AUSSIE ADVENTURE

This started out as a retirement dream.

    Baird Bay - South Australia

    Baird Bay is a small fishing village located 50 kilometres south of Streaky Bay on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.
    It is situated on the east coast of a bay named Baird Bay which opens into the north end of Anxious Bay.

    The locality is named after the nearby bay which was named after James Baird, who settled on the shores of Anxious Bay in 1850 before being speared by local Aboriginals on 2 November 1850.

    The bay was known as Beard's Bay until 5 December 1940 when it was renamed to Baird Bay by proclamation    Lue lisää

    Murphy's Haystacks - South Australia

    Murphy's Haystacks are inselberg (island) rock formations located at Mortana, between Streaky Bay and Port Kenny on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

    They are made of a pink, massive, coarsely, even-grained rock consisting mostly of quartz and orthoclase.
    Their appearance may be due to a combination of erosion by underground rainwater and subsequent weathering after exposure.
    Most of the pillars emerge unbroken from the underlying granite.

    This was definitely an interesting and amazing place to visit and explore! The rocks here are so unique and interesting, and the colours are a treat for the eyes.    Lue lisää

    Mt Wudinna - South Australia

    Mount Wudinna is located near the locality of Wudinna on the Eyre Peninsular in  South Australia.
     
    It is claimed to be the second largest monolith in Australia, Uluru being the largest with Kokerbin Rock being the third largest.

    Pildappa Rock is a unique pink inselberg located 15 kilometres northeast of Minnipa in South Australia, known as South Australia's granite country.

    Formed about 1500 million years ago Pildappa Rock is part of the vast Gawler Craton - a geological shield structure covering central Eyre Peninsula, the Gawler Ranges and large parts of outback South Australia.Lue lisää

    Talia Caves - South Australia

    Talia Caves is a group of caves and other attractions on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

    One of the many fascinating highlights of our trip is the amazing coastlines we find in Australia, they never disappoint!
    The caves are known for their striking limestone and granite formations, that have a stark contrast to each section along the coast.

    Woolshed Cave is part of the Talia Caves and is a large cave carved into a granite cliff by waves.
    It has a honeycombed ceiling, dark crevices, and nearby blowholes.    Lue lisää

    The Tub & Monument Lookout - SA

    The Tub is a large crater in the cliff, with a tunnel connecting it to the sea. It is 10 to 30 meters deep and 50 meters across, with a granite base.
    The cave's original entrance is still covered, and the collapsed ceiling has formed a rough bowl, 60 to 70 feet deep.

    An interesting story lies behind the monument lookout, which offers spectacular views of the coastline.
    The monument was erected to honour Sister D. B. Millard, who drowned on the 14th of June, 1928, when a section of the cliff face collapsed.    Lue lisää

    Whaler's Way - Sleaford - SA

    Whalers Way is located near Port Lincoln in South Australia, it is a stunning coastal drive that offers an opportunity to explore some of the incredible scenery.

    The land is privately owned, and the road is gravel, but in good condition. With rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters from Pelamis Point through Cape Wiles onto Blacks Lookout, this was an unforgettable drone flying experience for Phil.Lue lisää

    Port Lincoln - South Australia

    Port Lincoln is a city on the Eyre Peninsula, in South Australia. It is known for its fishing industry and seafood.
    The Axel Stenross Maritime Museum details historic seafaring, with old vessels and a blacksmith's shop.
    Nearby, mostly surrounded by water, rugged Lincoln National Park is home to rare flora and fauna.
    At the edge of the city, Winter Hill Lookout offers views of Port Lincoln, plus surrounding islands and coves.

    We enjoyed lunch at Del Giorno's Cafe.
    Phil had a seafood platter, and I had a Caesar salad with chicken.
    We went for a walk in the park, and visited the Old Mill Lookout and Winter Hill Lookout before heading back to Coffin Bay.    Lue lisää

    The Emu is Australia's tallest native bird, reaching between 1.6 m and 1.9 m when standing erect, and can weigh up to 32kg.
    The Emu can’t fly, but I'm telling you it can run the pants of a kangaroo.
    Well, he was the model for the fifty cents – oom ba da little da da da (Words and Music by John Williamson 1970).

