  • Cape Liptrap Lighthouse

    12 Temmuz 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Visited Cape Liptrap Lighthouse on our way back from The Prom. Great hidden spot..hardly anyone when we arrived. A picturesque rugged location is easily accessed by a short walk from the car park.

    Cape Liptrap Lighthouse
stands upon a rocky cliff top, on a solitary part of the South Gippsland coastline, warning ships of the rocks in the treacherous Bass Strait.

Like most lighthouses, it has some interesting history, and the cape provides views of Wilson's Prom in the distance.

    13 Temmuz 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

Very unique beach not for swimming. The rock formations are very distinctive and beautiful. Great walk along the rocks, disappointed we couldn't see the caves due to the tides.

    There are Information panels,
on the walk from the carpark to the beach, they tell a really interesting story about the history of the area (including dinosaur info, and pictures for the enthusiasts).

  • The State Coal Mine

    13 Temmuz 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

A great place to visit. Very educational. Gives great insight into the life of a coal miner. We spent over an hour, looking at places like the steam train, the blacksmith's hut, a museum that showed the lives of the coal miners and their families, and the token hut, which displayed the names and tokens of those coal miners who once worked at the site. It's free to enter and you can go at your own pace. There is also a guided tour into the mines but it is not operational at present, we were lucky enough to be able to see inside one of the tunnels as a guide was kind enough to take a group of us that were there down 100 metres.

The State Coal Mine is a former 20th-century state-owned black coal mine located in Wonthaggi. The mine was operational from 1910 until 1968 and is now a state park and tourist attraction.

  • Bellarine

    14 Temmuz 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Today we are heading to Bellarine where will be staying for the next week. It was an uneventful trip, we were mostly travelling on the highway, but we did get a compliment from someone on the radio about how nice our caravan is. We arrived at the caravan site, while setting up a Superb Fairywren was hopping around the area, unable to get a photo as I didn't have my phone with me. After going for a walk around the park to see where the gym and amenities were, discovered these tent bungalows with different animal statues out front.Okumaya devam et

  • On The Bellarine

    15 Temmuz 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Today wasn't the best day for exploring it was cold and wet, so we went for a drive, what they call On The Bellarine. Visit places like Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Indented Head and Port Arlington. Went for a walk on Port Phillip Pier. Watch a fur seal just lazing around at the boat ramp in Indented Head.

As a society, we are always in a hurry to get somewhere, on our mobile phones, we take the simple things around us for granted. As for me, I see the beauty in watching a magpie or feeding a kookaburra or bees on a flower. People need to stop for a moment and enjoy the beauty that is all around them.

  • Point Lonsdale Pier - Lighthouse

    15 Temmuz 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

First built in 1890, the Point Lonsdale Pier pre-dates its neighbour the lighthouse by a dozen or so years. Popular fishing spot now with Mornington Peninsula in view.

Point Lonsdale Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse built in traditional style. It is also known as the Point Lonsdale Signal Station. The lighthouse is located in the township of Point Lonsdale. The lighthouse guards the eastern end of the Bellarine Peninsula. This channel is notoriously treacherous. It is on the western entrance to Port Phillip Bay.

Disappointed that the lighthouse was closed for no reason given (until further notice), I would have loved to have taken the tour.

It is a place where wind, tides, and waves have shaped the coast over time and created a wide diversity of habitats for animals and plants to live.

As part of the entry fee, you take a bus for a 40-minute Safari tour across the open range, where you can spot rhinos, giraffes, zebras and other animals. The tour bus runs throughout the day and you can go as many times as you like. If you miss anything the first time you can go again.

The day was extremely cold and a little bit drizzly, so the animals were not very active. Animals are just the same as us, when the weather conditions are not the best, fortunately for us, the weather took a turn and the sun came out.

This is our last day in Bellarine before we head to Apollo Bay. The weather was cold and miserable, so we decided to go for a drive to Geelong to see the new Spirit of Tasmania Terminal, it is so much better than the one in Port Melbourne, there is ample parking and it is all under cover. This facility has a coffee shop and lounge, they also cater for people travelling with pets.

After we had a look at the new terminal we went for a drive along the foreshore, we spotted the Cunningham Pier so we thought we would go have a look, as usual the place was closed, we took some photos then went and washed the car, had lunch, got some groceries and went back to the caravan.

It was a steep hike up to the lookout, however, it was worth the effort. The views are breathtaking at the top, and the walking trail through the ferns was simply beautiful and refreshing.

The land is privately owned, but the track to the lookout was kindly donated to the shire by Gladys and Norman Henriksen for all to enjoy this jaw-dropping view.

  • Cape Otway lighthouse

    22 Temmuz 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia and is considered the most significant.

Built in 1848, the lighthouse, known as the ‘Beacon of Hope,’ sits 90 metres above the pristine ocean of Bass Strait. It was decommissioned in January 1994 after being the longest continuous operating light on the Australian mainland.

Hundreds of lives were lost along this shipwreck coast – a sad but fascinating history that led to the building of the Lightstation on the cliffs edge.

Eight ships were wrecked along the coast of Cape Otway. These included Marie (1851), Sacramento (1853), Schomberg (1855), Loch Ard (1878), and Joseph H. Scammell (May 1891), Fiji (September 1891), and the Casino in 1932. The first American vessel sunk during World War II, the SS City of Rayville, was also sunk off the Cape by a German mine in 1940, which sank less than 24 hours after the British Ship S.S. Cambridge off Wilsons Promontory. The Americans built a radar bunker on the cape in 1942, which is now open to the public.
