn't really found a place to stay. So we drove all the way back to the west cost again. To Morro Bay this time. So it gonna be a short drive to Santa Barbara the next day.
We arrived at around 1am. A long driving day has come to an end.

  • Day 25

    Big Sur II

    July 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Day 24: I had the first night in a tent after days. Not that pleasant but definitely better than a car.
Antonia decided to do a mountain hike. I wanted to explore the costs of Big Sur.
So I drove to Monterey and the cliffs look amazing. We got a step closer to paradise.
Suddenly I was closely to work in my vacation. I went to a restroom and when I came out I've seen the party. One collapsed old woman - a police car, a turntable ladder and a ambulance 🤔
Anyway after I was going to Fisherman's Wharf (of Monterey) I ate a burger and enjoyed the sun.
At the end I drove to Pebble Beach seeing the cost there.
On my way back I stopped at the pull outs of Hwy 1 especially the Bixby Creek Bridge.
After all I planned to have a look at Pfeiffer Beach. Google told me that it is not closed yet. But when I reached the Bixby Creek Bridge it was almost 7pm. So I returned to the campground.