    Coffin Bay, originally Coffin's Bay, is a town at the southern extremity of the Eyre Peninsula, a wheat-growing area of South Australia.
    The town is situated on the western side of the southern tip of Eyre Peninsula about 46 km from Port Lincoln.
    The population swells during holiday seasons to more than 4,000 people due to its proximity to the Coffin Bay National Park.
    Emus abound throughout the area, and speed restrictions are in place in the National Park Coffin Bay.

    Coffin Bay has some of the best Oysters you will ever eat, and we have been eating them since Darwin!    Lue lisää

    Coffin Bay National Park is a remote escape on the southwestern shores of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.
    The park is known for its remote coastal scenery and pounding surf beaches.
    Many of the park's coastal landscapes are accessible only by four-wheel-drive track, bordering high, windswept cliffs and sand dunes.

    A beautiful national park close to the town.
    This national park is huge!
    We drove for quite a while through it and felt like we only saw a small part of it.
    The sealed roads lead to lovely locations with amazing views, wildlife and fauna, and easy beach access.
    We did not take any four-wheel-drive tracks, as that requires a whole day, but it was still a stunning natural environment.    Lue lisää

    Wilpena Pound - Flinders Ranges

    We are currently in Wilpena Pound Resort caravan park, located in the Flinders Ranges, there is one other small van in here with us.
    Makes me wonder when we are surrounded by signs that read "falling limbs" they have camped us right under a big loose-looking tree?
    Another thing, you cannot drink the water here unless you boil it first, but they do give you free 10lt packs of drinking water.    Lue lisää

    The Flinders Ranges are the largest mountain ranges in South Australia, which starts about 200 km (125 mi) north of Adelaide.
    The ranges stretch for over 430 km (265 mi) from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonna.

    The park com­pris­es approx­i­mate­ly 95,000 hectares.
    It includes the Hey­sen Range, Brachi­na and Bun­yeroo gorges and the vast amphithe­atre of moun­tains that is Ikara Wilpe­na Pound.
    We expe­ri­enced the native wildlife, rich cul­tur­al her­itage, impressive geo­log­i­cal fea­tures, camp­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties and a range of activ­i­ties includ­ing bush­walk­ing, four-wheel dri­ving, bird­watch­ing & pho­tog­ra­phy.    Lue lisää

    The Flinders Ranges Part 2

    Flinders Ranges most well known landmark is Wilpena Pound / Ikara, a formation that creates a natural amphitheatre covering 80 km2 (31 sq mi) and containing the range's highest peak, St Mary Peak (1,171 m (3,842 ft)).
    The ranges include several national parks, the largest being the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, as well as other protected areas.    Lue lisää

    Great Wall of China - Flinders Ranges

    This particular Great Wall of China can be found south of Blinman, in South Australia, as you travel along the Flinders Ranges Way.
    This natural phenomenon is a stone structure at the top of a hill that looks like (you guessed it) The Great Wall of China.
    A dirt road off the main drag takes you closer for photos of this range, which sits just outside the Flinders Ranges National Park.

    Walking tracks head up to the top of the ridge line and can be accessed from the car parking area.    Lue lisää

    Kapunda is a town on the Light River near the Barossa Valley in South Australia.

    Lagoon Bay, is a serene coastal escape on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, where stunning scenery and tranquil waters await.
    It is separated from Pennington Bay by a small strip of land.

    Pennington Bay sits on the southern coastline of Kangaroo Island.
    It is a stunning bay that is famous for its powerful swells that roll in.
    The landscape of Pennington Bay is stunning, with stunning bush land and wildlife.

    Pelicans are large water birds that make up the family Pelecanidae.
    They are characterized by a long beak and a large throat pouch used for catching prey and draining water from the scooped-up contents before swallowing.    Lue lisää

    Hanson Bay Beach - Kangaroo Island

    With it's pristine beach, rugged rocky cliff faces and turquoise water, this beach definitely fell into Phil's must-video category.
    Turquoise water is created as the waves break down the rock into tiny crystals, these crystals will get mixed up into the water.
    When sunlight hits the tiny crystals, it will reflect that beautiful blue colour. Hanson Bay, a small, secluded bay sits along the south coast of Kangaroo Island.
    West River Road is an unsealed road, but like many places we have visited, the harder it is to get to the more beautiful it is.    Lue lisää

    Seal Bay Conservation Park - Kangaroo Is

    Seal Bay Conservation Park is a protected area located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island in the Australian state of South Australia.
    It is home to Australia's third-largest breeding colony of Australian endangered sea lions.
    Seal Bay has been home to an Australian sea lion population for thousands of years.
    Sea lions are part of the pinniped group that also includes seals and walruses, which is why sea lions and seals are often confused for the same species.
     
