The Lighthouse

Today was extremely windy and on and off rain. We decided to break our cabin fever with a short trip to the nearby lighthouse. This is also where there are some of the most spectacular vistas in the area. Normally, bright blue and calm, the sea was angry and green today and the wind almost knocked me down while I was taking pictures (literally... Reha had to hold on to me LOL). Mother nature provided some extraordinary camera ops today ... enjoy!Read more

The closest neighboring town is Luz. There is a beautiful beach with a nice promenade to stroll along. We stopped here for our "go to" snack of beer and french fries; enjoyed the gorgeous day and had a nice chat with our waiter and waitress.Read more

Today our adventures took us to two local beach areas. This is the first ... a beautiful beach just 5 minutes drive from where we are staying. Gorgeous rocky coastline ... and a beautiful sunny day.

Tavira, Portugal

Today, we decided to take the 2 1/2 hour drive to the far eastern edge of the Algarve, to a beautiful town called Tavira. It is literally a few short miles to the Spanish border. This is a sleepy, relaxed town where we had the best lunch (cod in a creamy potato sauce). After lunch, we strolled the narrow streets and stopped for a coffee sitting by the river. Heavenly! The storks were nesting as we made the drive down. Pictures are not great, as they were shot from the car but if you look closely, you'll see babies in one of the nests!Read more

Today, we took a nice drive to the neighboring town of Portimao - the Algarve's second largest city. Beautiful beach there. We had a nice snack sitting by the sea with the sun on our faces.

Jet lag day!

Not much happening today...jet lag! Beautiful, sunny day. Had our breakfast on the patio listening to the seagulls down in the swimming pool. Quick trip to the store and a nice, long nap. Isn't life great? The photo was taken 2 years ago. There are wonderful rock formations and grottos where you can take a boat trip within walking distance from our apartment.. On our list of things to do!Read more

We are luck enough to be just a 5 minute walk to one of the most beautiful beaches! Woke to a gorgeous sunrise and good Portugese custard tarts ... great way to start the day!

Finally arrived after 27 hours on the road. The trip was pretty uneventful. Arrived Lisbon around 6:15 am, huge lineup at passport control, but our bags arrived without delay and we caught a cab to the train station without any problem. Caught the train and 3 1/2 hours later, we arrived in Lagos. Literally planes, trains and automobiles! Rental car was waiting at the train station. A real plain jane, but meets our needs. Gorgeous weather awaited us. Sunny, warm and a fabulous sea breeze. The apartment we rented way exceeds expectations. Nothing fancy, but everything we need and very clean. 2 bed 2 bath with large terrace, a sea view (and a washing machine)! Now, were off for a trip to the grocery for supplies then I imagine sitting on the terrace with our feet up and adult beverages in hand. Stay tuned.Read more

Waiting for our train to Lagos...which has been delayed. Our plane out of Newark was also delayed last night due to snow! They had to de-ice the plane before we could take off.

We'll, we're officially on our way! Sitting at the Newark airport having a snack ...4 hour wait time! But its been an exciting start (typical Altug vacation), as Reha unplugged the battery in my car last night (it's located in the trunk) and then shut the trunk with the keys inside! The only other key is the valet key... Which does not open the trunk! Good ol' jaguar... Theft proof. Only problem is we have no idea how we will get it open! Oh well,. We'll have a few months before we need to figure that out.

We'll be landing in Lisbon on the 18th, where we'll catch the train to Lagos in the Algarve. Our plan is a 2 month stay travelling around the country. Stay tuned for upcoming photos!
