Southeast Asia

Open-ended trip. Les mer
  • Reisens start
    19. oktober 2022
  • Bangkok

    21. oktober 2022, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

After 24 hours of travel time we arrived in Bangkok. Very tired but too excited to sleep. All checked in now to try and calm down and rest.

  • First full day in Bangkok

    22. oktober 2022, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 90 °F

Went to train and bus stations trying to secure a ride to Chiang Mai. Unfortunately we had to settle for the bus since the train was completely sold out for several days.
Anna was in a lot of pain after the plane ride. Made it a difficult day but was still able to see the Royal Palace complex.
Found a little festival. Watched some kickboxing. Went back to Khao San Road for dinner. Anna and Brian got a Thai massage. Bill, not so much. We were still hungry, so we went out for dinner a second time.

  • Fun Adventure

    23. oktober 2022, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 88 °F

My (Anna) massage helped my pain, so I had a much better day. Went to breakfast and tried a coconut 🥥 expresso drink. Interesting and yummy. The lady was kind and gave me a couple of passion fruit when we were leaving. We went on a boat ride exploring the canal. Went through a couple of locks. Met a family from Germany 🇩🇪, one from Costa Rica 🇨🇷, one from Columbia, and a single guy from China 🇨🇳 who works for Tik Tok. We bought a couple of new food items to try at the floating market."(not really floating)
Explored Wat Arun. The boat ride was a scam. They drop you off at the temple, and you have to pay the entrance fee to get out to the road. Wasn't happy about it, but it was a place I wanted to visit, so it wasn't so bad.
Next, I went to get another massage, this time from Na while Brian and Bill went for a beer. Went back for dinner to the Indian place from the day before since it was yummy and easy to get vegan food.

  • Wat Phrathat & Doi Suithep. Chaing Mai

    24. oktober 2022, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Hiked up this extremely steep mountain to a monastery and temple with beautiful ruin like buildings and water falls. We continued on four miles to the top to another temple. We thought about turning around a few times, but Anna talked us into continuing. Thank you Anna 💘 Very step hard hike. We shared a red taxi truck back to town with two couples from the USA.Les mer

  • Elephant rescue

    25. oktober 2022, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Almost a bucket list item, working with rescued elephants. Elephants are still being used for logging and other industries and not always humanely. That being said, there are many rescues in the area that offer people the opportunity to interact with them. We went to one such place and had an amazing experience. We fed them, walked with them, swam with them, and bathed them. Incredible.Les mer

  • Elephants!

    25. oktober 2022, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

We spent half of the day with five elephants, having fun with these gentle giants. We made yummy soup for lunch and met many nice people. We thought we would be headed home after, but the best day got better. Two young ladies from Israel let us tag along on their trip to a waterfall.

    Incredible.

  • Sticky Waterfall

    25. oktober 2022, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

Two Israeli girls we met at the elephant rescue, Tal, and T-faris, were going to a place they called Sticky Waterfall and were kind enough to let us tag along. We had so much fun climbing up and down these falls in a national park outside Chaing Mai.Les mer

  • HuayXai, Laos

    27. oktober 2022, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Made it to Laos. A bit of a challenge because there were no bus seats available for a couple days. We took a taxi to the border, checked out of Thailand, took a bus across the bridge, and somehow managed to check into Laos. The monetary system (kip) may take a little getting used to with all the zeros. 150000 for a room. 350000 for a boat ride. 45000 for dinner. 250000 for a taxi ride to town.Wow! One needs to have a lot of kip to survive in this country.Les mer

  • Pak Beng, Laos

    27. oktober 2022, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

The slow boat to Luang Prabeng takes two days, so we got to spend the night in a little town called Pak Beng. The boat ride was good enough, but we had about 10 backpacking Brits partying on board. And they got a little loud.Les mer

  • Pick up spot

    28. oktober 2022, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

Stopped to pick up passengers at this remote spot. Some kids climbed on the side of the boat to sell their wares. Bill wanted to buy some, but he took so long to find the right amount of currency that the boat left the shore and the kids had to jump off the side and swim back to shore. And I took so long to get my camera, i didn't get any pictures. The worse part was the kids weren't even able to sell anything 😪Les mer

  • Luang Prabang

    29. oktober 2022, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We arrived in Luang Prabang after two days of travel on the "slow boat." We didn't have hotel reservations, thinking we would find a place when we got here. There was one problem. For some crazy reason, our cell phones would not connect to a network. We have not had any problems before this, so this was a bit of a surprise. We followed a young couple we met on the boat hoping to rent a room at the same location they were staying at, but on the way, we found a place we liked.
Luang prabang is a very neat town with a lot of people traveling through. The next day, we hiked up Phu Si for the view and released some finches for a Bhudist blessing. Later, we went to see the Royal Ballet perform and then shopped at the night market. Tomorrow, we are off to the capital.

  • Vientiane

    30. oktober 2022, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Took the rocket train to Vientiane and then a tuk-tuk to the hotel. Not where we (I) thought the hotel was, but we couldn't just walk downtown. We had to take another tuk-tuk. We shared the ride with a very nice Laotian named Chun who spoke really good English. He was very excited to meet us. We walked around downtown and the promenade. There was a huge market going on, and across the street, there was some kind of carnival. Instead of tossing rings on soda bottles, you tossed rings on live ducks. I don't think that would fly in th USA. Time to move on.Les mer

  • Orchid Trail

    3. november 2022, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

In Lao on the Thakhek Loop. Atempted to go the 40 km detour in the hopes of glimpsing a wild elephant. The road was so rough and rutted and it was very slow going so we ended up turning around and hiking the Orchid Trail. Saw some pretty orchids and the view from the top is gorgeous.Les mer

  • Dragon Cave & Cool Pool

    4. november 2022, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

The dragon cave had no electricity today, but we were able to explore it with head lamps and my phone light. We figured it was much cooler that way. Very beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Come out another opening and hiked up to a great viewpoint.
I don't think they know about switchbacks in Southeast Asia. The trail was steep, and we had to climb up rocks.
Stopped to take dip in the beautiful cool waters of this swimming hole. Very pretty. Brian swam, and Bill waded in up to his waste. It's too cold for me.
Add some dragon fruit for lunch.

  • Kong Lore Cave

    5. november 2022, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Amazing ride 7.5 kilometers through an underground cave/tunnel on a boat. Originally explored because a chopped down tree floated out the down stream side. Then rented some bikes to ride around and check out the local villages on the other side.Les mer

  • Thakhek loop

    7. november 2022, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Finished the Thakhek loop yesterday. Long trip, but well worth it. We drove over 500 kilometers on a Honda Click scooter. Visited at least 6 caves. Two with a boat ride and one we swam inside. Hiked 3 trails. Saw a newborn water Buffalo. Visited countless local villages. Meeting many locals. Got invited by a teacher to visit his school because the kids there never get to talk to a foreigner. Beautiful landscapes, scary trucks and drivers and many potholes and rough roads. But the best part of all was all the kids waving and yelling hello to us as we passed. Plus we didn't crash once.
Today a grueling 7+ hour bus ride

  • Pakse, Laos

    8. november 2022, Laos ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Hired a tuk tuk for the day to drive us to three waterfalls and a coffee plantation. Von the driver was very friendly and helpful. One of the waterfalls required a 3 mile round trip walk along a messed up road through many coffee farms. All were quite beautiful.Les mer