    As marine mammals, sea lions spend time in the water and on land, and they usually live and hunt in large groups.
    Sea lions are predators, they consume large amounts of fish and help to regulate prey species populations.
    They are also prey, however, and serve as an important food source for large animals like great white sharks, hammerhead sharks, blue sharks, and killer whales.

    This beautiful location has an impressive boardwalk that takes you to a viewing area to observe the many sea lions.
    Although you cannot get too close to the seals, watching them in their natural habitat is amazing.

    The overall experience is calm, and even without a guided tour, there is plenty to enjoy and explore at your own pace.
    The information signs along the way provide interesting facts about the sea lions and their environment, so you will not miss out on learning something new.    Lue lisää

    Admirals Arch - Kangaroo Island

    What an absolute gem of a place, Admirals Arch is one of Kangaroo Island’s most impressive and unusual natural landmarks.
    It took thousands of years of erosion to create this distinctive rock bridge near the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse on the island’s southwest coast.

    The boardwalk leading to the arch is nearly as scenic as the landmark itself.
    The Admirals Arch viewing platform is also an ideal place to observe the New Zealand fur seal colony that has established itself below the landmark.
    These dark brown seals rest and breed on land but find food in the water.
     
    Summer is the primary breeding season, and the rock pools underneath the arch are a popular place for seal pups to play.
    Another unique thing about the arch is the stalactites that hang from the rocky ceiling of this former cave.    Lue lisää

    Remarkable Rock - Kangaroo Island

    Kangaroo Island has so much to offer, and the Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park are an amazing place to visit.
    The Remarkable Rocks are actually just that, it is as if someone purposely dropped them on the edge of a cliff and walked away, as they stand out in their surroundings.
    This is what makes them remarkable.

    The unique rock formations, beautiful scenery, and the fact that you can walk on the rocks themselves make it a must-visit location.
    They are as beautiful in real life as they are in pictures, and much more.    Lue lisää

    Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail

    A great little walking trail with various sculptures among the native fauna; some interesting local pieces, mostly steel art. The trail is 1.5 km, with lots of stairs and nice views from several vantage points.

    Maps along the way were very useful for indicating location, as the trail is not just one circuit but has circuits branching off at different points. Quite a few chairs are available to sit along the way and take in the views.

    This was a good diversion while waiting for the ferry!    Lue lisää

    Victor Harbor - South Australia

    Victor Harbor is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located within the City of Victor Harbor on the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 82 kilometres south of the state capital of Adelaide.

    The town is the largest population centre on the peninsula, with an economy based upon agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
    It is a popular tourist destination, with the area's population greatly expanded during the summer holidays, usually by Adelaide locals looking to escape the summer heat.
     
    The coast stretching for around 50 km from west of Victor Harbor along to Goolwa is often referred to as the South Coast.    Lue lisää

    Granite Island - Victor Harbor

    Granite Island is around 62 acres and is one of the most recognized ecological attractions in Victor Harbor due to its unusual granite formations, crashing white waves, elevated views, flora and fauna, and walking trails that provide outstanding panoramic coastal views.
    We opted for a horse-drawn tram ride over the causeway connecting the mainland at Victor Harbor to Granite Island Recreation Park.

    The historic Victor Harbor Horse-Drawn Tram across the causeway to Granite Island commenced operation in 1894.
    The tramway was closed for a period in 2015 due to safety concerns and a collapsing structure; it was rebuilt and reopened in 2022.

    The island is characterised by huge granite boulders tinged with orange lichen, with the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shores creating a stirring soundtrack to our 2.9-km walk around the island.

    We really enjoyed the coastal scenery and discovered the island’s interesting history along the Kaiki trail.    Lue lisää
